McCain Rips Obama’s Energy Policy, Says US Should Not Depend On Foreign Oil

(CBS)

From CBS News’ John Bentley:

HOUSTON -- Making the argument that diversification and conservation are critical national goals, John McCain said high oil prices are not only an economic problem, but a matter of national security as well. “The jobs, family budgets, and futures of the American people should not depend on the whims of foreign powers,” McCain said. “Their opinion of America runs the full spectrum from indifference to hatred. And yet these regimes are today the masters of the oil market.”

McCain repeated his call for lifting the ban on offshore oil exploration, an idea which went over well with the crowd in this Gulf coast state. “I believe it is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions and to put our own reserves to use,” McCain said to a standing ovation from the crowd. “We must deal with the here and now, and assure affordable fuel for America by increasing domestic production.”

Barack Obama compared McCain’s call to lift the moratorium to McCain’s gas tax holiday, which would suspend the federal gas tax for summer. Obama referred to them both as a “gimmick.” “John McCain’s support of the moratorium on offshore drilling during his first presidential campaign was certainly laudable, but his decision to completely change his position and tell a group of Houston oil executives exactly what they wanted to hear today was the same Washington politics that has prevented us from achieving energy independence for decades,” Obama said. “I believe we should put in place a windfall profits tax that will help to ease the burden of higher energy costs on working families, and we should invest in the affordable, renewable sources of energy that Sen. McCain has opposed in the past.”

McCain reminded the crowd of Obama’s support for taxes on oil company profits, which resulted in a chorus of boos from the audience. “He wants a windfall profits tax on oil, to go along with the new taxes he also plans for coal and natural gas,” McCain said about Obama’s energy policy. “If the plan sounds familiar, it's because that was President Jimmy Carter's big idea too – and a lot of good it did us. Now as then, all a windfall profits tax will accomplish is to increase our dependence on foreign oil, and hinder exactly the kind of domestic exploration and production we need. I'm all for recycling -- but it's better applied to paper and plastic than to the failed policies of the 1970's.”

Note: Keep that Liberal, Conservative Bull-Spit to yourself, High Gas Prices, Know No Political Parties & Spares No Political Party from being Gas Robbed & Gas Rape at the Pumps.

"The disappointing part about some of the energy policies being promoted (is) that it calls for more drilling when drilling really is the problem. And all we`ve got to show for pretty aggressive (domestic) drilling for the last 35 years is, again, $4 for a gallon of gas," Manuel said, adding "since the first Arab oil shock in the 1970s, the U.S. has produced almost 90 billion barrels of oil since then, so we`ve tried drilling our way out of the problem and it just hasn`t worked."

Environment Florida spokeswoman Holly Binns told the Media General news group that offshore drilling has NO IMMEDIATE IMPACT ON PRICES.

"It would take anywhere from 7-10 years to bring those resources to shore to have any measurable impact on supply, Binns said, advocating renewable energy sources.

Democrats held their own series of events on Capitol Hill Wednesday to focus attention on global warming and energy independence, but drilling is not on the agenda.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said Tuesday ongoing calls for more drilling "is the Johnny One-Note of the Republican Party."

WASHINGTON A House subcommittee on Wednesday rejected a Republican-led effort to open up more U.S. coastal waters to oil exploration.

Rep. John Peterson, R-Pa., spearheaded the effort.

His proposal would open up U.S. waters between 50 and 200 miles off shore for drilling. The first 50 miles off shore would be left alone.

But the plan failed Wednesday on a 9-6, (Party-Line Vote) in a House appropriations subcommittee, which was considering the proposal as part of an Interior Department spending package.

With record oil prices and gas prices projected to hover around the $4 mark for the rest of the summer, Republicans have ratcheted up their efforts to open up oil exploration along U.S. coastline. But the long-sought change has so far been Unsuccessful.

Most offshore oil production and exploration has been banned since a federal law passed in 1981.

"We are kidding ourselves if we think we can drill our way out of these problems," House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey, D-Wis., said during the bill mark-up session.

McCain: America is Dependent upon Foreign Oil anyway, whether we Drill for Domestic oil or not.

Because it will take 7-10 years for the oil to be processed.

Domestic American oil Drilling will still constitute only (2%) of Oil being produced around the Globe !!

There will be No Immediate Gas price reduction in this time of processing offshore Oil.

In 10 Years the Price of Oil will be 14 $ per Gallon and we`ll be Driving Horse & Buggy, along side the Amish People.

Horse & Buggy Races...Anyone ?

I%u2019m really not completely informed on all the details surrounding the ban on restricting Oil Extraction from environmentally protected areas. But, if a Conservative wants to really, really do something (like invade Iraq) you can bet that nothing good will come of it. The Big Oil Republican Party has demonstrated that they are out for the better interests of the Private Sector and cares nothing about the effect and COSTS to the American People.

The Republican Oil Party needs to answer why they are not producing Oil in already approved and permitted areas. And, they need to stop the Terrorism against the American People in effort to achieve their goals of higher prices with higher profits at the loss to each and every American.

A vote for John McCain is a vote to allow Big Oil to continue to hold the American People hostage.

This is a horrific and ridiculous panacea offered to the voters by McCain. If we lifted the ban today, we all would be 10 years older when the gasoline appeared at the pumps!!

Obviously, this is NOT a solution to anything, except getting McCain elected.

PLEASE do not be fooled by this regressive and "non"-solution, along with all the others, offered up by the Republicans during election season.

There is no shortage of crude oil (in the next few years). There is a shortage of refining capacity %u2013 which has been purposely curtailed for a decade in rare cooperation between oil companies (to bid up profits) and environmentalists (to avoid pollution). This decision paid off in the last few years, as the world demand has used up all the refining capacity.

McCain''s policies are written by oil lobbyists, who lie about the real problem to get long-term oil rights from our national heritage. Drilling will NOT reduce pump prices but it will provide a bankable asset to Big Oil. Get rid of lobbyist influence on oil policy - only then can we finally see positive change.
