McCain Homes Flap Is No Joke

(CBS)
From CBS News' Dean Reynolds:

(CHESAPEAKE, VA.) - Barack Obama was handed a gift-wrapped package from John McCain on Thursday.

Just as the Illinois senator has begun focusing on economic concerns with greater intensity, McCain made a comment that opened wide a gulf between him and the electorate he is wooing.

McCain was asked a simple question during an interview with Politico.com. Nothing tricky about it. No curevball this: How many houses do you and Mrs. McCain have?

"I think," said McCain, "uh, I'll have my staff get to you. I'll try to tell you about that."

Huh? Most Americans would certainly be able to answer that question, especially the ones facing foreclosure or mortgages that are ratcheting up.

McCain's staff did get back as promised, saying the number was "at least four." Again, few Americans are in the four-house category.

Even more embarrassing was the finding of an independent watchdog project, Politifact.com, that McCain and his wife, Cindy, own at least seven. Seven homes. Worth in the neighborhood of $13 million. Scattered across the country.

Now this was too good for Obama to pass up.

"If you don't know how many houses you have then it's not surprising you might think the economy is fundamentally strong," he said.

Within hours his campaign had surrogates fanning out bringing news of McCain's residential bounty to voters in every corner of the nation. A new ad was produced in record time to strike while the iron is hot.

Over a shot of the White House, the ad concluded thusly, "Here's one house Americans can't afford to have John McCain move into."

Slowly, inexorably, cellphones of political reporters began to ring. McCain campaign spokesmen were calling and sounding aggrieved that Obama would be pointing out McCain's miscue. One even said we should expect to here attack ads dealing with Obama's past associations, including his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright and a former urban terrorist-turned-university professor William Ayers. "The gloves," said this operative, "are off."

Thursday evening, in an attempt to drum up an alternative story for reporters, a new McCain ad was churned out alleging that Obama's own million-dollar home in Chicago was purchased with the aide of a shady influence peddler.

But the question must be asked, what did Obama's campaign do that would require a doffing off of the gloves? Did he not simply recycle McCain's own words. And, of course, that is the dilemma for McCain's camp. Just as their man was feeling the wind at his back and basking in some good polls comes word of his seven homes.

At least seven. The McCain campaign cried foul, pointing out that Obama earned $4 million last year, which doesn't exactly make him a man of the people. But by McCain's own definition, it doesn't make Obama rich either.

Remember this from last weekend's conference with Rev. Rick Warren at the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif.?

"Define rich," Warren said to McCain.

"How about $5 million?" McCain responded. The audience laughed. But nobody at the McCain campaign is laughing now.

Four... seven... what does the number of houses a person owns mean among friends? (blatant sarcasm) If you look in retrospect, Obama, if HE were to take the gloves off, could point to plenty in McCain''s past that would be downright embarrassing. So, instead, McCain''s people go for the jugular. Nice politics... your candidate makes a fool out of himself, and then you go after the other candidate for speaking the truth. I think McCain knew all along how many homes he owned... he was simply too embarrassed to admit it!

The "How about $5 million" answer to "Define Rich" was immediately followed by McCain stressing this was a joke and that he was sure people would take that joke and manipulate it as if he was actually serious. McCain''s definition of being "rich" was completely different.

This makes me wonder if this Dean Richards character even watched the Saddleback forums or not. Pretty shoddy "journalism" if you ask me.

The real fools in this case are in the Obama camp for making an issue about real estate. The McCain FAMILY owns a number of properties, including his wife and children. Look it up. While you''re at it, do a little reading about Obama and his shady dealings with Pakastini-American and convicted felon "Tony" Rezko in Chicago.

At the end of the day, it''s been Obama - not McCain - who has tried to sell a cult of personality stressing his salt-of-the-earth "raised on Kansas Values" man of the people. McCain has never denied being rich, whereas Obama plays it off as if the "rich people" are the enemy.

Well Well Well. Seven homes! Why is Obama trailing at http://www.bop-o-rama.com. This on-line real-time open poll suggest something is not going right for Obama. When will the Democrats come out and move McCain''s count over 200,000. So his homes are worth 13,000,000. Obama''s book royalties will probably be worth that and more when his new book is published.

CBS (Communist Broadcasting Syndicate) need I say more? No wonder they love Obamanation so much.

But if CBS gets the communist government they desire, what makes them think they will be the Pravda?

"Sen. McCain himself does not own any of the properties. They''re all owned by Cindy McCain, her dependent children and the trusts and companies they control."

This whole "flap" is a non-issue. The real issue is how this joke of a CBS "journalist" has spun this into something we are supposed to think is relevant. Again, Dean Reynolds has completely omitted McCain''s answer to the "Define Rich" question, thus bastardizing the context to meet his own agenda. You''ve been called out Reynolds ... take this junk to MoveOn.org.

Why do McCain''s campaign advisers let him talk without the proper supervision? Don''t they know he''ll juts embarrass himself more? First the Katie Couric interview, now this.

Man, the Repubs really should have picked Huckabee...he was the only one running who isn''t a complete joke.

(if the GOP does negative on Obama about this) expect McCain being pointed out as being one of the Keating Fab Five in 5,4,3,2,1...

And Dean, you did say "we should expect to here attack ads". Here? (just using your own words against you - love ya, bro).

Did you catch that Cindy has been caught in another lie? First it was lying about a cookie recipe, now she''s been caught in a fib that Mother Theresa "convinced" her to adopt two children from Bangladesh, even though she didn''t actually meet Mother Theresa. Woops! Well at least she''s well matched with her good Republican Hubby who also doesn''t let a little thing like truth or accuracy slow him down when telling a good story.

I''ve actually heard that it may be as many as nine...see what had happened was, was that McCain was about to count the rest of ''em, but he ran out of fingers and had to stop.

Just one more way that he is like George Bush.

For the record, and taken directly from the Saddleback Forum transcripts, when asked to "define rich" McCain immediately replied:

"Some of the richest people I''ve ever known in my life are the most unhappy. I think that rich is -- should be defined by a home, a good job and education, and the ability to hand to our children a more prosperous and safer world than the one that we inherited. I don''t want to take any money from the rich. I want everybody to get rich. I don''t believe in class warfare or redistribution of the wealth."

What does how many homes McCain have to do with the economy or any other issue this nation is facing right now. Just because he married a millionaire and his millionaire wife buys homes doesn''t mean anything right now. Not when you have Obama who received and gave millions to Rezko.

McCain may want to stay far away from the scandal game, because he wouldn''t want Obama to remind voters exactly who Charles Keating is and why he spent five years in jail.

Several news sources have updated the count to TEN McCain homes.

100 million dollars and ten homes fit for a king...MUST BE NICE.

So what. He''s rich and has a number of houses as investments. Obama is rich also. It''s like asking them specifically how many shares of stock they have. Of course, they''re not going to know the exact number. I wonder if Jay Leno could provide the answer to exactly how many cars he has. Idiot media making a big deal out of nothing as usual.

" I''ll see your REZCO and raise you a KEATING 5 " The nerve of the McCain camp saying the gloves are off. They took their gloves off a month ago. The only difference is that Obama didn''t fabricate any lies. He just used the gift that keeps on giving. McCain''s mouth. Has anyone noticed that McCain is not allowed to talk any more. He reads everything. My favorite moment was last week when McCain completely screwed up on something and his people put out a statement. " Senator McCain does not speak for this campaign "

Hey Dezzert_ride. You obviously don''t watch late night TV. Not only can Jay Leno tell you how many cars he has, He can give you the name and model of each one... which is pretty impressive since he owns more than one hundred. Please get your facts straight before sounding like an idiot.

You ask why it matters. It matters politically because it symbolically suggests that McCain is vastly out of touch with the average American family. There''s nothing wrong with being rich. FDR and JFK were wealthy. The difference was that FDR and JFK offered policies to help those in need. McCain''s plan is a continuation of the Bush policies of rewarding the rich in unnecessary tax cuts that do not trickle down to the bottom.

In short, this is a potentially game changing moment in this race.

That isn''t to suggest that

McCain''s overreaction to Obama''s newly tooled economic stump speech portraying McCain as out of touch is telling.

Clearly, the McCain campaign recognizes how powerful this new narrative is. Also, when is the media going to call McCain on his response du jour: Well, McCain was a POW for this POW for that. It''s getting rather tiresome. Frankly, what does McCain being a POW have to do with the economy, health care, stagnant wages and unfair tax policy?

All this really shows is that McCain doesn''t pay attention to his wife''s holdings. Why would he care? They probably trade homes like liberals change life partners. Frankly, this reveals the deep hypocritical nature of politics. Obama shouldn''t be throwing stones about people being out of touch and rich.

GET REAL-WHO CARES ABOUT THEIR HOUSES-I WANT TO KNOW WHO CAN GET ME OIL TO HEAT MY HOME. IF OBAMA IS SO FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS AND POOR AND IS AGAINST DRILLING, HE SHOULD QUIT TRAVELING AROUND THE WORLD AND QUIT USING SO MUCH OIL. I CAN''T MAKE HIDE NOR HAIR OF HIS POLICIES. NOW THAT RUSSIA HAS WITHDRAWN, THE DOLLAR IS UP A LITTLE, HE WILL TRY AND TAKE CREDIT FOR LOWER PRICES. YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE AN IDIOT NOT TO SEE HE USES MORE OIL THAN MOST AMERICANS-AMERICAN WISE UP-

For real, your Republican Conservative Party are the one%u2019s protecting the private multinational oil companies from being coaxed by congress to commence drilling in already approved oil production sites. There are 68 million acres of leased oil and mineral rights approved to drill and retrieve oil from domestic land and, THE OIL COMPANIES AREN%u2019T USING IT!

It is the Republicans leaving YOU out in the cold.

A few months ago there was a flap about McCain owing back property taxes on his beach front condos in San Diego. He apparently forget he owned them and owed something like $8,000 for 4 years in back taxes - $2,000 per year.

Wow - $2,000 a year property taxes on homes he purchased for $4.9 million! I wish I could get that kind of tax break.
