Vaccine Watch: Gardasil Side-Effects?

(AP (file))
Sharyl Attkisson is an investigative correspondent for CBS News.
Yesterday I spoke to the families of young women who believe the Gardasil HPV vaccine may have – or did in fact – cause their child's serious illness. One of the cases involves a now 18-year old young woman named Amanda.

Amanda's parents say she developed a serious reaction to Gardasil after her first dose last summer. It began with soreness where she received the injection. The soreness eventually travelled down her arm, her legs, and led to a horrible autoimmune myofasciitis that is so painful Amanda had to go on morphine for the pain.

She was transformed, through the illness, from a high school varsity sport athlete to a chronically ill person who takes a handful of pills a day just to keep her illness tolerable. When she goes off the medicine, the excruciating pain and other debilitating symptoms return.

One thing that's different about Amanda's case than some of the others is that both of her parents medical doctors who didn't think twice about having their daughter get the shot – but are now second-guessing themselves. They call their daughter's illness after Gardasil "a very sobering experience." Amanda's dad says, "as the father of three girls, I've had to ask myself why I let my eldest one get an unproven vaccine against a few strains of a nonlethal virus that can be dealt with in many more effective ways. It's not like they are at high risk. It was the regrettable acceptance of the vaccine party line that [mis]led me."

Merck, which makes the vaccine, the CDC and the FDA all say it is safe, effective, and important. Speaking of more than 8,000 adverse event reports and more than a dozen deaths, the CDC told CBS News, "we have found no connection between these deaths" and Gardasil. "We still recommend the vaccine and feel it is an important vaccine for the health of women. There are about 20 million people currently infected with HPV. Women have an 80 percent chance of developing HPV by the time they are 50. HPV is most common in people in their late teens and early 20s. Because the vaccine is a preventative and not a cure, it is important that the vaccine be given prior to beginning sexual activity. About 11,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and 3,600 will die. This vaccine prevents four viruses that account for about 70 percent of cervical cancers."

The CDC says it is conducting its own analysis of Adverse Event Reports on Gardasil. Of 7,802 reports after Gardasil vaccination in the U.S. as of April 20, 2008, "Less than 7 percent reported adverse events were considered serious, about half of the average for vaccines overall. Again, a report to (the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) does not mean there is a connection between the vaccine and the report. It means the event took place following vaccination."

The CDC has acknowledged fainting problems after Gardasil vaccination and has recommended that doctors keep vaccinated patients in the office for 15 minutes following the injection. You can see the CDC's HPV VAERS reports here.

The FDA agrees with the CDC and sent CBS News an email with some "important points" including:
  • We are not surprised by the number and type of reported adverse event cases following Gardasil administration since it was approved.
  • We are monitoring the safety of the HPV vaccine very carefully, and the only safety signal identified to date is syncope, or fainting. (A safety signal refers to a concern about an excess of adverse events compared to what would be expected to be associated with a product's use.)
  • Syncope, or fainting, is a common event occurring with needle injections and vaccinations, especially in adolescents. Some vaccinees who fainted were injured when they fell. On October 1, 2007, FDA approved a revised label that added a "Post-marketing Reports" section that included syncope, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Deaths and serious reports (operationally defined as an event that resulted in life-threatening illness, hospitalization, prolongation of hospitalization, persistent or significant disability, and congenital anomaly/birth defect) are followed up by telephone to obtain additional information about the event and the patient's prior medical history.
  • Most adverse events (94 percent) reported to VAERS for Gardasil were not serious and included reports of syncope, pain, headache, nausea and fever.
  • Passive surveillance systems such as VAERS are subject to many limitations. True associations will inevitably be underreported, to an unknown extent. Other adverse events might be expected to occur coincidentally after vaccination. It is problematic that temporal associations will be reported, often with little data to evaluate any causal connection with the vaccine. This inability to obtain precise numerators coupled with inadequate denominator data means that incidence rates cannot be determined. Although the number of doses distributed is available to the FDA we do not know the number of doses actually administered or the demographic distribution of those receiving the vaccine. Reporting of unconfirmed diagnoses is common, and on follow-up initially reported diagnoses are not uncommonly found to be inaccurate. For purposes of evaluating the possible causal relationship between an event and a vaccination, a particularly important limitation is the lack of a direct and unbiased comparison group from which to determine the incidence of the same type of adverse events among people who have not been vaccinated.

  • There is likely still a lot to be learned about the ultimate benefits and risks of this relatively new vaccine. Since the test subjects are young, it will be decades before a large group of them reaches the age at which women typically get cervical cancer. Which means it may be a long time before we know the vaccine's true real world effectiveness when it comes to preventing cervical cancer. In the meantime, public health officials say they will closely monitor any emerging side effect trends. Hopefully, this vaccine will prove to be the lifesaver everyone would like for it to be.

I work in the healthcare field and I have given more than my share of Gardacil shots. The only complaint that I have heard was that I hurts when you first give it. I am also a mother of a 14 year old who is now getting ready to get her 3rd shot. I am not saying that what happen to "Amanda" was not honest and true, but with any vaccine that is given there is a chance for any person to have a side effect. My son had a very bad reaction to the Dtap. Not his first shot, but his second dose of Dtap. So with anything that you are putting into your body you are taking a risk. I just think it is such a blanket statement to say that this is a horrible vaccine. My son was very sick with the Dtap, but that does not make it a horrible vaccine for the next child. It was just not the right one for him. With any thing we put into our bodies (vaccines, food, alcohol, ect.) can cause ill effects. I am sorry for the people who had a bad reaction, but for those who are doing fine lets talk about them as well.

It will not be known for many years if Gardasil has any impact on the rate of cervical cancer. However, given that HPV strains that currently are associated with at least 30% of cervical cancer cases are not even claimed to be prevented by Gardasil, any reduction in frequency of Pap smears means the possibility of missing the development of cervical cancer from those other HPV strains.

Since Gardasil does not reduce any other medical steps to avoid cervical cancer, taking any risk for minimal gain seems to be highly questionable. Why take such a risk just to be a guinea pig for Merck to see if Gardasil actually accomplishes anything 30-40 years from now?

My daughter is 14. She was perfectly healthy & athletic. 16 days after her 2nd shot she had a seizure during a soccer game. She has had four since January. She has had test done and doctors keep telling me there is nothing wrong with her. I dont understand. If it is not the vaccine then how come our story is so much like others? Do healthy girls just start having seizures? I want someone to say, maybe it is the vaccine and then figure out how to fix it. Suing merck is not going to make my daughter seizure free, that is not the answer I want. How come they cant just say "what if"? I just want to worry about the normal teenage stuff, not worry about if I can leave her home alone.

If you research Gardasil, you will find there are many more complaints other than just pain at the injection site. I too work in healthcare and am the mother of a 15 year old who lost the use of her legs for 7 hours after her second dose of Gardasil and for 10 days after her third. After 4 normal MRI''s, 1 normal CT scan, 1 normal spinal tap, two hospitals, many doctors, she has been titled a "medical mystery." I am very open minded that Gardasil may not have caused her paralysis, but, you will never convince me that it didn''t have something to do with it. It was the only thing she did different. Those who have had adverse reactions SHOULD report them. It is the only way we can help prevent these reactions from happening to other children. I pray it does prevent cervical cancer. But, I made the wrong choice by getting my daughter vaccinated. Being in healthcare, I should have known better. This vaccination may not be horrible, but it is too new. WAY TOO NEW. I will pray for "Amanda" and I am one person who says "what if?" God bless all of you who are trying to decide. RESEARCH and then make your decision.

My oldest daughter received the Gardacil vaccine with no problems. My second daughter, age 14 and very healthy, received her second dose on June 11, 2008. She complained of a very sore arm for about five days, and a horrible headache starting about June 22nd. The next day, she vomited twice and her headache did not go away. On June 30th, 19 days after the second dose, she had a horrible seizure. CAT scan, blood work, and spinal tap were all normal. Five days after that, she had another horrible seizure, resulting in a broken nose. She was placed on anti-seizure medication and we are now awaiting an appointment for an EEG with a neurologist. I have read many similar reports since researching this. There has to be a connection. Why won''t the medical community admit there''s enough evidence to at least consider a link to this vaccine and these horrible side effects?

My daughter, Victoria, has been having non-epileptic seizures since March 31, 2008. Doctors seem to believe that my daughter's seizures are stress induced and will not relate them to Gardasil.

Here is some history. I will be as brief as possible. My daughter had her first Gardasil vaccination November 2007. Her second vaccination was in the beginning of February 2008. Immediately after her second vaccination, Victoria experienced severe diarrhea and was nauseous for about eight weeks. On March 31, 2008, she had her first seizure. After several emergency room visits, she was diagnosed with conversion disorder. My daughter has treated with many neurologists, all of whom will not relate my daughter's seizures to Gardasil. Meanwhile, there quite a few hundred people that I have found over the internet through my numerous postings and through Erin Brockovich, and their daughters are all experiencing the same symptoms, which occurred after the Gardasil vaccination. My daughter has had CT scans, MRI's, MRA's, EEG's, blood work and was hospitalized at an epilepsy center for two separate weeks in 2008. Iinitially, she was put on many different seizure medications. All tests have normal results. Although her SED rate seems to be high each time and she did have protein in her urine which doctors do not seem concerned about..

Doctors recommended that my daughter treat with a psychiatrist and I complied. However, the psychiatrist did not believe that my daughter had conversion disorder. My daughter has seen several neurologists, a psychiatrist, psychologist, several neuropsychologists, an immunologist, several infectious disease doctors, and also treated a wellness center.

My daughter currently experiences fhe following: non-epileptic seizures, migraines, fainting, tremors, twitches, numbness, staring episodes, tingling, eye pain, joint pain, neck pain , memory loss, confusion, regression and chronic fatigue . She has not been in school since September 2008 -- she should be a senior in high school. Her teachers helped her to complete her junior year by sending work home. My daughter can never be left home alone. She can't go to school, go out with her friends or work or has little "normalcy" in her life.

I do not know which way to turn for help. We have seen so many doctors and I can't seem to find anyone willing to help my daughter except for one psychologist, who "talks" to her to try to work through her stress. I continue to take my daughter to the psychologist although I do not believe that my daughter's symptoms are stress related. There are so many other girls who have the same symptoms as my daughter and the one thing all the girls seem to have in common is the Gardasil vaccination.

Although, we are on a fixed income, I have expended many thousands of dollars in an effort to seek medical opinions and assistance. Although we do have medical insurance, it is very difficult to find doctors willing to treat my daughter who accept our HMO.

We are in desperate need of medical treatment for my daughter. I have run out of ideas, finances have dwindled and I do not know which direction to turn.

Any thoughts are most appreciated. Thank you.

My daughter is/was an extremely healthy, athletic girl. She has played soccer, competitive cheerleading and is very active physically.
She received her shots last year. She started having "attacks" after the 2nd shot in September where she would feel significant fatigue and lack of energy. Basically slept for a good part of 36 hours during one. During these she states that it feels like her heart is racing and feels like it will pound out of her chest at times. Had to be helped to the nurses office at school more than once because she was dizzy and felt like she was going to pass out. Was taken in to the dr. during one and they ran blood tests, and even took her in for an EKG and chest x-ray after all the blood tests came back negative. NOTHING ever showed up.
She continues to have these attacks 1-2 times a month. Heart rate is elevated, blood pressure is normal but is run down anywhere from the rest of the day to 1-2 days after this. I have talked to the school nurse and two doctors (including a relative) who all say they are just panic attacks or after the EKG doctor says "is most likely a viral syndrome", but they continue to happen.
This is not normal for this girl. She likes to be doing things and when these happen she can't do anything but sleep or lay on the couch.
These did not start until after the 2nd dose and NEVER happened before.
Fortunately these seem mild compared to what some of you have described, but still troublesome and worrysome to us. Any help would be appreciated if any of you know how to deal with symptoms or what is helping your daughters.
Even though told "I don't think its related to the gardisil shots" I'm not totally convinced, especially after reading these comments.
    Thanks
    Matt

I am a frustrated mother of a 17 year old daughter. Madison was a healthy teenager, with the normal occasional cold, seasonal allergies and occasional strep throat. Madison played year around soccer and was a very active teenager with school grades we never had to worry about.
Madison's first Gardasil vaccine was given to her in March of 2007. Fall of 2007, Madison past out in the hallway of the high school, and was luckily found by a teacher. She was blue with no air movement and was later diagnosed
with asthma. She now takes Advair on a daily bases and Albuterol (PRN). As of today, she has had two more of these episodes without ambulance rides due to her inhalers. In March of 2008, she received Garasil #2, as well as Depo-Provera (menses regulation). Migraines begin. The migraines leave her dysfunctional and so fatigue that she misses days of school. She is constantly sick. She catches every virus she comes in contact with. Madison's grades are now becoming a concern. She is home sick with migraines, lack of appetite, lightheadedness, and chronic fatigue so much; she is struggling to get passing grades. She is a junior this year and grades will affect her college?s acceptances.
July 2008, 3rd Gardasil is given. Madison misses at least one to two days of school every week. She quit all extra activities, including her after school job. She was put on Midrin for the migraines, along with Ibuprophen, which didn't seem to help much. Then she was diagnosised with Mononucleosis with very high fevers. She developed fever blisters all over her month and throat. Physicians prescribed Acyclovir for HSV(Herpes Simplex Virus). Madison then started having LUQ abdominal pain, x-rays negative. Chronic fatigue and abdominal pain continues until Feb.2009, Madison starts having syncope (dizziness with passing out). She passes out doing various things, simple as standing up. February 2009, Madison passes out taking a shower, hitting her head. At the physician?s office, she is unresponsive and begins to seize. At the hospital she has a migraine ranking a 10 pain rating, left side paralysis, left side muscle weakness, left side numbness, LUQ pain and nonstop left eye and hand twitching. Testing begins: EKG, MRI, CT, EEG, MRA, ultra sound, lumbar puncture and a variety of blood work. Everything was normal, except her CBC with showed a high count of lymphocytes (viral). Three days of seizure meds, pain meds, and specialist, diagnosed her with "Complicated Migraines with Orthostatic Hypotension". Neurologist put her on Depakote (seizure), and trials of Axert and Maxalt (migraine) medicines. Medicines are not helping. On March 2009, seized and collapsed at school. She stopped breathing as the ambulance was called. At the hospital, symptoms where the same as her month earlier visit. She was released same day with a Toradol injection given for pain.
I'm a healthcare professional and trust the Physicians I work with. After watching Madison suffers with the same kind of symptoms that many teenage girls are suffering with and even dying, I ask why? There has to be a cause. Gardasil may not work alone here. Maybe it?s a combination of medicines taken with Gardasil? Have or do anyone?s daughters take the following medications? Advair, Albuterol, Ibuprophen, Depo-Provera, Acyclovir and pseudoephedrine (allergy meds). Since I found out Gardasil has high levels of aluminum in it. Are these select young women allergic to aluminum? Was any aluminum lab tests done for toxicity?
If you can help with any of my questions. Please contact me by e-mail. Please help!

I have to agree with rdbcoffee; the risks are going to vary from individual to individual. I read all the horror stories but I also know what cervical cancer can do to a woman. I made the decision to have my 13 year old innoculated. After her first shot she went to play in a softball game in 95 degree Texas heat where she's a catcher. She ended up spending 30 minutes at the end of the game throwing up! Next shot we made sure she didn't have anything on and she did better, just had pain at the injection site. Third shot not so good, nausea and headache. If I had another daughter would I do it again? Yes. I feel the benefits outweigh the risks. I know that for the moms going through the "risks" the benefits now mean nothing but we have to show a balance here. Parents need to make the decision that they feel is in the best interests of their child.

My daugher has had the first vaccine, and she had an appointment for the second this week. She told me that a friend of hers was not getting the vaccine because her mother had heard of adverse side effects. Searching for information brought me to this website, and after reading your comments, I cancelled the appointment. Thank you all for sharing. I'm sorry for what some of you are going through. May God bless.

Where can we go to get treatment for our granddaughter. She is showing many signs after having the Gardisal injection. The Drs. have stated she is bi-polar and depression. We are very worried about her and need to get help. Thanks, Grandma Barb

I received my first two gardasil shots without incident, and upon receiving the third felt slightly nauseous and had a slight headache. I got the first two shots at 23 years of age and just finished up the third at 24 years. I noticed that a majority of the girls who were vaccinated that had terrible side effects are in their early-mid teens, and so I wonder if perhaps there is something going on in their bodies at that point (puberty?) that is causing the body to react in such violent ways. It would certainly be interesting to conduct a study to see the side effects and the ages at which such effects occur. After reading about such awful incidents, I am thankful that I was not afflicted in such a way. I hope that some sort of explanation is found for the families who are suffering.

What is the real truth on this? The "Natural Herb" folks want to sell their products, Merck wants to sell it's product, and I don't see a single "clean" fact that tells me anything. Researchers are paid by one interest or another, and this report doesn't say whether it's sources were thoroughly checked for independence.

My daughter is concerned, but her schoolmates are all fundamentalists who would rather see their kids die from the result of "sin" rather than compromise their "family/religious values".

I am very upset. In November of 2007, our local peditrician talked us into getting my daughter the HPV series of shots due to they thought I might have had the HPV back in 2000. So, I thought, heck yes, if this will help her - Why not? It could not hurt her, WRONG! We had nothing but problems since. It started in December 2007, first they said my child was "crazy" since she just all of sudden could not breathe, then she would pass out, had horrible headaches, sick at her sto, mch, nausea, it was so bad that she missed almost the whole month of December from school, was in the hospital in 3 different counties, was medi-vac to a hospital that is 2 hours away from us. They told her there she was crazy, ripped everything out and sent us home. By this time I was desperate to see what in the world was causing all of this. They then said - menigitis, but by the time they got the testing down - there were no traces. So were sent to Forth Worth to Cook's children's Hospital with Dr. Acosta. He ran every test in the world including the spinal lumbar, which showed no traces of the "menigitis", however he believed her about the headaches. So they tried "DHE35" for migraines, by IV, it failed as well. After staying 3 days in the hospital, he decided to put her on Depakote, pain pills (hydrocodone),Cymbalta, Maxalt, and Nexium. It worked until she had sever side effects from the Cymbalta and she was put into a hospital for children with problems. Her dreams had come true, she was a sophmore on Varsity cheerleading, was having a great start and everything went down the drain from grades to friends to concentrating. My daughter always smiles, joked around and now she cries alot! It's awful. Just think - 1 shot did this. I thought they had dones studies and I trusted my dr, needless to say we Dr Acosta in Ft Worth still, don't see the pediatrician any longer. They have finally came to the conclusion that it was the Gardasil that did all of this too her and she is not crazy. We are now on Effexor, Maxalt and will forever be on Depakote. She misses 1 does and she is deathly sick. it's sad and is now almost 17.

I would not recommend this to anyone. Stay away from this shot................................................

My heart goes out to all of the children and their families. I cannot imagine what ya'll are going through. I googled Gardasil to see what some of the side effects are and I am shocked to what I was reading. My 14 yr old had to get her shots last week and now my 11 yr old does too. They asked me if I wanted to give her the Gardasil shot but I declined stating I wanted to do some more research on it first. I thank the Lord I hesitated. With this drug, the "real long term" side effects have not surfaced. There is no history of cancer in our family history, not saying my girls are not at risk but knowing the possible side effects and if my daughters develop any of these horrible side effects that I have read, I could not forgive myself. Thank you for taking the time to write your tragedies. Your stories may have just saved my daughter's life or her lifestyle. I will pray for you all. God Bless.

I am 21 years old and I received the Gardasil Vaccination in 2007 at the age of 19.

Since then, I have had numerous problems, and until reading this article I never thought it was due to the vaccination I received...I feel as though I have had an epiphany.

In 2007 I was diagnosed with Iritis, a recurring eye condition easily controlled with steroid eye drops (Prednisone).
Within 2 weeks of this condition coming and going, I was diagnosed with Neuro Retinitis, a very sever swelling of my optic nerve. Even with more Prednisone, a 5 day IV treatment of cortizone and the best medical attention in Oregon, this condition left me blind in one eye.

Since then I have developed occular migranes, daily occurences where I see flashing lights and temporarily lose vision. I also had an allergic reaction to my contacts and have scarred my cornea.
I also am in the early stages of Glaucoma due to the steroid eye drops I've been put on for all of my eye related illnesses. My Glaucoma has formed in the only eye I can see out of.
Glaucoma is not supposed to form due to prednisone unless it is used for a very long period of time, such as years. I've used it for a total of 2 months in 2 years.

I am going to lose my sight in both eyes and I am not even out of college.

I have been to numerous eye doctors, surgeons and neuro-ophtamologists. I have had MRI's, CT scans, blood work, urine work, everything. I have even had hypnotherapy. I am desperate and starting to wonder if all of this is because of the vaccine I received...

My recommendation? Practice safe-sex precautions and research any medical procedure before having it done, even if it is a simple vaccination. I was young and just trying to keep myself from developing cancer. Cancer nowadays is almost inevitable anyway. I may have caused my own blindness.

I have so much concern for my 11-year-old granddaughter. My daughter and her ex-husband have JOINT custody of their two daughters. The ex-husband allowed HIS mother to take my oldest granddaughter (11 yrs.) to the Health Dept. to get her "booster shots" without the knowledge of my daughter. Among the inoculations that were given to my granddaugter, Emily, was the first Gardasil injection--WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER'S (her mother's) KNOWLEDGE OR PERMISSION! I am so angry and scared about what the results of this could be. My daughter does not seem to be as concerned as I am. But she had not heard or read about the VERY negative side-effects that are possible with this medication. That evening, Emily had diarrhea. I don't know if it had anything to do with the Gardasil injection or not. If I had the right, I would seek legal prosecution against Emily's father and grandmother--but I don't. And, like I said, my daughter doesn't seem to be as concerned as I am. I have since informed her about the possible consequences of the Gardisil injeciton. So I am hoping she will stand up to her ex-husband AND his mother and, hopefully, not allow Emily to have the other 2 remaining injections. In my opinion, safe sex practices (condoms and not jumping into bed with everyone you date) and getting a yearly PAP test and pelvic exam go a long way in preventing what Gardasil claims to prevent!

    Hello Texas_Mom_422

I just realized something. I am a mom of a teenager who had the first shot and had no problems.
But I took depo provera for about 4 years. I recently went through a medical problem where I finally got my thyroid taken care of because it had been overactive for about 10 years. Doc diagnosed me in 1998. in about 2002 I started Depo provera and as I think about it, that is when the headaches started. Horrible headaches, every day around the same time, about 1 pm. light, sound, everything hurt, I would just go to sleep with some asprin. I always thought it was my thyroid, my doctor did too. But it makes me wonder.... The headaches stopped a few years ago, not last Jan when I drank the radioactive water. I bet those headaches were caused by the shot I would get.

It could be the depo provera causing those horrible headaches and maybe hers is worse. It wouldnt hurt to try for 6 months and see.

A note of advice... death is a risk of advair. I do not know about advert. My husband has had asthma his whole life and our Dr put him on advair a few years ago. I read the readers digest in the throne room (perfect place when your bored) and read the fine print in the advair ad. Asthma attacks and death were a high risk. I had him quit that day.

There is bad side affects of just about everything now a days ;/
    -------
Unfortunatly, I also agree with what someone said higher up. Vacines are important. I know that when I get the flu vacine I run the risk of getting the flu or having a horible alleric reaction. Sometimes the risks are not worth it. It is a choice everyone has to make with each product they put into their or their childrens bodies. I tried to quit smoking once with pill on the market. Man, I would take that pill again just for the dreams, but the suicide risk is too high for me who suffers from depression.

Good luck to all, I pray your daughters get better, and that the risks get lower with this shot for our future children.
