Not The Safest Trip, But No Sniper Fire
Sharyl Attkisson is an investigative correspondent for CBS News.
That's me talking to the first lady on a military cargo plane on our trip to war-torn Bosnia in 1996.
Back in 1996 I was assigned to travel with the First Lady on her trip to Bosnia, Greece, Turkey and Italy.
Bosnia was the first stop. We spent nine hours there, arriving on a military cargo plane and moving around within the country on giant Chinook helicopters.
Sen. Hillary Clinton gave an account of our arrival in Bosnia during a speech last Monday at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., saying she remembers "landing under sniper fire" and that conditions on the ground were too dangerous for a planned arrival ceremony.
"There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport," Clinton said. "But instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
Watch Clinton's remarks
Due to the possibility of sniper fire, our pilots used what we were told are "assault take-offs and landings." In short, the climb and descent are very fast, and very steep to minimize exposure to hostile fire on the ground.
It's exciting and frightening and, in the midst of it all, wearing our helmets and bulletproof vests, it's easy to imagine we may be narrowly escaping enemy bullets.
In reality, we had no known incidents of enemy fire on our aircraft. Mindful of the fact that we were with the First Lady, and that she was venturing farther inside Bosnia than her husband the President had ever gone, reporters kept a close eye to the crowds and never entirely went off-guard.
However, the mood upon first landing at the Tuzla airport was light. Children were there on the tarmac to greet the first lady, Chelsea was by her side, Bosnian dignitaries had gathered: It felt safe.
Watch Sharyl's March 25, 1996, report on Clinton's arrival in Bosnia:
Later, Mrs. Clinton and her party ventured further into the country via military helicopter, landing at one of the former frontlines of the war, Camp Alicia. According to my notes of the event, the First Lady and Chelsea deboarded without incident and made their way down a line of American soldiers, thanking them for their service. They climbed a lookout tower, were shown a mine-sweeping machine, and talked to a number of soldiers. They shared jokes with the troops, ate a meal there and then moved onto another Camp: Camp Bedrock. Mrs. Clinton and Chelsea walk off the plane and were taken to visit M*A*S*H patients nearby.
To be sure, it was not the "safest" trip for a First Lady to take: there were serious risks in traveling to Bosnia, even for the President's wife under the vigilant protection of the U.S. military. It took some guts for her to go. But I don't recall, and did not note, any close calls on this trip with sniper fire or any other dangers.
Update: In a conference call with reporters this afternoon, Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson answered questions about Clinton's assertions, allowing that it is possible she "misspoke."
Wolfson: "The facts are clear from contemporaneous news accounts that she was entering a potentially dangerous situation. She has written about this before, she has talked about this before and there you have it. Now, is it possible that in the most recent instance in which she discussed this that she misspoke, with regards to the exit from the plane, but there's no question that I hope everyone is clear about this in the reporting, there is no question if you look at these contemporaneous accounts that she was going to a potential combat zone, that it was by the front lines and the first person since Eleanore Roosevelt to do that and she was going into a hostile military environment."

See all 175 Commentsto their cars. This is her foreign experience. Just another LIE!!!
In regards to her being against NAFTA her own papers or schedules now show she actively campaigned in support of NAFTA. Just another LIE!!!
She said she was instrumental in making the Peace in Ireland Now other diplomats that were there say that is not true. This is her foreign
experience. Just another LIE!!!
Hillary claimed to have negotiated the open borders in Kosnavo, when she visited there. The truth is they were opened (3) three days before she went there. Just another LIE!!!
Hillary is being sued and soon will be prosecuted for Campaign Fraud in California. The Video is on YouTube.
Hillary and Bill both received funds from Rezko. Why has Hillary not ackowledged it? Why has she not told the American people about that? Nor have they returned the funds.
What other LIES has she told in her Campaign???
Later, Obama stated he may have heard some distasteful sermons, but DEFINITELY NOT THE MORE SEVERE SERMONS BEING PLAYED IN SOUNDBITES IN THE MEDIA.
Later he said he never agreed with Mr. Wrights statements trashing our country (but he never bothered to get up and walk out in the middle of a sermon).
Remember this, Rosa Parks may have had to ride in the back of the bus, but Obama%u2019s white grandmother got run over by the bus%u2026..and it was driven by her grandson, Barack H. Obama. AND THAT IS A FACT!
lie''s (just because they''re human?)
What Hillary did was a blatantly lie. She lied for the purpose of
obtaining a job . The bigest most important job, that of our Commander
in Chief.
Anyone else would be thrown out of a job application , or fired from a
job for telling a lie like that during the application process. Yet the
media seem to be pussyfooting around what happened here.
I''m not sure which is scarier. The fact that Hillary repeatedly told
this same lie with not a sign of guilt while looking directly into the
faces of Americans in the crowd and never flinched while lieing.
Or what seems to be a mis-perception on her part of the differences
between "lieing", mis-speaking and making an honest mistake.
Maybe she ought to be questioned about her tax returns? Her earmark list? Where did her $5 million loan come from? Who is James Manning and Doug Coe and her connection to them?
American taxpayers deserve to know.
Disgraceful.
What about Obama? He embellished his resume as a community organizer. People who worked with him during his community organizing days remember it quite differently. He told some %u201Cwhoppers%u201D in his book. When is the media going to scrutinize him? Oh, that%u2019s right scrutiny only comes in one color: Hillary Clinton.
I%u2019m so fed up with the vile, degrading anti-Hillary bashing by women haters. I%u2019m also fed up with misogynists like: Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman with their unscrupulous anti-Hillary and pro-Obama reporting. Seriously, it%u2019s like viewing a non-stop Obama commercial on MSNBC, which I think is or should be illegal under campaign laws.
First of all, the Bosnia thing is a tempest in a teapot, hardly in the same league as Obama and Wright%u2019s 20+ year association.
With regard to Nafta and Northern Ireland the press only reports what supports their contention. That they are biased is nothing new. Who said %u201Cdo not underestimate the stupidity of the American public%u201D ? To that I add, %u201C.. and the sycophantic media nincompoops%u201D
These links provide newslinks that support Hillary%u2019s claim. Don%u2019t just take Hillary%u2019s word for it. Read articles by other news sources not the usual ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NYT, WashingtonPost. Always more sides to one story.

She has lied about her role in Northern Ireland and has been caught lying again. She even lied to Edmund Hillary that the spelling of her name was after his; as he was reported to have to said it was unlikely her parents would have heard of an obscure New Zealand beekeeper as her birth pre-dated him climbing Mt Everest.
Her legisative record is limited and her foreign experience negligible. I am not aware that she has ever managed a large organisation in either the private or public sector.
If she is elected, God help America.
IF you really was under sniper fire, WHY are you so hellbent on becoming the Commander-in-Chief? Didn''t that scary experience cause a lil woman like you a case of involuntary bowel movements? Aren''t you glad you didn''t pack light for the trip lil missy? Please leave the management of the Iraq War to men folk, who don''t *** themselves when they come under sniper attack. See lil woman playing president and being president is two different things. Ask yourself lil woman, If a leader leads by example, Do you really enhance the troops'' confidence when you smudge your mascara with tears because you come under small arms fire? Stand Down, ''lil missy and let a real man lead.
This trip was taking place 4 months after the war ended, the bosnian warring factions had been long disbanded. There were no combat or frontlines in spring 96, and at that time the Nato troops were bulldozing the former lines, while the bosnians were going through a political dialog. There were no armed bands roaming around with "sniper rifles" firing off at the airport, close by, or anywhere else for that matter. The reporter here fails to state that no danger could result from "armed elements".
She also fails to elaborate that no trip with any "potential threat" would have been authorised by the Pentagon and the Secret Service, even if Clinton were some lunatic mother, responsible for the lives of her teenage child, and accompanying american civilians. She also fails to point out that the Nato troops and SS, as a precautionary measure, secured at least a 5km radius around the base. It is incomprehensible to think that Clinton, her daughter would stroll around the base with no helmets on, if there was as much as 0.1% of potential hostile fire.
By the way, i was a war reporter during the bosnian war.
Some say that I, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, should have spent Easter weekend in Chappaqua, writing my withdrawal speech and preparing for my return to the Senate. They ask why I stay in the %u201908 race when Obama has an insurmountable lead in states, delegates, and popular vote. My strategy is for victory in the 2012 presidential election. I will continue to pursue several lines of attack on Obama including denouncing his experience, blaming him for the fiascos in Michigan & Florida, and even praising our Republican rival Senator John McCain as more patriotic and experienced than Obama. My goal is to do extensive damage to Obama to ensure that he looses the general election in %u201908 and pave the way for my eventual election in 2012! It%u2019s a HILLARYOUS strategy, but I will be president by any means necessary.
1. Obama leads Hillary Clinton in delegates by 121, popular vote by almost 750,000, he also leads in the number of states won. However, Senator Bayh of Indiana, who backs Clinton for president, proposed a new Hillaryous gauge by which superdelegates might judge whether to support Clinton or Obama. He suggested that they consider the electoral votes of the states that each of them has won. What a hillaryously undemocratic method to override the will of the majority of the voters in the Democratic party.

With all due respect, I have persons of African descent in my family as well as those who are of black Irish descent. Not to diminish the two, but other people DO differentiate and even pale or light colored blacks are treated differently by whites than those of darker skin. There really is NO comparison. Your remark is just as demeaning to blacks and others as you implied about people who have minority friends, you really have no clue. consider that some will accept black Irish and some will not-but a black with dark skin, lives with maltreatment almost every day of their lives, not just occassionally at stores when they travel with someone else.
