Desperate to Change the Dynamic of the Race, Clinton Accepts A Debate Offer in Puerto Rico

(CBS)
From CBS News' Fernando Suarez:

PENUELOS, P.R. -- Hillary Clinton said today that she would accept a debate offer from a major Spanish language television channel in Puerto Rico in the coming days because she said, “the issues facing Puerto Rico are serious and deserve a serious debate.”

“I accept that invitation anytime, anywhere," she told a small crowd during a campaign stop in the southwestern part of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is scheduled to vote one week from today, so a debate between Obama and Clinton would be possible. The issue is, Obama has not accepted a single one-on-one debate with Clinton since the Pennsylvania primary back in April. One reason, many believe, is that Obama had a poor debate performance there and was thought to have potentially cost him some votes in that state.

Since that debate Clinton has challenged Obama to debates in North Carolina and Indiana, neither of which he accepted. It is highly unlikely that Obama will accept the Puerto Rico debate either. There is no real reason for Obama to accept a debate at this stage in the campaign. He currently has the majority of pledged delegates and he continues to lead Clinton in the hunt for superdelegates and a poor performance in a debate could create an unnecessary distraction for Obama.

Clinton spoke to a crowd of less than 100 people while standing underneath a tent, as the mid-afternoon sun beamed down on supporters and the press (there was even a fan pointed in her direction. No fans for the crowd or press.) As Clinton spoke ,she proudly told supporters that as a Senator from New York she represents nearly 1 million Puerto Ricans and she feels more like a Senator from Puerto Rico.

“I am very proud as a Senator from New York to represent 1 million Puerto Ricans living in New York. And I feel as though I have been your Senator and now I want to be your president,” Clinton said to applause.

Clinton will continue to campaign in Puerto Rico through Monday and it is likely that she will return sometime next weekend before the island votes on June 1.

Why would Obama want to have another debate with Hillary. She has said enough. Hillary we do not want to hear anymore of your opinions. I am so ashamed of Hillary. For all of her slips of her tongue. And all of her cold-hearted statements.

Debate "WHAT"? There is NO TOPIC left to debate! Is this "debate" with herself? Particularly in light of the so-called ABC "DEBACLE"! The only topic that might be considered would be "how HRC plans to UNIFY the Dem Party"! No further debates will change anything for HRC!

Hillary Clinton said today that she would accept a debate offer from a major Spanish language television channel in Puerto Rico in the coming days because she said, %u201Cthe issues facing Puerto Rico are serious and deserve a serious debate.%u201D

Why yes I''m willing to accept a fair speaking fee of the going rate from one of your large Spanish language television speaking channels and have Bill along. He makes 5 - 10,000,000 dollars a year just in speaking fees. After 35 years experience we''re still talking about the issues facing the Puerto Rican People. We love to talk.

Have I ever told you folks that I''m deeply religious like you and believe that the Lord has sent me on a mission here. It''s called Sainte Hillarya devina moneyta & while we''re are all gathered here we''re going to pass the hat for a generous multa moneyta love offering. Thank you and Gold Bless.

Part of Hillary''s speech:

"Don''t cry for me, Puerto Rico! The truth is, I never left you!"
..."no, really Puerto Rico, my grandaddy was born near a guy born in Puerto Rico...so I''m practically Puerto Rican, too! Arkansas? Who''s from Arkansas? New York...? No, not me, I''m your Puerto Rican home town gal!"

The people of Puerto Rico apparently don%u2019t want to hear what she has to say, they have already heard enough. Only 100 people show up at her rally, compared to thousands that show up to hear Barack Obama. Now she is trying to horn in on his popularity by demanding a debate. Nobody wants to hear what she has to say. They want to hear Barack Obama and his ideas for change and his plans for the future. Barack is too busy reaching out to the multitudes to waste any more time arguing with that old has been.

From Marc Rudin:

The news media who has been in the tank for Obama in probably the most dishonest and biased coverage of an electoral process in history, accuses her of low tactics if she defends herself. Party elders who, if nothing else, have shown since 1996 they haven''t a clue as to how to win a Presidential election, admonish her not to do anything that would damage the Democrats chances in the fall. Howard Dean, more afraid of not losing than making sure the Democrats win by sending out the most electable and qualified candidate, keeps talking about putting an end to race before its over. And Obama seeing that Clinton has one hand tied behind her back, has taken full of advantage, taking his swings when he can, then playing victim if Clinton hits back.

This has been a race where Clinton has been running with 150 lbs on her back and Obama 110. And even with all that she is now in position to win.

Karela33,

I agree with you on that George Stephanopolus questioning. I used to listen to that reporter, well until he made it personal to worship the Clintons. He would be happy to still have his voice pretty soon. I really thought him to be a driven democratic reporter until that "bias" interview.

I have since erased the name: George Stephanopolus out of my mind!!!!

Why, because he''s one of the few reporters that had athe balls to call Obama on his obvious lie?

Why would she go public about "wanting" a debate anywhere and anytime...a debate with.....whom?

The only debate left here is with her own conscience and perhaps taking a nice long vacation and hope that all waters be cooled when she gets back. And perhaps still have a spot in the DNC.

Hillary Clinton''s presence anywhere now just leaves all of us Democrat a sour and distasteful feeling...period.

She has done a great job of dividing the party and would exit leaving the mess for someone else to clean up, just as a normal Clinton would do.

The party needs uniting at this time and getting herself out peacefully is all she could hope for at this point rather being humiliated into or forced out.

We Democrats think she is hoping that she be forced out of the campaigning when all are praising and waiting for her own attempts to leave gracefully...her husband even has made it public, how she should work on exiting but at her own will.

It is a waste of time and everyone''s time to have Barack Obama sit down in a face-to-face debate with Hilary Clinton. For 1. he doesn''t need it
2. it''s degrading for him to sit down with her at this point
3. she needs and should be focusing her time on "a graceful exit" at this point.

Hillary Clinton showed a lack of integrity in the PA debate and made use of the obvious bias that had her former employee George Stephanopolus stacking the questions against Obama. (Clinton got 4 minutes of tough questioning/Obama got more than five times that much.) I can''t think of any reason why he should ever be willing to share a stage with her again.
