Updated: Obama Talks of Family's Military Service

(CBS)

From CBS News’ Maria Gavrilovic:

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Despite not having served in the military himself, Barack Obama used his Memorial Day remarks to speak about his family’s service. “My grandfather marched in Patton’s army, but I cannot know what it is to walk into battle like so many of you,” he told a small group of veterans here. “My grandmother worked on a bomber assembly line, but I cannot know what it is for a family to sacrifice like so many of yours have.”

Obama said he supports the new GI Bill because of his grandfather’s experience in the program after World War II. “We should make sure that today’s veterans get the same benefit that my grandfather got when he came back from World War II,” Obama said. “It was a good investment not only for him, but it was a good investment for the country, built our middle class. So we're going to make sure that that gets passed.”

He said President Bush may veto the bill, but he vowed to try and override it if it comes back to the House and Senate.

Obama also spoke about his uncle, who was part of the American brigade that helped to liberate Auschwitz. He said the family legend is that, upon returning from war, his uncle spent six months in an attic. “Now obviously, something had really affected him deeply, but at that time there just weren’t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain,” Obama said. “That’s why this idea of making sure that every single veteran, when they are discharged, are screened for post-traumatic stress disorder and given the mental health services that they need – that’s why it’s so important.”

Update: Obama's campaign clarified the comments about the candidate's great-uncle liberating Auschwitz, saying Obama was "mistaken," and was referring to Buchenwald, not Auschwitz. “Senator Obama’s family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II – especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald," said spokesman Bill Burton.

Obama, an idealist pacifist and soft socialist, will destroy the American military if elected. He is the greats political threat to America in this nation''s history.

Ok, so the republicans have done better? They have slashed the budgets for those coming home from war, and tell the rest of us that oppose the war that we are unpatriotic? The government has not kept it''s promises to the people that have signed on the dotted line and given their all for this country. I suppose that''s why my father, a vietnam vet told me not to go in, because this country doesn''t love it''s veterans the way everyone says they do. The government plays lip service while taking away the care the vets need. So perhaps Obama is on the right track here.

McCain favors another approach that would give returning vets education payments based on years of service.

A four year enlistment gets you four years of college or tech school. This measure would help re-enlistment based on time in service.

This is the most outrageous lie told by Obama yet. The Allies never even set foot in Poland, where Auschwitz is located: it was liberated by the Soviets!!!

Attention media dupes: Obama is not a messiah. He is an opportunistic liar, crafting fiction to serve the purpose of the day. Next he will be telling us that his uncle was in the attic helping Anne Frank write her diary!

Obama''s uncle spent 6 months in the attic, hiding out. He was obviously a deserter, having been several hundred miles east of the American Army''s deepest penetration. As a deserter, he had to "Lay low" for six months, until the heat died down.

Seriously, It is absolutely mind-boggling that CBS apparently has no one on staff who knows that the US Army never entered Poland during WWII. Incredible!

It is not surprising that Obama doesn''t know basic WWII history. After all he said he had visited 57 states. But it is absolutely mind-boggling that CBS apparently has no one on staff who knows that the US Army never entered Poland during WWII. Incredible!

In 2005 alone, over 6200 vets killed themselves. And Gramps McCain thinks the GI bill is too generous. Despicable.

I don''t care what war the US Army fought in. I''m a service man as we speak, I have seen Vets...and talked to my buddy a Vet who works with Vets and he tells me the sad story of the mistreatments that vets get. I know Obama is not your favorite, but I have faith in him that he will make a difference. I say sorry to McCanin that claims to be the Experts on veterans affairs. Obama ''08.

From poster cgallaway:
"The government plays [sic] lip service while taking away the care the vets need. So perhaps Obama is on the right track here."

Are you kidding me? Obama is the one who is LYING about his uncle''s service by claiming he liberated AUSCHWITZ. Perhaps Obama''s Uncle actually served in the Red Army? That would explain some of his other positions . . .

Maria Gavrilovic, where did you go to school?

Obama''s remarks about his lack of military service, yet appreciation for those who did were--as usual-- refreshingly honest.

On the other side, McCain took his opportunity to spout rancorous nonsense--again, as usual.

We now see a distinct comparison between that class and the crass.

The fact that our media allows Obama to get away with such little lies explains how he is able to get away with the big lie which is his life "story."

realpatriot1, no you are very wrong. Auschwitz, in Poland, was liberated by the Red Army. http://www.ushmm.org/museum/exhibit/focus/auschwitz/ "On January 27, 1945, the Soviet army entered Auschwitz and liberated more than 7,000 remaining prisoners, who were mostly ill and dying." Besides, which "uncle" of Obama''s supposedly helped liberate Auschwitz, his favorite uncle, Uncle Joe?

Does CBS even care that it is reporting these lies as truth? Or has it sunk so low that it will do anything to give its favored candidate all the good press it can, whether or not it is deserved?

trdigmar,

I''ve read that the Russian Army liberated Aushwitz and I''ve also heard the liberating force described as an "Allied" Force.

The clincher to the issue for me is documentary films I''ve seen where Aushwitz survivors talked about being liberated by American troops.

If I''m wrong it won''t be the first time.

I don''t know if his mother was an only child or not and neither do you based upon a single slanted source. It''s quite possible that he''s embellishing to make a point but i take every conspiracy theory proposed by the right with a large grain of salt unless there''s actually multiple sourcing to back it up.

That hasn''t happened yet.

It is unquestionable fact that the Soviets liberated Auschwitz. US forces liberated Buchenwald, Dora-Mittelbau, Flossenb|rg, Dachau, and Mauthausen. But not Auschwitz or any of the other camps in Poland.

Interesting that this isn''t the first time he''s lied about this. Check out his very own website. The second paragraph details another tall tale he told on October 2, 2002, about his grandfather hearing stories from other troops about Auschwitz & Treblinka (both liberated by soviets) and no mention of an uncle. There are more twists & turns in this story than I can keep up with.

CBS, look how easy fact checking is, that took me two minutes to find! You can do it too if you try!

Why does all this matter? He mentioned the "HOLOCAUST" tm, which is all he was trying to do. The newspapers say he was after Jewish "votes." Of course this is a lie. Jews make up a relatively small portion of the electorate and vote Democratic anyway. He never has made such an effort to pursue the Catholic vote, for instance, which makes up 25% of the electorate and can go either way. What he was after was Jewish funding. Jews supply half the funding for the Democratic party, and about a third of the funding for the Republicans. Our whole political dance is based on lie upon lie upon lie.

trdigmar,

I''m apparently wrong about Aushwitz. I did see a documentary
film a few years back that I thought claimed that Auscwitz survivors were liberated by Americans but maybe I misunderstood and it was about another Camp. I apologize for shooting my mouth off on that point without researching it.

However, you aren''t researching your accusations about his grandparents.

Obama''s mother was born in 1942 at Ft. Leavenworth while her father was serving in the Army. Her mother did work on the assemby line during the war, so that part of the story is definitely true.

THE WASHINGTON POST STORY HAS A DIRECT QUOTE FROM OBAMA SAYING HIS UNCLE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST AMERICANS INTO AUSCHWITZ...OBAMA DIDN''T SAY HIS UNCLE HELP LIBERATE THE DEATH CAMP! The media is so freakin'' poor right now. Maria Gavrilovic should look over her notes again. If she wrote down "liberate" then she needs to, and her bosses need to, question her reporting skills. This is how things spin out of control and catches fire in the blogosphere. I''ll take the Washington Post''s reporting over a blowdry any day. Shame on you Maria. More fabrication from a man who will stop at nothing in his effort to pander votes. Hysterically, Bambi has to pull from the ashes stories or %u201Clegends%u201D of those typical old white folks in his family. Why? Could it be that the only other claim to military experience he has is through his cousin Odinga in Kenya who he actively supported and campaigned for. For those of you who aren''t aware, Odinga was the ODM faction''s candidate for change in Kenya that accused the duly elected Kibaki of voter fraud; an act that led to widespread violence in the country resolved by Odinga being named Prime Minister. Hook or crook politics seem to run in the family. What is it Clinton supporters have heard....that there would be rioting and violence in the streets if Obama doesn''t get the nomination. So they wonder why Clinton supporters would be willing to cast their votes for McCain.

Fact: There have been recent calls from the Minister of Justice in Kenya for Odinga to answer allegations regarding impropriety in the purchase and subsequent sale of land on the Kisumu Molasses Plant. More - Odinga was rumoured to have signed a secret memorandum of understanding with the National Muslim Leaders Forum.

Sound familiar - Rezko, Farrahkhan, mission statement of Trinity Church of Christ. YEP THAT''S CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN!! Keep ignoring Obama''s associations and affiliations. What fools people can be to think they have an inkling of the changes Obama has in store for them.
