Huckabee Campaign Slims Down, Stays in Florida

(CBS)
From CBS News' Joy Lin:

IN THE AIR BETWEEN ORLANDO, FLA. AND ATLANTA -- “We have a lot of empty seats right now,” Mike Huckabee told reporters last night, who had just learned the campaign would no longer be arranging charter flights for the media. Only about 15 of 50 seats were occupied – including Huckabee and his staff. A few news outlets had pulled their journalists while many staffers had dropped off to seed support in Florida and Georgia.

Huckabee said the campaign’s “frugality” has allowed it to be “pretty nimble.” Next to him sat his daughter Sarah, whose official title is national field director, but was at that moment serving as assistant and press secretary.

“We ran a very, very lean operation for a long time…We really need to conserve as much as we can for the media,” Huckabee told reporters on their last forseeable airplane trip together.

“We don't have enough, really, people to have field staff all over the states. It's not realistic. So what we'll do is put a leaner team together, we'll save every bit of money”

These days, the campaign is tightening the financial waistband not just to pick up delegates, but to play in Florida. Returning from closed press meetings in the state, Huckabee told reporters the campaign had only expect about 20 people at one event but found “over 200.”

“Right now, our plan is to play ball in Florida,” he said. “We think we can play here. Obviously every single day is a new day for the campaign, especially since it is as fluid as it is. If we got to Friday, and it looked like, no matter what we do, we’re not going to best fourth – I don’t think that’s going to happen, but I think, who knows – we just have to look at the dynamics everyday. Because it’s a winner take all state, we want to go here, but somebody takes it all. There are more delegates in Georgia than there are in Florida.”

Huckabee is returning to Florida every day until the debate on Thursday for events and fundraisers while splitting off some time to campaign in Georgia as well.

On the one hand, Huckabee said, “We don’t want to wait until the very last week to get into a lot of these key states. Georgia, Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma. All of those are February 5th states…We need to do some groundwork, and that’s why we’re trying to discern just what we can get done."

On the other hand, Huckabee said they have had “leads” in Florida when there was no reason for polling well in the state: “We thought, we don’t have a single staff person, we don’t have a field operation here, we’re not running any TV or radio, and we are leading in the polls.”

Maybe he's not leading in the polls anymore, but Huckabee seems to be holding out for the hidden returns of his unconventionally decentralized campaign. Huckabee said reports of self-starting MeetUp groups all over the country have had him “in awe.”

“While we have our own organization and we’re doing our part, there are people acting as free agents out there that are just doing amazing things and organizing states where we don’t’ have a soul," he said.

Huckabee dismissed rumors he was considering being McCain’s vice president:“If you ever start thinking about what’s your fall back position,” said Huckabee. “That will become your goal.”

When told John McCain said Chuck Norris should have his mouth washed out for calling him too old, Huckabee smiled and said, “Look, I don’t mess with Chuck Norris, okay?”

If Fred Thompson''s operatives had not engaged in dirty politics in SC, engaging in push polling and claiming to be paid by Mike Huckabee, the winner in SC would have been Huckabee. Thompson was the darling of the conservative media, but had no message except maintenance of the corrupt status quo.

The voters of both parties need to understand that those conservative media represent everything the Founding Fathers fought AGAINST; that is, exploitation of the many by the wealthy few! The people can honor them and America by banding together to support Mike Huckabee''s noble campaign for the Presidency.

Huckabe%u2019s fair-tax is an economy buster. All the people just above poverty level and the middle class Americans will shoulder all the taxes of this country. The rich will be soooooo happy to pay next to nothing. Then the poor and the middle class will start cutting spending so they don''t go bankrupt and then no one will buy anything and we will not just have a recession but a huge depression greater than the ''great depression''. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. What a "Christian". Either he is a terrible person who hates poor people or he is completely ignorant of how an economy works. I think it is the latter. He does seem nice, but nice doesn''t keep the world%u2019s #1 economy working. Vote on issues not on who is ''nice''.

Mike Huckabee won hands down in South Carolina as far as I am concerned. We watch Governor Huckabee do such an amazing job with so little money!

The so called top candidates have sunk millions in an attempt to de-rail Governor Huckabee.

What does Huckabee do? Cuts back and saves money to apply it to a better battle! Mike Huckabee is a genius at doing at lot with a little. Image what he will do if he has the chance to fix our economy!

Romney had sunk over 100 million in trying to win. It is about winning. What would happen if Romney spends like this as President?

Governor Huckabee changed Arkansas school rating from one of the lowest to one of the highest in Nation. Governor Huckabee rebuilt Ark. roads and left the State in Billion dollar surplus! Was multiple term Governor. Time magazine said top 5 Governor in America.

(don''t believe the anti-Huckabee media garbage paid for by the dirty rich who want Romney in power)

We need Governor Huckabee in America today!

I would implore all the religious zealots to consider why would you vote for a man who wants to war with a country that never caused the US any harm.
We do not need to be in Iraq any longer - we already have our honor. We defeated Saddam Hussein in about 3 weeks and after 6 months we had killed his 2 sons and captured Saddam.
Our military is not a police force.

Mike Huckabee is a hypocrit - preaching love but hating homosexuals. Should we care what people do in their own homes?

Also - are you all fooled by the fact that he let''s Chuck Norris be his hit man? that is disrespectful. I detestSen McCain since he is no conservative but i wouldn''t be two-faced like Mike and have my boy Chuck make fun of him.

You should all go to confession!

I am not a religious zealot.

Of the 55 men who formed our Constitution, 52 were active members of their church. I don''t think they were religious zealots either.

I am however a US Marine! And I assure you that we want to finish the job. It is necessary for the protection of our Iraqi allies as well as the future peace of this world. You are wrong soldier, that country did make harm to ours. We didn''t start it, but we should finish it. We owe it to everyone to make good on our promises.

Governor Huckabee does not hate anyone. He does not want to give special rights to any group or to expand the current definition of marriage being 1 man 1 woman.

Governor Huckabee wants to stop the execution of billions of human babies in America. So do I. There is no excuse for that.

I stand behind Governor Mike Huckabee.

Fred The Loser has played the role to perfection. He split the conservative and Value based votes from Huck so that his Pal Mccain can win in SC. Now the job is done, he is simply quitting the race as predicted by Ed Rollins and others.

But the battle is not over yet. Huck will bounce back and will teach lesson to those who want to steal or buy nomination.

There is still a real conservative left in the race for the GOP nomination. And there is only one viable candidate left who is trustworthy on pro-life & moral issues and has a proven trackrecord of appointing good judges - that''s Mike Huckabee.

Today he made a fantastic statement about Roe v. Wade -
http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Blogs.View&Blog_id=1236

Ask yourself - if he is such an economic liberal, how come he''s managed to hit the top tier with a mere fraction of the money of the others and refuses to go into debt? What is liberal about believing in subsidiarity - a very Christian prinicple that says that the most effective way of getting something done is at the level closest to the problem?

Why is it weak to suggest that we find ways to better work with our allies rather than telling them it''s all or nothing they''re for us or against us? What is clueless about believing that you cannot reason with or negotiate with the islamic fanatics - they must be eliminated & their breeding grounds rendered sterile?

Too many people have bought into the political propaganda of the well heeled opposition - please consider (or reconsider) Huckabee - take a look at mikehuckabee.com and hucksarmy.com while there is still a chance for us to have a truly pro-life conservative president!!

niqueie, apparently you don''t really understand the fair tax. The poor will receive in a rebate all of the taxes that they paid. The reduction of costs to businesses will end lowering the price overall to everyone and spur productivity.

Mike Huckabee truly understands that one man%u2019s floor is another man%u2019s ceiling. Mike Huckabee is nowhere near the campaign floor that he came from.

Go Huckabee, ALL THE WAY!

Gov. Huckabee''''s advocacy of the FairTax ( http://snipr.com/irsgone ) is the single most important policy position in this election. Research findings explain why:

The FairTax rate of 23 percent on a total taxable consumption base of $11.244 trillion will generate $2.586 trillion dollars %u2013 $358 billion more than the taxes it replaces ( http://snipurl.com/whatratewks ). [BHKPT]

The FairTax has the broadest base and the lowest rate of any single-rate tax reform plan ( http://snipurl.com/baserate ). [THBP]

Real wages are 10.3 percent, 9.5 percent, and 9.2 percent higher in years 1, 10, and 25, respectively than would otherwise be the case ( http://snipurl.com/realwages ). [THBNP]

The economy as measured by GDP is 2.4 percent higher in the first year and 11.3 percent higher by the 10th year than it would otherwise be ( http://snipurl.com/econbenes ). [ALM]

Over time, the FairTax benefits all income groups. Of 42 household types (classified by income, marital status, age), all have lower average remaining lifetime tax rates under the FairTax than they would experience under the current tax system ( http://snipurl.com/kotcomparetaxrates ). [KR]

Based on standard measures of tax burden, the FairTax is more progressive than the individual income tax, payroll tax, and the corporate income tax ( http://snipurl.com/lessregress ). [THBPN]
