The Huckabee Puzzle

(CBS)
From CBS News' Joy Lin:

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA -- "I want to get something out of the way because there are some pretty crazy rumors going around that the Huckabee campaign is pulling out of Florida,” Mike Huckabee said as he looked out into a crowd of 250 enthusiastic supporters at a jet hangar here.

“Well, it doesn't look like it to me! And we're not!”

Florida is an expensive state to campaign in and Huckabee has never had a lot of money. Major media outlets are reporting Huckabee is out of play in this state even though he’s never explicitly said he is. The campaign is saying more events are planned in Florida following tomorrow night's Republican debate.

Huckabee later told reporters that he thinks journalists were drawing a false conclusion after learning the campaign would no longer make arrangements for a traveling press corps. He said it was “impractical” to have a press bus because of the “sheer size” of the state, and there were too many empty seats on the press plane. He did not address the matter of layoffs.

“Those news reports that our demise is imminent is much exaggerated,” Huckabee said.

Some have speculated Huckabee lost in South Carolina because he spent so much time in Michigan. Those same people think Huckabee is committing Feb. 5 suicide by spending so much time in Florida.

Posed with this theory, Huckabee disagreed that campaigning in Michigan contributed to his loss in South Carolina. He argued the campaign would have turned out a “10 point win” had the Club for Growth not dumped $750,000 of negative ads and had Fred Thompson not campaigned on a constant fury of anti-Huckabee attacks.

“Elections are all pieces of a much larger puzzle,” Huckabee continued. “I think a big thing people have to remember is that, unlike any election, this is going to come down to delegate count.”

Which is why the Huckabee double strategy of campaigning in Florida and winning delegate votes can be puzzling in this winner-take-all state.

On the other hand, if doing well in Florida is a matter of beating expectations, then it’s true expectations are very low. And there are few ways for members of the media to assess what his ground game is in the state.

Although Huckabee has been in Florida every day since Monday, he’s been holding mostly closed press events. This poses two scenarios – that nothing is going on and the campaign doesn’t want journalists to report about it. Or that something is happening and they don’t want the national media to know.

Challenged again about how he plans to win in Florida, Huckabee said, “If money were the reason that people got all the votes, we never would have won Iowa. We wouldn’t have placed well in New Hampshire and Michigan…We almost won South Carolina. We’ve been in contention in every state

“Some things that you may not see happening doesn’t mean that nothing is happening,” he continued. “We’re doing a lot of things with grassroots organizations that aren’t necessarily public events on the public calendar but there’s an enormous amount of activity going on behind the scenes and underground that will show up on Tuesday.

Huckabee also answered to opportunities posed by reporters to criticize his opponents.

Rejecting the suggestion Mitt Romney would be better fit to lead the U.S. through the economic downturn, Huckabee said, “ If one looks at [Romney’s] business career, it is largely dealing with a capital company that took companies, often broke them apart, people lost jobs, didn’t gain jobs. A lot of the money that was made within those companies ended up offshore. I’m not sure that that helps the American economy when you take people’s money and you put it in Cayman Island bank accounts...If that’s how we recover the America’s economy, I’m not sure how many Americans benefit out of that.”

Huckabee said, “Americans benefit when their government has policies that make it so people who are running small businesses and people who are working in jobs in factories keep those jobs.”

Asked about whether John McCain was right on campaign finance reform, Huckabee said McCain would have to address that for himself. He did go on to call campaign finance reform one of the “greatest disasters in this country.” He called the electoral process “not reformed but deformed.”

“If you’re extremely wealthy, you can write checks of tens of millions of dollars to your campaign and be credible – not because your ideas are resonating with people but because your checkbook is taken seriously at radio and television stations…But the fact is if you’re a campaign like ours, you’re limited to people who can only give you up to $2,300 per person”

He continued, “The other thing that has really made the system horrible is this proliferation of people who, then they can only give a certain amount of money to a candidate, then they funnel the money into Washington special interest groups, 527s…the really nasty stuff and do it anonymously. That is not real election reform at all

On receiving former presidential candidate Duncan Hunter’s endorsement, Huckabee said, “nobody is going to be able to say I’m not a true conservative. Duncan Hunter is a conservative’s conservative.”

Asked about the debate tomorrow, Huckabee said his “plan” is to stay positive and “simply go in and try to get as many questions answered as I can. I’ve got a record I can be very proud to run on. I think I’ve got a platform I can be proud to present to the American people as a most viable platform to be President of the United States.”

I was so angry when Hannity told 15 million listeners Huckabee was pulling out of Florida. Even with Floridians trying to get through and get on the air to correct this, he kept repeating that mantra.

One of the tactics of the NeoLib establishment is to marginalize this candidate as an "Evangelical" or as a "Baptist Preacher" to which I suggest they visit fairtax.org to see the kind of people who support him on taxes or www.catholic.org to see how some Catholics view him.

When word got out that he spent more time as a media owner, Lt. Governor and Governor than he did as a Baptist Preacher, the NeoLibs had to take to outright falsehood -- his campaign is diminishing, don''t vote for him because he''s bailing on Florida, etc.

Rush and Hannity need to know that we live in the age of the AlGoreBahn and facts can be checked. Within minutes of Hanity''s first pronouncement that Huckabee had pulled out of Florida, people who were at the rally posted on blogs and Meetup groups... and even on Huckabee''s Web site that they were at the rally. The Internet is doing to talk radio what talk radio did to the Old Media years ago. Democratization of the information process.... Worst nightmare of the Establishment.

Missouri for Mike Huckabee!! The Missouri Pro-Life Organization is meeting in Springfield at this moment to endorse Mike Huckabee for President. We are so excited about his platform and how well he articulates it. What consistency he has shown!! He truly lives his faith and it is obvious that his beliefs are deeply rooted.

After the debate last night in Boca Raton, FL, I am convinced more than ever that he is fully qualified to lead America into the future. Both our little ones and the elderly will be better protected with him at the helm. Go Mike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pbgiv,
what has not been well thought out by the fair tax proponents in the research I have done, is how you implement it without disrupting the economy. I don''t argue with the idea that it would be more efficient without the large IRS beauraucracy, but the economy is extremely complex, and I don''t think a 23 or 30% tax would be absorbed very quickly. There would also be a lot of potential for abuse, just like there is with the current system. The whole process of determining who is indigent enough to warrant a pre-emptive rebate (prebate) check is inefficient, though less so than the IRS, welfare, etc. combined. It would be much more efficient to make essential items like groceries tax free.

Praying, believing God is who he says he is and he can do what he says he can do and according to his Holy Word in Ephesians 3:20-21; Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church(the body not the building) by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. Believing God is raising up Mike as his/our Gideon.
If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then God will hear from Heaven, forgive our sin and heal our land. May God bring this nation to it''s knees, repenting, broken for the sins of this nation. I pray from Victory because Jesus Christ has already defeated this enemy at the cross with his shed blood and he rose from the dead and now sits at the right hand of the Father. Lord Jesus we stand in the gap for this country and it''s people, believing you wish none should perish but all to come to repentance.
May today be the day of Salvation for every soul that does not yet know you as Lord and Saviour of their heart and life. I pray for those who do know you as Lord and Saviour of their heart and of their life that our every thought, word and deed would bring you infinte worship, thanks, praise honor and glory every second of every minute of every hour of every day!! To God be all the Glory.

Punsalot -
The FairTax is the most thoroughly research tax plan in history and has multiple more co-sponsors and support in Congress than all other tax plans combined. Many opponents of it even agree it would increase our GDP 10% in the first year alone. I strongly suggest you go read an unbiased, balanced and thorough Wikipedia article on it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FairTax
The only reasons someone wouldn''t support it is 1) they haven''t researched or don''t fully understand it, 2) they''ve been mislead/deceived about it or 3) they have a vested interest in some form of the current system. Period.

Todd,
You''re very welcome and "Thank you, too". It''s rare and refreshing to actually get a courteous response on comment section of a news story like this. I really appreciate it. I think that our nation really needs to take the "Vertical Politics" message to heart (myself included). Anyway, Thanks!

Behind closed doors and underground? What is Huckabee talking about?"

Todd,
What he''s talking about is those of us who are part of Huck''s Army. We''re a massive grassroots organization who are helping each other to help Huck to get to Washington. He would be a fantastic leader for our nation. If you look into him, you''ll find that he''s been misrepresented by corporate elitist who are absolutely scared to death of Mike Huckabee''s support of the Fair Tax, which will cause them to lose their loopholes (of our unfair tax code), which they paid for through Washington, D.C. lobbyists. Think about the fact that there are 35,000 lobbyists in Washington, D.C. and yet there are only 435 Congressmen in the House and only 100 Senators. That''s a ratio of 70 Washington, D.C. lobbyist for every 1 legislator that we actually elect!

Mike Huckabee is a statesman who will be the President of "WE THE PEOPLE", not just the President of the highest bidder!

I am so impressed with this guy. I was surprised to discover that he hasn''t been a pastor for more than twelve years -- he''s actually been governor of Arkansas, taking them from the Third World disaster Clinton and Tucker left behind to an enviable state where the education system went from 49th to 8th and where the decaying infrastructure was modenized... All of that and $800 million dollar surplus when he left office.

Reports that he is still a pastor are also greatly exaggerated. If all he amounted to was an Evangelical hayseed, he wouldn''t have the support of Fair Taxers and immigration activists.

If I hadn''t visited his site, www.mikehuckabe.com -- and then verified his claims with news reports, Wikipedia, etc. I would have written him off long ago.

I''m so glad I didn''t believe Rush or Sean Hannity (who is still reporting that Huckabee left Florida even as a huge rally is taking place).

Mike Huckabee is a decent, honest man who connects with millions of people of all denominations, race and creed. He is the only candidate, I believe, who can lead us from the "brink" and rescue our country from those who have set our country on a "self destruct" mode. Mike is not a (monetarily) rich man, but he IS rich in character with high values/morals. He doesn''t waver or waffle on his beliefs. He has not spent decades in the Congress doing little. He has been given highest honors as a governor and has been praised and endorsed by some of this country''s most notable, outstanding black AND white religious figures. I am a high school teacher and I can say that our young people are in need for a leader who can guide and lead; one with a gift for communicating to all segments of our society. We need MIKE HUCKABEE!

Please.....Mitt Romney doesn''t represent middle America! He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He''s as far away from the "middle America" as he can be! He''ll use all his money to buy the presidency.
Andrew Sum, a Northeastern University economist, researched Romney''s record. Massachusetts lagged in the U.S. average during 2003-2007 (Romney''s SINGLE term as governor), in job creation, economic growth and wage increases. "As a strict labor market economist looking at the record, Massachusetts did very poorly during the Romney years. On every measure you''ve got, the state was a substantial under-performer." Don''t be swayed and romanced by slick and flip-flopping Mr. Romney. He spouts "change" alright...he changes his stance every time it benefits him!
Vote for MIKE HUCKABEE!

I am a 45 year old maried man with three daughters. I have never gotten involved in an political campain before. The very first time my wife and I saw Mike in a debate we knew that we had to get behind him. He is clearly what this country needs to become great once again. We can''t understand how people can look at his remarkable record as governor of Arkansas, know where he stands on many issues and still not agree that he is the best man for the job and the best man to go up against the Clintons. My family who is not very religious sais a prayer for Mike at dinner every night. Let''s hope God is listening!

"Mike Huckabee has more character in his little finger than the other candidates do in their whole bodies. He also has at least 20 IQ points above any of the other candidates."

Yes and he walks on water too!!!
If you''re going to build up your candidate at least be truthful. Yes Huckabee is a character, but he is not that bright, and if you think so, neither are you. Yes, he can communicate, when he''s not trying to be evasive, but he says some really stupid things. It''s not just slip of the tongue, like McLiberal''s "President Putin of Germany" reference. His comments have displayed gross ignorance on world matters, and the fair tax proposal which he borrowed from someone else is not well thought out.

Huckabee is a character, but he is no intellectual, and those of you who think he is aren''t too bright either. Yes, he''s a great communicator, but he''s sure said a lot of stupid things, and they weren''t just slip of the tongue mistakes. They were obvious displays of ignorance.

This is a blatant effort by the big corporate media to elect their favorite candidate: Mitt "flip-flop" Romney. After all that''s how we ended up with an ex-alcoholic named George W. Bush, in spite of his seriously flawed record. After all who is asking the questions at most of these debates: isn''t it the big corporate media?

A victory by Mike Huckabee is another nail in the coffin of the "conservative" establishment that wants to anoint their hand-picked candidates. It''s time the average Joes in America tell Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, et al, that we have minds of our own!

Thank you Duncan Hunter. There has been a lot of nonsense going around about Mike Huckabee ever since he had the audacity to defend John McCain''s patriotism.

Ever since then there have been people trying to lump Huckabee in with McCain and call him a liberal. Duncan Hunter has set the record straight.

Mike Huckabee is the most conservative candidate running, socially, economically, or otherwise.

Mike Huckabee never had sanctuary cities in his state of Arkansas (where he was overwhelmingly re-elected twice!), he opposes drivers licenses for illegals, he had nothing to do with McCain''s amnesty bill, and he was the first Republican candidate to commit to seal the border and never support amnesty.

In the eleven years Huckabee was governor of Arkansas, the tax rate never went up. He raised some taxes and cut many other taxes, and in the process took Arkansas schools from the bottom of the list to the top and made their roads the best in the country.

In short, he was a great governor. Mitt Romney could not get re-elected. So much for successes. And John McCain has never governed a state.

I will vote for Mike Huckabee on Feb. 5th, and all Republicans should seriously consider his cadidacy before the Florida Primary.
