Not The Safest Trip, But No Sniper Fire
Sharyl Attkisson is an investigative correspondent for CBS News.
That's me talking to the first lady on a military cargo plane on our trip to war-torn Bosnia in 1996.
Back in 1996 I was assigned to travel with the First Lady on her trip to Bosnia, Greece, Turkey and Italy.
Bosnia was the first stop. We spent nine hours there, arriving on a military cargo plane and moving around within the country on giant Chinook helicopters.
Sen. Hillary Clinton gave an account of our arrival in Bosnia during a speech last Monday at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., saying she remembers "landing under sniper fire" and that conditions on the ground were too dangerous for a planned arrival ceremony.
"There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport," Clinton said. "But instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
Watch Clinton's remarks
Due to the possibility of sniper fire, our pilots used what we were told are "assault take-offs and landings." In short, the climb and descent are very fast, and very steep to minimize exposure to hostile fire on the ground.
It's exciting and frightening and, in the midst of it all, wearing our helmets and bulletproof vests, it's easy to imagine we may be narrowly escaping enemy bullets.
In reality, we had no known incidents of enemy fire on our aircraft. Mindful of the fact that we were with the First Lady, and that she was venturing farther inside Bosnia than her husband the President had ever gone, reporters kept a close eye to the crowds and never entirely went off-guard.
However, the mood upon first landing at the Tuzla airport was light. Children were there on the tarmac to greet the first lady, Chelsea was by her side, Bosnian dignitaries had gathered: It felt safe.
Watch Sharyl's March 25, 1996, report on Clinton's arrival in Bosnia:
Later, Mrs. Clinton and her party ventured further into the country via military helicopter, landing at one of the former frontlines of the war, Camp Alicia. According to my notes of the event, the First Lady and Chelsea deboarded without incident and made their way down a line of American soldiers, thanking them for their service. They climbed a lookout tower, were shown a mine-sweeping machine, and talked to a number of soldiers. They shared jokes with the troops, ate a meal there and then moved onto another Camp: Camp Bedrock. Mrs. Clinton and Chelsea walk off the plane and were taken to visit M*A*S*H patients nearby.
To be sure, it was not the "safest" trip for a First Lady to take: there were serious risks in traveling to Bosnia, even for the President's wife under the vigilant protection of the U.S. military. It took some guts for her to go. But I don't recall, and did not note, any close calls on this trip with sniper fire or any other dangers.
Update: In a conference call with reporters this afternoon, Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson answered questions about Clinton's assertions, allowing that it is possible she "misspoke."
Wolfson: "The facts are clear from contemporaneous news accounts that she was entering a potentially dangerous situation. She has written about this before, she has talked about this before and there you have it. Now, is it possible that in the most recent instance in which she discussed this that she misspoke, with regards to the exit from the plane, but there's no question that I hope everyone is clear about this in the reporting, there is no question if you look at these contemporaneous accounts that she was going to a potential combat zone, that it was by the front lines and the first person since Eleanore Roosevelt to do that and she was going into a hostile military environment."

I admire - how little Media is saying that to us. facts should be desclosed, so voters would not be fooled again and again by Clintons.
I think, that is the goal of Media.
Please, work on it.
Maybe she just forgot, give her a break guys. She made a mistake, lol.
- wasn''t born here in NY
- wasn''t raised here in NY
- wasn''t educated here in NY
- never lived here in NY
and we think she would actually bend the truth to suit her own means - I''m aghast that anyone would think that - lol

Yes the rules clearly state that if enough favors are owed to your husband and the party bosses feel its OK to prostitute the position of Senator from NY - then it is legal to become that Senator

It''s is interesting to note to what lengths the anti-Hillary people will go to discredit her and accuse her of lies. The story and videos above make it quite clear that Clinton and her entourage were indeed told that sniper fire was a possibility upon landing in Bosnia and all precautions (such as steep "assault landings", bullet-proof vests, etc.) were taken. She also went to other active bases further inland. It was a dangerous trip and she was brave to go, and to take her daughter, EVEN IF she did not get shot in the process!

You should check the record of your beloved Hilary. She has been NV or not voting almost as much as Obama. But we digress, because when HIlary visited Bosnia, she was not in the Senate. How many times has she visited since she became Senator. And how many times under fire? WAit. don''t bother answering that. For Hilary''s voting record and a sneak peek at her not voting due to being absent or abstention see: http://www.votesmart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=55463

LOL. since when has Hillary needed help in having her lies catch up with her--it''s just like with Bush--too easy to follow those lies. When does Hillary lie? Almost whenever her lips are moving. LMAO

Posted by libra127 at 02:37 PM : Mar 24, 2008
Yeah. She also took Sinbad and Sheryl Crow. Nothing like a comdedian, a rocker and a teenage daughter to deflect a lot of sniper fire--not to mention the extra help with the little 8 year old Bosnian on the tarmac. Hillary is a liar and she also is a fraud--but worse of all she has some sort of memory loss--like Bush, (and him saying he never said to stay the course in Iraq) Hillary appears to frequently forget that her moves and words are recorded--too easy to play them back and show not only embellishments--but out and out LIES. LOL. Her supporters KNOW she is a liar and now (just like Bush supporters) they find themselves continually fielding and defending their lying pick.
Posted by smashwl7 at 02:35 PM : Mar 24, 2008
Does she? Hillary may be what many have claimed her to be in the past: a Congenital liar. If so, then she actually does not know the difference between the truth and a lie. She certainly does not seem to know the difference between what she says now and what video and transcripts can show in contradiction later.

Now that I have watched the video of what she actually said and know the context of what she said about ducking her head, I think she meant it in a metaphorical way. Given that they''d been warned there MIGHT be sniper fire and that various precautions had been taken (like giving passengers bullet-proof vests and making an assault-type landing), I suspect they FELT LIKE ducking their heads even when it turned out there was no sniper fire. She didn''t make a big point about it, only her detractors do that. The real point was that it was (or she had been led to believe it was) a potentially dangerous trip. The reporter who accompaniede her provides independent evidence of that.
Does his trip make her a foreign affairs expert?
Was it taken out of a purely unselfish desire to render comfort to the ill---or---was it a purely selfish ''photo op'' knowing she would be running for political office in the future?!
These questions---and others---are left up to the readers to decide for themselves! Think, people!
Posted by b-easy63 at 02:48 PM : Mar 24, 2008
She did not "take" them and I did not see them arriving with her. The reporter who accompanied her and wrote the story doesn''t mention them. They may have made an independent trip at the same time. That is irrelevant to the story of Hillary''s trip.
Metaphorical lies? Uhmmmm Okay. Sort of like when she said she negotiated the opening of the borders that were already opened BEFORE she got there? We see. Now. Metaphoric these lies too then:

=S4vn4cBm
FACT - Hillary did have a reception when she claims it was cancelled due to sniper fire.
FACT - If she truly remembers it as being so dangerous why in gods name would she put her teenage daughter in the middle of it.
A huge lie, and once again proof of doing or saying anything to get elected - sorry not buying it - and oh by the way - the race for the Democratic nominee is over, you lost - go home and start thinking up some tall tales for your next election.
I like Obama but I really do not want to bash Hillary any more. I am real tired of all the in-fighting we are having.

Late to the news articles are you? Haven''t read anything else on this trip? Sinbad and Sheryl Crow accompanied her on this trip. It is well known and has been talked about a lot. Do you need a link? Perhaps you''d like the link that has a picture of Hilary singing with Sinbad, Chelsea, Sheryl and a soldier? Or do you want the quote from Sinbad about the trip where the only red phone moment was deciding which restaurant to go to.
So sad, when Dem. Become apologists and shills for their candidates just like the neo cons blindly follow and defend Bush, isn''t it? LMAO
Posted by stn_sage at 02:52 PM : Mar 24, 2008
I''d say that meeting with foreign leaders and talking to the troops at the front certainly provided her with experiences and knowledge that she wouldn''t have gotten if she''d stayed home. Multiply that by the 80 or so countries she visited as First Lady and you get...well, ALOT of experience. I''m not sure anyone qualifies as a foreign policy EXPERT. If there were "experts", the world wouldn''t be in such sad shape. Hillary never claimed to be a foreign policy expert; she claimed to have alot of relevant experience. I agree, she does.
Posted by b-easy63 at 02:55 PM : Mar 24, 2008
No, metaphorical statements. You''re starting to sound desperate, b-easy. LOL.
such a little liar, and now--the links so some of her supporters can stop trying to defend her lies or at least stop trying to pretend she is nothing more than what she is--a lying politician:

ENJOY!!!

You forgot to address Hillary''s other lies? and you only WISH I was desperate. As an Independent--I could careless if either of the Dems get the election, Because of the 3 candidates in the race--NONE are of the caliber to run the country or stop the free fall of the dollar, the recession or stop the spending monster--but maybe you think the healthcare/collegefunds/mortgage freeze/credit card freezes/state bailouts that Hillary is offering is the answer. Except the question was never asked--"how do any of these candidates plan to dig us out of this recession and stop the runaway government spending"
But again digression, you still haven''t metaphorically spun some of Hil''s other lies--go for it. LMAO:

She did NOT make a mountain out of it. Did you READ the article above and WATCH the 2 videos ? They speak for themselves and I think any rational and UNBIASED person can come to their own conclusions.
Wake up people!

Hillary Clinton is a huge liar and you appear to be one of the lying liars enabling her. Looks like Franken may need to write another book about what happens when the lying liars are Dems. too blindly following their own polititcal pony to ever own up to or demand the truth.
Posted by b-easy63 at 02:58 PM : Mar 24, 2008
What you don''t seem to understand, b-easy, is that NONE of that belies the important point. She had meetings with Bosnian leaders as a representative of the US government. She visited several sites on the front and talked with American soldiers. This provided her with knowledge and experience. The fact that Sinbad and Crow also went to Bosnia to entertain the troops is irrelevant. The off-hand remark about ducking bullets is irrelevant to the point and I think was likely meant metaphorically. It''s not important. It''s not what''s at issue here. It''s been blown WAY out of proportion by her detractors for their own political purposes.
she lies. We can all see it on the video, what is not pretty is what her supporters have to do--to pretend that
:
.A. The lies do not matter
B.every politician lies just as much
C. Hillary is misunderstood
D. The lies are really not lies at all, just metaphorical statements that look like lies because everyone else refuses to drink the Kool aide
Posted by libra127 at 03:18 PM : Mar 24, 2008
Nope, what I don''t understand is how you can so easily and readily defend and continue to support a liar. Because the fact is, her lies may not stop with what we now know--they may include all that she has promised you and others--what then? Think because we have had to swallow Republican lies for over 7 years, that they will go down better when the liar is a Dem? That is what you don''t understand--anyone can justify a lie--but the fact that justification is necessary--is the telling point.
Posted by tastytone at 03:13 PM : Mar 24, 2008
The reporter who accompanied her verifies that it was indeed true that they were told that sniper fire was a possibility. The reporter says they were given bullet-proof vests to wear. The reporter also says that an "assault-type" steep descent was used. These were pre-cautions. It turned out that there was no sniper fire. Given the pre-cautions they had to take, Hillary''s was of putting it seems like a metaphorical statement to me (like she felt like she should duck in case of fire). It''s not some outrageous lie like some make it out to be. It''s not relevant to whether her visit provided her with foreign experience in a war zone. That''s the important point and is the reason she brought up her Bosnia visit at all.
Posted by tastytone at 03:13 PM : Mar 24, 2008
No, she did make important contributions to the peace process in N. Ireland and there are a number of Irish leaders who have verified this. I have posted some of them on the CBS site already and don''t plan on digging them up again. They are easy to find through Google. I think one site was www.irishecho.com.

and when she says the reception was cancelled due to the sniper fire--was that a metaphor too? LOL. Give it up--there is a line between your personal honor/ integrity and defending your candidate--don''t let zealousness or competitiveness erase that line.

sorry--I should have prefaced with "For most people there is a line between your personal honor/integrity..."
If such attributes are not something you believe in or subscribe to, by all means keep defending the liar-and continue on as you were.
