Starting Gate: Sniper Fire

(White House Photo)
As CBS News' Sharyl Attkisson reports, Hillary Clinton's 1996 visit to war-torn Bosnia wasn't quite the harrowing experience that she recounted in a campaign speech last week. While campaign "embellishments" aren’t exactly a novel part of politics, their unveiling can be especially damaging when it involves the underlying argument a candidate is selling.

In recent weeks we've seen a bit of erosion in Clinton's claims of "experience," aided by the release of her public schedules as First Lady and an examination of her role in national security and international relations during the 1990s. That 3am phone call ad suddenly doesn't look like such a good idea right now.

When confronted with a different tale than the one Clinton had relayed in last week's speech, in which she said her plane had landed amid sniper fire and resulted in a dangerous dash to the waiting cars, Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson allowed that the candidate has misspoken. "The facts are clear from contemporaneous news accounts that she was entering a potentially dangerous situation," Wolfson told reporters in a conference call. "She has written about this before, she has talked about this before and there you have it. Now, is it possible that in the most recent instance in which she discussed this that she misspoke."

Clinton herself echoed that characterization. "I went to 80 countries, you know," she told the Philadelphia Daily News editorial board. "I gave contemporaneous accounts, I wrote about a lot of this in my book. You know, I think that, a minor blip, you know, if I said something that, you know, I say a lot of things - millions of words a day - so if I misspoke, that was just a misstatement."

That all doesn’t quite add up to Roger Clemens' contention that his friend and colleague "Andy Pettitte "had "misremembered" about steroid use but it's not helpful all the same.

It was just a week ago when the feeding frenzy surrounded Barack Obama and his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and that's where Clinton needed it. Faced with a thread-the-needle campaign strategy that rests on winning big in Pennsylvania and carrying that through to victories in Indiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky and Puerto Rico, every day spent on something like this only adds to the challenge.

At the end of the day, even if Clinton were to run the table in the next ten contests, it will be the superdelegates who will most likely decided this nomination fight. In order to make the sale with them, she needs to be nearly perfect. Misstatement or not, she can't afford those kinds of mistakes.

My Kingdom For A Fixed Rate Mortgage: John McCain will address the housing situation in remarks to the Orange County Hispanic small business roundtable today and, according to prepared remarks released by the campaign, will say he's prepared to approach solutions with an open mind. "I will consider any and all proposals based on their cost and benefits," the remarks read. "In this crisis, as in all I may face in the future, I will not allow dogma to override common sense."

McCain says he "will not play election year politics with the housing crisis. I will evaluate everything in terms of whether it might be harmful or helpful to our effort to deal with the crisis we face now." But he does say that he'll draw the line at rewarding what he calls irresponsible decisions. "I have always been committed to the principle that it is not the duty of government to bail out and reward those who act irresponsibly, whether they are big banks or small borrowers. Government assistance to the banking system should be based solely on preventing systemic risk that would endanger the entire financial system and the economy."

Democratic Enthusiasm Boosts PA Numbers: The number of registered Democratic voters in Pennsylvania ran past four million for the first time in the state's history as the registration period for the state's April 22nd primary ended yesterday. In the past year, Democrats have added 161,000 voters to their rolls, according to the AP while GOP registration declined about one percent to just over 3.2 million. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, 14,256 voters registered as Democrats in just the week between March 10 and 17th and over 29,000 switched their party affiliation to Democrat in that week.

Around The Track

  • It's getting harder and harder to envision but the very tone of the Democratic contest is keeping the idea of a dream ticket somewhat open, as the USA Today notes. "The fact is you've got a very close race … and people on both sides are getting more dug in with their particular candidate," says former Clinton Chief of Staff Leon Panetta. "That raises the potential that whoever gets the nomination, the other candidate will feel like he or she has been robbed." And what better way to soothe those feelings than a dream ticket?

  • The Democratic National Committee yesterday approved Puerto Rico's plan to switch its nominating contest from a caucus to a primary, opening the process up to a great many more voters for one of the final scheduled contest of the campaign, on June 3rd.

  • Bill Clinton continues to be the focus of the campaign's rural strategy. In recent days he's been in Indiana and West Virginia. Today, he's in Kentucky which holds its primary on May 20th.

  • "Obama Girl" is back and is on the attack in a new video, chastising Clinton for staying in the race and asserting that "we all have a crush on Obama." Obama Girl sings, "these attacks are insane, they just help John McCain."

At least she has actually been to Bosnia, unlike the well seasoned Senator from Illinois. What is up with Emil Jones and Obama anyway?

This isn''t quite as ridiculous as her claim that she was named after Sir Edmund Hillary (she wasn''t), but it reveals her anabashed compulsion to paint herself in a positive light no matter what. I suppose being married to a charming, if pathological "truth-bender" has something to do with her tainted charater, but "Hills" should remember one key difference: Hubby pres Bill gets away with it because he is warm and charismatic. She, on the other hand, has about as much charm and warmth as a pit viper. For someone so smart, she is making some incredibly stupid mistakes lately.

Hillary Clinton lied. She gave a lot of details on that trip to Bosnia that she knew was not true. She got caught and will get caught on other lies as well. When you set out to lie, deceive and destroy others for your own personal gain, it catches up to you. I see Hillary as a cold and calculating person who will do and say anything to get what she wants. I dislike gutter politicians. Really!

The Bosnian death toll of 100000 people is an enormous tragedy, but still it is not the same as the widely accepted figure of 200000.

What I find sad about this is that we should expect more from our political leaders than they are giving us. This statement is more than an embellishment it is fiction. Fiction used to enhance her position. Because of this one lie, she does not deserve to be President. Yet she has lied about her roll in supporting Nafta. She has lied about SCHIPS, she has lied about who she is named after. What else will she lie about. This is not a single instance, it is a pattern and because of it she does not deserve to be President, let alone senator.

    Liar Liar Pants on Fire!

It turns out that Clinton didn''t "MISSPEAK"

She was READING her speech when she said:

"I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base"

Look at the speech on her website and you''ll see that that LIE was in her prepared remarks:

    http://www.jabberwonk.com/flinker.cfm?cliid=gywad

How can you say you "MISSPOKE" if you are READING the lines?

If Hillary is MISS POKE, does that make Bill MR POKE?

This is serious stuff! Hillary was well aware that she was lying regarding this trip (there is no other sniper event she could have been confused about) and had to know full well that with the state of the american media nowdays she would be shown to be a fraud.
To me it raises serious concerns regarding her mental state - if you know its false, know you will get caught for making the statement and know it will create difficulty for you, then I have concerns that her making the statement s might be due to a mental health issue.

With their long range aiming goggle on top of their rifles, they mixed Hillary with that same night performing star. Matter of facts the Snipers heard of the event taking place that evening and decided not to shoot the Star, being transported on a military jet. Otherwise, the sniping was beautifully active during the day and many victims fell within its range.

IF I said something like that. IF I misspoke. She either said it or she didn''t, and the evidence is quite clear that she did and that what she said was untrue. Why all the "ifs?" If her lack of candor here was a "minor blip," perhaps she is comparing it to the "millions of words" she says she speaks everyday; certainly not to what one would expect from a reasonably truthful person.

Does Senator Clinton always use "you know" this often when she is being candid? Or does that never happen?

Everybody is making this the worst thing that can be done, she embellished about a trip to Bosnia, what troubles me is the fact someone is checking every statement she makes.
Now she is a pathological liar, what she said hurt no one but herself, stop reaching beyond what she did. All politicians will embellish things they have done to look better and win votes. Who out there hasn''t told a story with added exploits to feel good about themselves and look good in someone else''s eyes? Don''t tell me, "But she is running for president" But who is to say, maybe there were Snipers but couldn''t get off a shot.
So, once again the media has blown another story out of porportion yet, a man of the cloth that was a guiding factor in Obama''s life, talks treson about America only to get honorable mention for a day.

IF she misspoke, it was just a "Minor blip." Indeed. Not compared to what one would expect of an honest person; perhaps only in reference to the "million" words she speaks everyday.

Question: does Senator Clinton use "you know" this often when she thinks she is being truthful? Or is that such a rare occurrence that no comparison is possible?

Three Myths About the Democratic Race
MYTH: Barack Obama is running a positive campaign that will unite Americans.
FACT: Barack Obama and his advisers have conducted a divisive "full assault" on Hillary''s character.
If Sen. Obama can''t unify Democrats in a primary, how can he unify Americans in a general election?
MYTH: The delegate "math" works decisively against Hillary.
FACT: The delegate math reflects an extremely close race that either candidate can win.
    "
MYTH: For Hillary to win, super delegates must "overturn the will of the people."
FACT: The race is virtually tied, the "will of the people" is split, and both candidates need super

Do we expect any better from her? People as Hillary always says "Get Real". She lies, misrepresents, and is evasive just like she was during the Clinton years with her husband. He specifically the main toxic one. I guess guilt by association. She could of left him long ago but why did she stay. Well because she needed him and his contacts to be standing before us today. If you review her records of time in office she was starting the discussions around running for president right after Monica Luinski! These are the facts. For all the experience she has looked were it has gotten her? Essentially not running her campaign with better which would be demonstrated by her experiences plus her husbands. Whats that about.

How is it that Hillary and Johnny Mc are allowed to "misspeak" early and often when it comes to Iran, Al Queda, being fired on by snipers in Bosnia, I was so *** important in the Irish peace process, etc.) and not get hit for it but comments from not Obama, but his former pastor, still have Obama in hot water? Hmmm. Sounds like the establishment is a bit afeared of a possible Obama presidency and is trying to run him out of the contest on "bi-partisan" rail to me.

You are right that Hillary can''t afford these misstatements. And as a supporter, I don''t like her either to make the misstatements or make the mistakes. But, a little perspective please. Obama has taken credit for legislation he contributed little to. He lied about having been in Wright''s congregation on numerous occasions in which he heard inappropriate remarks. These are serious misstatements as well. His supporters take Hillary to task for having a ghost writer for It Takes a Village. But, a former professor of mine wrote substantial portions of JFK''s Profiles in Courage for which JFK received an award -- and an award that keeps on giving through the Kennedy family''s awarding of Profiles in Courage awards every year. And, Obama''s autobiography is not an accurate history. He admits (as if this makes it OK) to using composites in order to tell his story. Jimmy Carter said he''d never lie to us, but believe me, he did ..... and terribly so.

Does this litany make any of this right?

No. Our politicians -- everyone -- should aspire to honesty and attempt to achieve it all the time. But we are flawed.

It would be better to focus our attention on the issues. The media is extraordinarily biased in how it handles these personal attacks. And it is so easy for the media to cover red-faced people -- even fun. How about focusing on the difficult task of exploring the critical issues we face?

It%u2019s not who to vote for but, what to vote for%u2026.

A vote for John McCain is:

    Perpetual War
Unfair taxation of the middle class

    Corruption
Religious hypocrisy and abuse of church status tax laws
    Degradation of our infrastructure
Continued export of American jobs to overseas slave labor
Decline in US stature and respect of the world community

We must not continue the practice of voting against our own better interests.

McCain is by far the superior candidate. I don''t know where the person gets his information (maybe Hillary/Billy) who misrepresented the positions for which John McCain stands, but that list was so far off the mark I''m not even going to comment on it further. Hillary may be a great mother (not to be disparaged, by the way) but she is a person who will do and say anything to get elected. I hate the way she''s run her campaign, and the way she has misrepresented her experience. Being First Lady is an important responsibility, but when did SHE ever have to answer a 3am phone call. Thankfully, Senator Clinton has cleared it all up, so we can go on with the real issues:

This from Pittsburgh this morning "On saying last week that she landed under sniper fire during a trip to Bosnia in 1996, when she was first lady:"I was sleep-deprived, and I misspoke."

    http://tinyurl.com/2rwf8r

There you have it. No big problem anymore.

Wait a minute. What about that call on the red phone at 3:00 AM? Will the makeup and pants suit take care of the sleep deprivation problem? Of course it will.

Good grief. She just digs the hole deeper and deeper. Soon she will be dodging sniper fire in China.

Unbelievable. I used to support her, but I cant trust her anymore. Sorry, Hill.

McCain misspoke when he said "Al Qaeda" and meant Iran.

Obama misspoke when he said "President" of Canada and meant Prime Minister.
