Starting Gate: Lucky 21?

(AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)
There have been so many debates, joint appearances and forums in this Democratic primary that it’s hard to set the number exactly but we’ll take Barack Obama’s word for it when he says he’s participated in 20 actual debates thus far. That would make tonight’s one-on-one meeting between Obama and Hillary Clinton the 21st. With “bitter” and “Bosnia” in the background, here are five questions heading into tonight’s debate:

1.) Will Clinton overplay her hand? While not on the ropes, Obama does come into this debate reeling from his self-inflicted comments about small-town Americans, their feelings and their cultural habits. After five days of non-stop discussion about bitterness, there’s been little evidence that the flap has cost him so far. But Clinton’s camp has continued to hammer on it and it will certainly be a chief topic tonight. The risk for Clinton is going too far in both her criticisms of Obama’s perceived elitism and in trying to show her small town bona-fides. Can she avoid the verbal equivalent of downing a shot of Crown Royal?

2.) Obama generally performs much better when he’s countering attacks but can he hold the stage on his own without the concert-like atmospherics that accompany his stump speeches? For all the accolades given to his speeches, Obama has a tendency to be flat at times. As the heavy favorite in the race, he can expect a little more scrutiny on him, especially if Clinton is not constantly on the attack. Can he begin the process of “looking and sounding presidential?”

3.) The focus on religion, guns and cultural issues exposes some of the tricky issues Democrats have largely avoided thus far in the campaign. Namely, how does their courting of the kinds of red state, rural voters in Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky square with the overall electorate? Case in point: Both Democrats speak passionately about the need to heal international relations with a more inclusive foreign policy which does not thrust American values onto other countries while at the same time pledging to alter or withhold trade deals unless those countries behave as the candidates insist. Can they square those kinds of circles?

4.) Previous debates have veered wildly from love-ins to attack fests, which will this be? If we’re not in the midst of the end-game, we’re certainly right at the beginning of the end. That’s a potentially perilous position for Democrats who would like to start seeing the party come together for the fall election. Is it an occasion for recognition of that dynamic or is it desperation time for Clinton, one last chance to find a surprise or way to alter the basic metrics of the race?

5.) Are the superdelegates reaching any sort of critical mass in moving toward Obama? Aside from a loss in Pennsylvania next week, about the only thing that is likely to get Clinton out of the race before at least May 6th would be a mass exodus of those superdelegates to Obama’s camp. Increasingly we’ve heard from even Clinton supporters that the race needs to be ended long before the convention. If tonight’s debate does not do anything to change the dynamics of the race, will the drip, drip, drip of support for Obama start to increase in volume?

Michelle, Unplugged: Michelle Obama yesterday took umbrage at the charges of “elitism” against her husband, telling an audience in Haveford, Pennsylvania not to be “confused” about where the Obamas come from. “Yeah, I went to Princeton and Harvard,” she allowed, “but the lens through which I see the world is the lens I grew up with. I am the product of a middle class upbringing, I grew up on the south side of Chicago, in a working class community. My father was a city worker … There nothing miraculous about how I grew up. I want people to know when they look at me to be clear they can see what an investment in public education can look like." Last night, Michelle Obama appeared on the “Colbert Report,” where she was asked how many silver spoons she was born with. “We had four spoons,” she responded, “and then my father got a raise at the plant, and we had five spoons.”

Pollapalooza: A slew of polls out yesterday indicates that Obama thus far hasn’t suffered any slippage in the wake of his “bitter” comments. A Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg series of polls has him trailing narrowly in Pennsylvania, 41 percent to Clinton’s 46 percent. In North Carolina, he retains a healthy 47 percent to 34 percent lead and in Indiana, he leads 40 percent to 35 percent. A new Philadelphia News/Franklin & Marshal poll shows Clinton up in PA 46 percent to 40 percent. And a Washington Post/ABC poll has him with a 51 percent to 41 percent lead nationally and indicates that Clinton is now seen as less electable in the general election.

Around The Track

  • The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette endorses Obama: “Sen. Obama has captured much of the nation's imagination for a reason. He offers real change, a vision of an America that can move past not only racial tensions but also the political partisanship that has so bedeviled it.”

  • "I can't comment directly as to how I portray myself. … I'm sorry if I basically ducked the question, but I want to say that I think Americans, all Americans, want a respectful campaign." – John McCain, asked by a Villanova student whether he considers himself a “typical white person.”

  • GOP perennial presidential candidate (and 2002 Obama Senate opponent) Alan Keyes announced yesterday he is leaving the Republican Party and is talking to the Constitution Party about running for president under their banner.

  • Bruce Springsteen has endorsed Obama, posting the following message on his Web site: “He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit.”

I wish the Barack and Clinton would get to some real issues.
Lower and middle class families are waiting to hear how they plan on bring the cost of living down so we can afford to be able to do things with our families again, or bring the wages up to the cost of living.
What about health, eye, dental, for the families that can''t afford these things.
What about jobs that pay high enough wages so they are up with the cost of living.
These are the questions I would like for both of them to answer.
I could care less about wither or not Clinton or Barack wear a flag on their lapels or not. That don''t help put families get a good paying job, health care or help bring the cost of living down so families can do things again. Lets get to the real issues.

IllinoisVote: I''m so impressed with your copy and paste skills. Just because you post the same thing on every blog doesn''t make the smears any more true.
Don''t you have a candidate to support somewhere (or are you too embarrassed to admit who it is)?

Agree with posting above about real questions. Don''t like this whole atmosphere of hysteria, worship and mindless following. That is rubber stamping candidates, not informing voters.

Once again Hillary shows what she is all about - NEGATIVITY AND FEAR.
She is losing the race and the only thing she knows is old time politics - drag your opponent down to a level lower than you to make yourself look good, because god knows you do not have the ability to rise above them through your abilities. Hillary has made a mockery of her own campaign, she is making a mockery of the democratic nomination process, and if left unchecked will hand the Republicans 4 more years in the White House. NEWS FLASH - americans, both big city and rural, are bitter - they are sick and tired of the status quo, of having politicans like Hillary say or do anything to get people to vote for them and once elected ignore them for another 3 years until the process starts again. You have misjudged the american people this time Hillary - your negativity and fear mongering is not going to work. Run your negative ads and make your negative speeches, as doing so is wearing out your welcome within the democratic party so that we never have to go through this with you ever again!!!

Wish someone would ask some real Questions of them.

How exactly does obama plan to change the government. Just clean it up? make everyone accountable for what they spend? Or re-write the constitution as he dreamed and talked about in college?

With all their promises what in reality will get worked on and accomplished?

Have they talked to other heads or diplomats of country during their campaigns, why and if they should of over stepped their bounds?

How are they going to prevent Illegal immigrants, What stiff penalties and or deportation of those coming in illegally or helping them come in.?

Can they get the economy stable and the deficit coming down as it was when Bill Clinton was president?

Since the Democrats have taken over the house and Senate, the economy has failed, increased unemployment, How do they explain that? Without blaming the war?

The Country has to have an up in military and financial means to be able to maintain it self, be able to conduct a war, and protect our lands, How do they plan on insuring this?

With world food Crisis, How do they plan to Insure the american people that this is not going to happen to them, What plans, finances and work will be done on this?

Will they revamp the public assistance program? encourage people to work and take responsibility for the every day lives. Assisting when needed, but not letting it be a lifestyle for anyone?

The media is more Gobbelesque than Murrowian in its coverage and investigation of issues. It aggravates more than it enlightens.

It is a challenge for both candidates to transcend the propagandizing framing of the media so they as the candidates can articualte their positions and themselves to a nation already balkanized by platitudes and myths:

    Real change from Obama-think again.
In November 2007, Obama came out against a bill that would have reformed the notorious Mining Law of 1872. The current statute, signed into law by Ulysses Grant, allows mining companies to pay a nominal fee, as little as $2.50 an acre, to mine for hardrock minerals like gold, silver, and copper without paying royalties. Yearly profits for mining hardrock on public lands is estimated to be in excess of $1 billion a year according to Earthworks, a group that monitors the industry. Not surprisingly, the industry spends freely when it comes to lobbying: an estimated $60 million between 1998-2004 according to The Center on Public Integrity. And it appears to be paying off, yet again.

The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 would have finally overhauled the law and allowed American taxpayers to reap part of the royalties (4 percent of gross revenue on existing mining operations and 8 percent on new ones). The bill provided a revenue source to cleanup abandoned hardrock mines, which is likely to cost taxpayers over $50 million, and addressed health and safety concerns in the 11 affected western states.

Later it came to light that one of Obama''s key advisors in Nevada is a Nevada-based lobbyist in the employ of various mining companies (CBS News "Obama''s Position On Mining Law Questioned. Democrat Shares Position with Mining Executives Who Employ Lobbyist Advising Him," November 14, 2007).
