Nader Considering Another White House Run

Consumer advocate Ralph Nader, whose very name can rile up Democrats still stinging from Al Gore's narrow loss in the 2000 election, is flirting with what would be his third major run for the presidency. News reports indicate he's filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission and he's also launched a new Web site, NaderExplore08.org.

The site's launch comes on the same day as Democrat John Edwards' exit from the presidential race. Nader had kind words for Edwards previously, praising his progressive stance on a number of issues and his willingness to challenge corporate interests.

Nader's committee is asking for initial contributions of $300, for which the donor will receive DVDs of Michael Moore's documentary "Sicko," a documentary about Nader, "An Unreasonable Man," along with three books. A posting on the site says the exploratory committee hopes to enlist the support of 1,000 people in each congressional district.

"Maybe we’re wrong," the site's main page says. "Maybe the Democrats and Republicans will nominate Presidential candidates this year who will stand up against the war profiteers, the nuclear industry, the credit card industry, the corporate criminals, big oil, and the drug and health insurance industries. We doubt it."

Nader's latest flirtation with a run is likely to be greeting with eye rolls from the many Democrats who believe that his presence on the Florida ballot in 2000 prevented Al Gore from overtaking George W. Bush in the state and, therefore, the electoral vote. They can take solace, however, in the fact that Nader's 2004 bid had nowhere near the following of his previous try, and he was largely a nonfactor in that race.

Yet,someone else joining the race without a plan telling us how he is going to deal with the issues he has raised. At least we get a free DVD if we show our support is worth more than $300. Gee, the the candidate to whom I did donate was grateful for the $25 I sent and the only thing I expected in return was a hard fought race.

Nader is a spoiler and bordering on senile, right now--his job is to handicap the challenge to the establishmet. Only a fool would give Nader any money--because only fools would vote for such a person. He has no chance of winning, he has no party and therefore--even if elected--would have no base to spring from or to define the parameters of his policies or to facilitate and expedite those policies. So wonder who dug this nut up to handicap the race? Clinton? Or the Republicans?

In retrospect, the entire rationale for Nader''s Presidency, which is that there would be no discernable difference between a Gore or Bush Presidency, still holds up pretty well doesn''t it?

Ralph, you need to forget it..this is an election that you cannot win-yet again-and all you do is waste millions of dollars to pad you old ego..you pulled enough votes to rob Gore of his Presidency and look what we''ve had for the last 8yrs..you''ve had you 15 minutes now give it a rest..you should be ashamed.

For the Nader-Naysayers:

Calling an independent candidate a spoiler is ridiculous. In a true Democracy, independents have just as much of a right to run as anyone else.

Personally I''d like to see someone stand up against corporate interests, and Nader has dedicated his life to fighting Big Money interests and corporations.

Where is the ego in that?

The difficulty with the current 2 party system is that there is very little difference between them, when the rubber meets the road.

You see where George Bush and Bill Clinton have taken us.

Why not give the independent candidate a voice.

And as for the "An indie cannot win," mentality, it''s defeatist thinking.

An independent canidate must run to build a party, and then build it over time.

Maybe Nader won''t likely win the presidency, but if he doesn''t try, what does that say about our politics?

That there''s no room for anyone to step in and challenge the two party system?

And there''s always the possibility that Nader could win!

I give him credit and support for standing up for his beliefs and challenging these big money parties, time and again, even after they crucified him.

Whether you like Nader or not, at least be open minded enough to see that the issues he stands for have real integrity.

The "spoiler" is the plurality election system in which you can win without a majority. Nader isn''t the "spoiler". However, where Nader''s fault lies is in not speaking up loud and clear about the need to reform that system with a measure like Instant Runoff Voting.

If it is between McCain and Billary, I''m for Nader.

GO OBAMA! (or go home)

(seriously, my conscience won''t let me vote for Hill-Bill, it wouldn''t be good for America. I''d vote Republican before I vote Clinton. Besides I like Ralph; he''s a true patriot. If you are just going to call him a spoiler though, maybe I''ll cast my vote for Stetson Kennedy!)

Suggestion: Use the website feedback utility @ http://www.naderexplore08.org and tell Ralph that this would be another unfortunate move. No matter how many good positions he has, he is responsible for W''s plagues. We don''t need any more.

Please don''t run for Prez. I beg you. You can do more as a consumer rights advocate. Rise above petty politics. Mudslinging. Power grabs. Why waste your time? You know you can''t win.

I will NOT have you *** things up like you did before! The Democratic nominee MUST win the White House in Nov! Got that, Ralphie boy?

Republicans are NOT the friend of American consumers! They do NOT give a ***. They''re the friend of BIG BUSINESS/CORPORATIONS/CONTRACTORS. Look what they have done in the last 8 years. You want 4 more of the same?

As much as I respect Ralph Nader, I hope he doesn''t mount another independent campaign. If he decides to run, he should come home to the Green Party. Either way, the Greens have a strong contender in former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. I would prefer to see Nader challenge McKinney for the nomination rather than for the general election.

If you haven''t figured it out, Nader has sold out. Look who bankrolled his last campaign and who is bankrolling this exploration. For instance, look up the FEC Complaint against Nader back in 2004. You''ll see he was in bed with the Citizens (*** Armey is their present President) for a Sound Economy and other right wing organizations. Now he''s in bed with a group called Freedom Watch, look them up. They consider themselves the Conservative answer to MoveOn. It''s all about HIS ego and it doesn''t matter who gets hurt. He''ll take money from anyone.

Nader will run with Gore on a Green independent ticket and win the 2008 election by exposing and fighting against the corporatist Empire hiding behind this facade of ''Vichy America'', which by November will have thrown the US into a second Great Depression and a greatly expanded war in the Middle East.
