Details Of The Palin Vetting Process

A senior official close to the John McCain’s vice presidential vetting tells CBS News that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin disclosed both her husband’s DWI arrest and her daughter’s pregnancy during the process. In the second part of the two-stage process, Palin was asked to provide answers to 70 questions. According to the official, Palin disclosed her husband’s arrest on the written form and indicated there was one thing she wanted to discuss orally – her daughter’s situation.

Part one of the vetting included the examination of 21 names and involved a public background search, looking at academic, business, financial and legal records in addition to past controversies. Those who were on this list were not aware of it and the official said Palin was not on it initially but added as the list grew. A written report for each of the 21 was presented to McCain and a senior group of advisers. The report on Palin was 40 pages, single-spaced and included "troopergate" and her fishing fine.

The second stage included six names. Each was asked to answer the 70 questions which included queries about marital infidelity, pornography drug use and prostitution. Contrary to reports, there was not an FBI background check. The six finalists filled out the paperwork for an FBI check but the Justice Department nixed the idea because the people who would have access to the information would include campaign advisers, who are not government employees.

Palin also submitted tax returns for more than seven years and prior public disclosures including articles she had written that aren't in the public domain. She also submitted copies of speeches she has delivered, underwent a credit check and one interview with the chief vetter, A.B. Culvahouse. Her report, along with the other five were presented to campaign manager Rick Davis and to McCain - including the details on her husband's DWI and her daughter's pregnancy.

The official told CBS News that the campaign was aware of the investigation into the firing of a state official and a state trooper but that they were "convinced there was no impropriety" after thoroughly researching it. The source said they "spent a lot of time" looking into it.

The official also noted that the campaign has released documents showing that Palin has been registered as a Republican since 1982 to refute reports that she was a member of the Alaskan Independence Party. As part of the vetting, Palin was asked her to "list all of her political relationships and she did." The source added it was their understanding that she only spoke to the group when they held their convention in Wasilla and she was mayor at the time. The official said it was their understanding that Palin is and was not "active in any other political party."

McSame is going to wish he vetted her.

In a February interview with MTV, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin lavished praise on maverick Republican presidential contender Ron Paul.

She had a few nice things to say about another GOP candidate, Mitt Romney. But Palin made no mention of John McCain.

By the way she showed better judgement than McCain did supporting her. Ron Paul is 10 times the man McShame ever will be.

What really hurts about this selection is that the pundits weren''t expecting it. A woman with middle american problems and beliefs. She attends church! She hunts animals! She fishs! Her husband has a union card. Things couldn''t have been worse for the newsmen and women of our country. They love boring candidates who have long boring resumes. They know how to use the system to get what they want: a democrat in the white house. 90% of the media say they vote democrat. It seems clear: the other 10% are liars.

What does this day about Sen. McCain''s judgment? that he would chose someone with zero foreign policy while we fight two wars. Neither is fit to serve.

QUOTES FROM HER PASTOR:
Jesus called us to die. You''re worried about getting hurt? He''s called us to die. Listen, you know we can''t even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. ... I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say "war mode."

Kalnins has preached that the 9/11 attacks and the invasion of Iraq were part of a "world war" over the Christian faith, one in which Jesus Christ had called upon believers to be willing to sacrifice their lives.

He preaches repeatedly about the "end times" or "last days," an apocalyptic prophesy held by a small but vocal group of Christian leaders. During his appearance with Palin in June, he declared, "I believe Alaska is one of the refuge states in the last days, and hundreds of thousands of people are going to come to the state to seek refuge and the church has to be ready to minister to them."

How do we expect our candidates not to bash each other when that is the majority of what seems to be going on in this blog? This campaign needs to be about issues not candidates'' personal lives. Wasn''t that the mantra during the Clinton years?

Wow! I want to know who is this Biden guy, i am from Louisisana and I have never heard of this blow hard senator. And who is this Hussein Obama guy? He hasnt even finished his FIRST TERM as a part time senator has he? CBS NEWS is very biased and why do you even call your selves a NEWS program.
Funny you have not heard Ms Clinton say anything on this subject and as for trying to get Hillary''s voters, can you not come up with something a little more original like maybe the rest of the women out there are much smarter than you think.

Sarah Palin is an irresponsible parent, and/or an irresponsible governor.
She has too many children not being cared for properly and a state riddle with corruption not being governed properly.

Let%u2019s make her vice president?

I am shocked and appalled by the networks'' treatment of Sarah Palin. I listened to part of Maggie''s interview of Sarah''s friend this morning and couldn''t believe the questions she asked!!! Maggie, you set back the Women''s Movement back fifty years this morning!!! How can you ask if this woman can work and raise her children??? Have you lost your mind??? I thought the point of the 60''s and 70''s Women''s Movement was for women to work AND have a family or choose one or the other without judgement or criticism. I don''t remember any of the media asking Hillary Clinton how she could be a mother and president. And then to ask if she can survive in Washington, since she never talked about leaving Alaska. Do you think it is the frozen tundra? Get with it people this is the 21st century. Women work AND have families. Teenage girls get pregnant (it''s just not on national television) and 22 year old young men drink and drive. Let''s start sticking to the issues and who has the best interest of our country in the heart. I''ll be voting for McCain and Palin...along with everyone else who care''s about our country''s future!!!

Okay - she made it public probably because she knew what would happen with our everlovin'' media. Whatever is with her daughter ain''t nobody''s business. And as far as being able to handle a job and children - how many women in this country does that every single day? I''ve worked 2 jobs, kept the house up, raised the kids and dealt with everything that goes with life. Stop second guessing her and give her a chance. This kind of reporting is beginning to get real stale.

CONDOMS, BOYS & GIRLS. CONDOMS!

Nothing fun, exciting or romantic about being a teenage mother/father. Palin''s daughter will find that out real fast.

Maybe the Secret Service can help babysit if by some hideous circumstance the old man wins.

Palin is "extremely popular" in Alaska. Big whoop. Population of Alaska is almost 700,000.

Outside of Alaska who has heard of Palin?

People are going to look at McCain & say he''s 72. What if he has a heart attack & dies? She''s going to be President! I don''t like that one bit.

You''re going to have to be a huge, hardcore Republican to vote for that ticket come Nov.

The women who supported Hillary are Dems. They don''t give a d a r n
about Palin. It doesn''t carry over.

I see a whole lot of repetition and not a lot of original thought. I don''t care how many kids she has, her daughter''s pregnancy is No One''s business and troopergate-shmoopergate. But I do know that McCain picked Gov. Palin in a sad pathetic attempt to woo the women who were only voting for Hillary Clinton because they wanted a woman in the white house. This much is clear, Gov. Palin does NOT have the experience needed to step up and rule our nation if something happened to John McCain. Both Obama and Biden are fully qualified to lead, not because they are men, but because of the work that they have done in government. I hope that Hillary supporters can see through this ruse and beyond *** (and race) when they vote on Nov. 4.

If they vetted her fully as indicated including troopergate and they are as sure she acted in accordance with the law; why are they seeking to obstruct the investigation in Alaska?
