Clinton Bumps into John Edwards Before "Colbert Report" Taping

(CBS)

From CBS News' Fernando Suarez:

PHILADELPHIA -- Hillary Clinton bumped into former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards today at the taping of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report." The brief meeting took place backstage where the two spoke in private. This is the first time the two have met since Clinton made a secret visit to Edwards' home in North Carolina back in early February. Edwards has yet to publicly back any candidate, but with the North Carolina primary around the corner, it is a coveted endorsement.

Her rival Barack Obama may have the edge in the endorsement race, however. Two former Edwards supporters and superdelegates, Congressmen Mel Watt, D-N.C., and David Price, D-N.C., endorsed Obama yesterday and are campaigning with him.

Looking to garner support with younger voters, Clinton cut a wedge into her campaign schedule today to appear the "Colbert Report." The show began with host Stephen Colbert complaining about technical difficulties in the studios. Colbert asks if there is anyone who can help fix the problem, and out of nowhere, Clinton emerges onto the set.

"Let me handle this," she says, and goes on to showcase her 'expertise' in dealing with technical problems. She asks the stage manager, "About the screen, are you using a digital or analog production truck?" The entire sketch was parodied on Clinton's campaign claim that she is a problem solver.

Clinton goes on to "fix" the screen and says, "You know what Stephen, your forehead is a little shiny. Make up? Make up? Can we get some translucent powder please?" Colbert responds with amazement. "Wow, Senator Clinton, you're so prepared for every situation. I just don't know how to thank you enough."

"That's OK Stephen, I just love solving problems. Call me anytime."

"Really?" asks Colbert.

"Sure," says Clinton. "Call me at 3am."

The sketch was only four minutes long, but it's clear Clinton hopes to reach the youth audience by appearing on the show. Both Edwards and Obama are also scheduled to appear on the "Colbert Report," which will air tonight.
