Schieffer, Greenfield On RNC Activities Being Suspended Tomorrow

(ST. PAUL) Shortly after the RNC briefing announcing the suspension of most activities at the convention tomorrow, I caught up with chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer and senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield for some reaction:

“This is the last thing Republicans expected would be happening on the opening of their convention,” Schieffer said. “But John McCain has really come in and taken charge. He says we’ve got to take off our party hat and put on our American hat, and we’ve got to all be on the same team. John McCain was one of the first people who stepped out and criticized the Bush administration for its slow reaction to Katrina. He’s going to make damn sure that that doesn’t happen this time around.”

“He’s also going to make sure that there’s no pictures going out on television of people dancing around with funny hats on while this tragedy is unfolding down on the coast,” he continued. “I think it speaks well of McCain. He reached out and got a hold of this thing, and made sure they are focused on what they ought to be focusing on, and that is those people down on the coast.”

Greenfield said that the situation gives McCain a chance to underline his message.

“If you go out on the convention floor and look around, the slogan of this convention, and the slogan of McCain’s campaign, is Country First," he noted. "That’s his whole basic argument – I put country first. Surely, by this accident of fate, McCain has a way to demonstrate what he means by postponing all the political activities here and only doing what is legally required."

"Now, had McCain and the Republicans gone on with a convention, and had this hurricane hit with as bad a force as we fear, you’d have had split screen pictures of delegates in funny hats and lots of buttons partying while there was great stress in New Orleans," Greenfield added. "So there was no choice. But as it happens, this does tend to underline the basic theme of the McCain campaign.”

As with his selection of Palin, this seems to be impulsive, and not terribly well thought out, for a few days of photo ops. With Palin, he got a great 24 hour news cycle, but now we''re stuck with her for the rest of the campaign.

Show-boating around the Gulf with cameras in tow can only hinder rescue efforts, and the fact that McCain is planning to give his speech in the hurricane aftermath just underscores how crassly political this is.

If McCain really wanted to help, he''d do what Obama is doing, which is to stay out of their way, and offer his campaign resources to be diverted to efforts to help, out of view of the cameras.

That''s your choice: photo ops, or someone who actually helps.

"Schieffer, Greenfield On RNC in Flux"

Yes, flux as in diarrhea. That is a very good description of the Bushit/Cheny/McClone Axis of Evil.

CBS must be sort of like an idiot savant.

Let us give Grandpa John McCain a chance to say his piece and lead the campaign for relief services and recovery of areas to be affected by Gustav.

At least McCain gets points for learning from his mistakes. Do you remember how he criticized Bush for his slow response to Katrina... And gee, where was Bush when Katrina hit? He was with John McCain celebrating John''s 69th birthday three years ago. Don''t you think McCain could''ve said "Hey Georgie, instead of celebrating my birthday with me, don''t you think you should go help with the hurricane response?"

Posted by mrbrill at 07:35 PM, I agree with your post.

I might ad: photo ops get the Bush/McCain clamoring for action.

Like what happened during Katrina and we still are seeing the photos of McCain and George W. Bush hamming it up and stuffing their faces with cake while others were in funny hats. I don''t blame him for not wanting to get caught with his pants down again.

And what prevented him at that time from suggesting that perhaps their behavior was inappropriate while people all over the city were drowning??

I guess he didn''t realize he would be caught.

The difference between McCain and Obama, here, couldn''t be starker: McCain is going to make it harder to aid the relief effort for a photo-op, whereas Obama is diverting his campaign resources to actually aid in the relief efforts, without getting any photo-op out of the deal.

For me, the guy who sacrifices to help is far more noble than the one who sacrifices the victims for his campaign.

We''ve seen those pictures of the idiot president dancing in New Orleans while the tragedy in Iraq is unfolding.

That''s the GOP way.

Have a great time here in the US of A while over in Iraq, a tragedy is unfolding for many of our brave men and women.

So far, over 4000 troops dead in Bush''s war based on 935 lies.

How much is the McCain campaign paying Bob Shieffer for those obvious plugs he keeps providing today. So far he has claimed that this election will be "about Barack Obama''s inexperience" while touting Gov. Palin''s experience. I think that is clearly a matter of opinion and demonstrates his leanings.

Gustav only serves as a reminder of "You''re doin'' a helluva job here, Brownie." The McCain campaign has tried to use every disaster whether manmande(IRAQ) or natural (Gustav) for cheap political gain. It is disgusting! But, I''m sure we will hear that it was something he learned as a POW.
