Obama Says Press Bites on Clinton Spin

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

HOUSTON -- Barack Obama described Hillary Clinton today as a “tenacious” candidate but blamed her for running a negative campaign. He said Clinton has employed a “kitchen sink” strategy in attacking him, and that negative ads running against him may have caused a sense of “turbulence” in the minds of voters.

“I am a little surprised that all the complaining about the refs has worked as it has for them. This whole spin of just how the press has been tough on them and not tough on us. I didn't expect that you guys would bite on that,” Obama said.

Michelle Obama, who has been campaigning alone in Texas and Ohio, called her husband “calm, cool, and collected.”

“You know this is a tough game, you know this is how it goes,” Michelle Obama told the reporters on the plane. “This hasn't been anything other than what we expected. You have to be ready for tough questions and he's handled himself well.”

Meantime, he continues to downplay expectations for today’s contests, saying that the results will be very close and he doesn’t expect Hillary Clinton to gain on his pledged delegate lead.

“We know there's not going to be a huge shift in delegates one way or another just given the math, which means that either way we will go to Mississippi and Wyoming next week.” Obama told reporters on the flight from Houston to San Antonio.

TORONTO %u2014 Canada%u2019s conservative government said Tuesday it was investigating the leak of a memo that suggested Barack Obama%u2019s harsh words about the North American Free Trade Agreement were for political show.

The memo circulated within the government and obtained by The Associated Press said Obama%u2019s senior economic adviser, Austan Goolsbee, discussed the debate over free trade in the Democratic presidential primary campaign with Canadian officials in Chicago.

%u201CThe primary campaign has been necessarily domestically focused, particularly in the Midwest, and that much of the rhetoric that may be perceived to be protectionist is more reflective of political maneuvering than policy,%u201D Goolsbee was quoted as saying in the memo.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Tuesday called the memo%u2019s leak %u201Ccompletely unacceptable,%u201D and vowed his government would find out who was responsible.

%u201CThe Canadian Embassy in Washington expressed it%u2019s apologies regarding the leaking of this information,%u201D Harper said in Parliament. %u201CThe government is trying to find who%u2019s responsible for this information being made public.%u201D

Harper has disputed the suggestion that his government was trying to complicate Obama%u2019s chances or favor Republican Sen. John McCain, who strongly supports NAFTA.

Obama is a master at spin....he cleverly turned the South Carolina campaign against the Clintons by getting people to believe they were racist...what a joke, but people bought it unbelievably. He is always playing the victim....people need to wake up and recognize his ploys. He''s been very negative toward her...he''s using all the ploys in Karl Rove''s playbook against her but fortunately, more people are not fooled by him.

Prayerman3 says: "...I think in the consitution it should be put that no human beig that has a muslium name should not be allowed to be President."

This is one of the types of ignorant comments that will tear the Democratic party apart. I wish I could say that this is only one voice in the wilderness, but Hillary''s negative tactics -- and the results she''s getting from them-- proves just the opposite. Please stop spouting this nonsense. It is time for Americans to finally realize that this nation is populated with many people whose names ARE NOT "Bill," "John," "Mary," and "Susie".

Hillary registers very strong with uneducated voters.

Wow - aren''''t these the folks that react most to negative - fear mongering tactics. Way to go Hillary, those that can''''t think for themselves are on your side. What an accomplishment

Sounds like sour grapes on Obama''s part. He didn''t complain to the press when they were "biting" on his spin. The thing is his ploy to paint Hillary as "desperate", as if she was one of the "Desperate Housewives", to be made fun of and disregarded-- well frankly it backfired on him.

Finally, Hillary has dominated the news cycle the way she wanted to. It probably comes in time to salvage an Ohio victory but is too late for a win in Texas. But the night is still young, and Obama''s grassroots ground game has cleaned the Clintons'' clock, scoring victories in states that Hillary and Bill said were insignificant, and states where they did but Obama won handily. What a tradeoff! With all of that negative campaigning Hillary can only best hope for a split. After this primary season is over, and all facets of the election is analyzed, Hillary, Bill and Co. will finally realize that Strategy Trumps Tactics, every single time.

So it''s okay that Hillary speak up for herself (a.k.a. whining to the media, whining to the point that her friends on SNL create sketches are her behalf) but by Barack defending himself he is considered being out of line? Please! I agree there is nothing wrong with questioning Barack''s background, but the way that Hillary and her media allies are approaching it is "dirt politics!" Stop being clouded by your apparent bigotry. I was a proud fan of Hillary, but the way her and her campaign have targeted and attacked another member of their own party, is reprehensible, i.e. Canadian memo scheme - which even Canadian officials have denounced as not accurate, the "3 a.m." fear ad, Hillary''s unfounded "Shame on you Barack" tirade. There is a way to campaign and a way not to campaign, she has severely crossed the line... it''s obvious she will do anything to win - it''s a shame.

Its clear to me that Clinton has run a much dirtier, more desperate campaign. It suggests that her ambition to be president has taken the foreground. At the end of the day, it hurts her reputation more than it hurts anyone else.

"Be the change you seek".

He is absolutely correct; the Billary machine is the greates victim polticos ever. How is Rezko stuff coming up again, 1 day before the big primaries? This Clinton dirty politics as usual. By my count of free positive press anf pictures on all new sources in the last week, Hillary was photo - opped about 10 to 1. Anyhow, this is good for Mr Obama to get ready for the general election. I don''t think the honorable Mr McCain will use such deplorable tactics as the Billary Machine - surrogate racism, surrogate Muslim fear-mongering. You always cried about Karl Rove politics, but I think the machine has always been driven with conspiracy victimhood as a main strategy. PS. - Where has the vetting been on all of Hillary and Bill''s fundraising scandals - They are there and being completely ignored by the media , and Barack continues to play by a set of clean campaign ethics which have not been observed ever in recent US election - by the Bush or Billary Regimes

C''mon Barack, you know better than that! How smart this guy can be, he is know trying to play the victim card and crying out loud because the press is finally doing some scrutiny to his "free ride" campaign! If he can''t handle this how is he goign to handle the big Republican attacks and the more in depth scrutiny that every candidate for the presidency should have. he things is that easy, better be ready because he has alot of explaining to do not only in his policies but in his personal life and friends.

I totally agree with the way the media has bit on the Clinton camp spin. I have been following this campaign since the early beginnings last year and the so called "media bias" towards Obama is a farce. The bulk of the negative media attention towards Hillary has been for a number of reason. (1)She ran on the "heir to the throne" campaign before Iowa. At a time when Obama was confident, but humble.(2)Bill went on the attack with outragous words in New Hampshire. (3)Her campaign leads constantly spewed out outlandish claims against Obama.
-planting questions
-workers emailing false muslim rumors
-"cocaine! cocaine!" by Mark Penn
-Jesse Jackson by Bill

There are many more but who has the time to list them all. Obama handles the press with respect and so does his surrogates. Can''t say the same for Clinton. If Obama would''ve lost 11 contest in a row, would we even be talking about him now? He would be like Rudy G. Release the taxes and the presidential library info and be more transparent. And stop changing you strategy every day and maybe the press won''t question you so much. Obama on par with what he started with.

Sen. Clinton is the person that needs to tell the truth about her experience and other issues.
1. What government office then she hold before moving to New York
2. Why did she run for the US. Senate in her home State (Oh I forgot White Water)
3. What experience is obtained being 1st Lady other than greeting people?
Wake up American%u2019s where did her husband go doing the Vietnam War.
