On The Road To Prosperity

(CBS)
It doesn’t take long before a bustling Fort Worth highway turns thin and lonely, winding its way north along a vast West Texas landscape pocked by a series of hard bitten homes. Soon we’re driving down Morris Dido Road, which looks a lot like it sounds, dull and dilapidated. Then around the bend it appears – almost out of nowhere – a breathtaking expanse of property that is Kenneth Copeland Ministries.

It was back in the early 1980s that Copeland, a former personal pilot for Oral Roberts, was given these 1,500 acres by a rich oil baron named Paul Pewitt. On this cold winter day it gives the godfather of “Prosperity Gospel” a very good name.

From across the main road it was easy to see parts of his sprawling religious empire – the low-lying Eagle Mountain International Church and shiny new ministry headquarters. To the right the framework of a $10 million “children’s building” is on the rise; far, far beyond, we are told, is the Copeland’s 18,000 square-foot lake-front parsonage where Copeland and wife Gloria often lay their head at night. To the left is the ministry’s private airport and planes; just beyond, cattle stand grazing. Somewhere beyond sight are the gas and oil wells.

Copeland has made it clear to his followers and a certain U.S. Senator named Grassley that all this prosperity – and much, much more – is a by-the-book, tax-exempt blessing from God.

And then there are people like the former ministry employee who told me they lost their faith in Copeland after working inside the mail department, sitting hours on end in front of a computer reading letters from “Partners,” processing as many as 500 prayer requests a day.

"It’s all pre-programmed choices that I had on my computer,” the ex-employee told me. “When someone wanted a prayer for their mother’s arthritis, I could make the choice – mother and arthritis. And when the letter would go to where it was generated … the computer knew where to put, 'We’re praying for your mother’s arthritis.'”

Only, the former employee says, that prayer was never uttered by Kenneth Copeland. Not one time. At least not in their presence: “Kenneth Copeland never sees a letter. He doesn’t know what these people think of him. People write letters and they write as if he’s their best friend. He never sees any of those letters.”

Instead, the thousands of pieces of mail that pour into the ministry every week, often accompanied by cash, money orders, stamps, checks, are brought into a vault area in tray upon tray and prayed over for a moment or two (“Thank you for these partners and, please, God, fill their needs”) by low-level employees.

“It’s a cold sophisticated system,” said the former employee. “And it became very impersonal.”

But now, it appears, it has become personal between a powerful U.S. Senator and defiant preacher with very deep pockets. And many, many people can’t wait to see what’s at the end of that road.

Try as hard as I can, I just cannot come up with any sympathy for those poor pathetic fools who fork over their money to these clowns. You just can''t fix stupid! But you can fleece it, and you can exploit it.
I would dearly love to see the tax advantages dissapear. We would find out real fast how many "good Christians" their really are.

I have been involved in this ministry for years, and they have made a very positive difference in my life. There is so much good that this ministry has done all over the world, but every news story CBS has done so far has shown an agenda and bias that could not be any more obvious. When did CBS become a tabloid? The things the "source" said who was afraid to reveal their identity showed their complete ignorance of that ministry. So they are basing the story on interviews with former disgruntled employees? This is an insult to CBS viewers'' intelligence and interest. I do not appreciate this type of totally biased and substandard "news coverage", and will no longer be tuning into CBS news.

Why don''t you report some real news instead of picking on a ministry that does a lot of good in the world and that truely helps others.

Why couldn''t you report about the good that ministry does instead of talking to 1 person from the mail department who has probably never once ever seen what really goes on in the ministry. Out of all the people you could have talked to in that ministry, you got to talk to someone in the mailroom?!!!!!

How about trying to talk to the Human Resources Department there or the CEO of the ministry?

Can''t you find other news to distort, like you usually do all the time, than picking on people who actually make a difference?!!!!!

So let me get this straight... Ron Paul got 3% of the Republican vote in Florida, therefore he gets 3% of the air-time in the national debate. What am I missing? Would anyone be so kind as to reply to my post & tell me a legitimate reason why Ron Paul does not deserve to have his voice heard equally with the other candidates. According to this line of reasoning, the vote count in the state of Florida is officially the rod by which the candidates are held up to measure for the rest of the country. People, is this not censorship to the nth degree?

Obama is no Bobby Kennedy inspite of what TED says, true they both wanted the same things but the difference lies somewhere in the middle, Bobby told the people how he intended on getting it done. All I''ve heard from Obama is what he dreams of having. Lets get real for just a minute, has he answered any hard questions?? like how he intends on getting all this done?? ( and I don''t want to hear a repeat of what Hillary has said) Ted thought we the people didn''t catch that remark he made. It''s easy to copy other people, but now lets hear what you have planned Mr Obama and how you intend on implimenting it?? and while your at it ask Ted Kennedy why he never ran for office???

I am simply bewildered by some of these comments. How can you think the ministry complied with the senate''s request? KC himself said that for a response "we gave a several page lesson on the word no." I hardly think CBS was picking on the poor, innocent ministry. I worked for the Copelands for 3 years and I can tell you that the report was accurate. As a matter of fact, I thought CBS went easy on them.

Why doesnt''t the secular media report on any of the good things that Kenneth Copeland has done over his 40 years of ministry. They are always trying to bring him down. Why don''t they report on all of the planes he has given to other ministries or all the people whom have learned to believe for their healing through his and sister Glorias'' teachings of the Word of God. I''ll tell you why because the secular media is apart of the world''s system. The Bible says we may be in the world, but we are not of the world. Satan is out to kill, steal, and to destroy and uses the media to try to put fear into folks. I''m not falling for his schemes and neither should you. Also haven''t you noticed the only people the media interviews are disgruntled employees? Any organization,no matter what, are going to have a few. You never see them interview joyful employees or partners.

I rather watch brian williams where the ratings are high, the news is more alive, and its balanced. not this B.S.

I disagree with you to some extent mufuart. Yes each ministry needs to follow policy and by-laws of non-profit laws. However, even still then by law they do not have to comply with Senator grassley requests when they feel his requests are unjust. Now the 15 or so religious leaders that have been targeted has complied with the senator''s requests, now this senator wants to attack on greater scale when they have already provided all infomation needed? when he knows *** well he can get this info from IRS himself. I would take this matter to court, or the IRS or senator grassley needs to get a summons requests, which means the confidential information given will not be exploited by the media like CBS or other news blogs.

Again I say this, If this minister has already complied with this senator request, and the senator is still hungry for more, then why can''t the senator pull thier IRS files and audits? It will be wise that these ministers don''t give this senator any more infromation with a IRS summons. That way this senator by law has to keep all information confidential. This Senator and CBS news is another example of under the table dirty politics.

I''m a bornagain Christian and I think any Christian ministry has a 100% obligation to be 100% transparent in its entire operation, no exceptions. Any attempt to "not meet with so and so when asked" only hurts the cause of Christ. No one is above the law.
