Huckabee Responds to Anonymous Mailings

(CBS)
From CBS News' Joy Lin:

GRINNELL, IOWA -- Mike Huckabee weighed in today about anonymous mailings received by Iowa pastors supporting Huckabee. The letters warn the IRS might penalize their churches for political involvement and became a topic of conversation during a conference call yesterday.

“I know there is some real – just frankly – anger among pastors across the state,” said Huckabee, in response to a question from CBS News correspondent Nancy Cordes.

“They feel like this is one of the most underhanded things they’ve ever seen. To try and trick people in their first amendment rights for speaking up. It’s a form of voter suppression ... I don’ t know where it’s coming from. I’m not even going to venture a guess.”

He said he would let his national campaign chair Ed Rollins and campaign director Chip Saltsman handle the situation.

Countering reports that he didn’t know he would be crossing picket lines to go on the Tonight Show, Huckabee went on Fox saying he saying he had seen a document which showed there was an agreement between the Writer’s Guild and the show.

At the press conference Huckabee explained, “The fact is we talked to the Leno people and they had an agreement with the president of the Writer’s Guild that they were not going to bring replacement writers in. And that the strike is really against the producers and the network, not against Jay Leno. What Jay Leno did was put 160 people back to work and made sure they had a living. But they didn’t bring in replacement writers, so they weren’t violating that part of it. I support the writers. I think they are right on this issue and still do.”

Huckabee has been accused for failing to know the news of the day – including the writer’s strike, the National Intelligence Estimate report on Iran, and the latest situation in Pakistan. Asked whether this was a matter of concern for voters, Huckabee replied, “It’s not a matter of not knowing, it’s a matter of how people want to interpret it. And come to view different events that are taking place.”

“I think I am more than aware of things that are important ... there are a lot of people in Iowa who want a president that is concerned about them, concerned about their job losses, concerned about the future,” he said.

If the campaign is a marathon, Huckabee said today, then this is the halfway point. Huckabee said he believed the “gut check” today would “prove we can run the whole 26.2 mile distance.”

As if to sympathize with the journalists, Huckabee said he realized “some of you start chasing me from early in the morning ‘til late at night, and you still have to file your stories.”

“So we’ve decided that, so long as we can keep the energy, hopefully you can. And when then the stories get nasty, we’ll try to stay up later and kill all of you,” he joked.

I want to congradulate Huckabee for his win and I want to take the high road and be positive. But I were to go negative I would say his son is a over weight Dog killer, and Gov. Huckabee thinks everyone thats not Born again and Baptist is going to a place that rhimes with SWELL. That includes Catholics, Jews, Buddists, Hindu''''s, Muslims, Mormons, 7th day adeventists, JW.. And he wants to be the man of people.

His open borders tutions for illegals and tax policy are flawed to put in mildly.... But I really would never be negative towards, other then to say he also needs a good dentist.

Vote for Jimmy Carter, I mean Huckabee. !!

Congratulations Mike!

Mike Huckabee made political history today. Being outspent 20 to 1 and with every news organization in the world twisting the truth about him they couldnt fool the American people.

Mike Huckabee is a great role model for society. He has so much integrity, honesty, humbleness, charisma and good sense of humor.

Mike Huckabee is taking American to higher ground with a new American spirit. One that stops the squabbling and bickering from left to right to one that leads the country up.

This truly was the David and Goliath story. Mike Huckabee took out his sling shot with a small stone in it and knocked down the giant Romeny. Crash!!! You can hear the earth shake with the aftershocks of the giant falling.

Mike Huckabee doesnt just beat Romney he totally crushes him in the poll results.

The American public learned another thing tonight too. It''''s a big waste of time listening to the political pundits out there that claim to be experts in talking about politics.

Americans will now turn them off, stop listening and reading the phony messages they send out. They will now start listening and reading from those sources that hit the bulls-eye about Mike''''s win.

The winners: The American people and Mike Huckabee

The losers: Romney, Thompson who lost million of dollars and the political pundits and news media that try to spin lies.

Baptists make up 20% of the population. Evangelicals in general make up 50% or so? Mormons are 2% of the population. THAT IS WHY MITT NEEDED ALOT OF MONEY TO BE A CONTENDER! Considering the SBC''s anti-Mormon sunday school ciriculum for the last 40 years. It''s miraculous that Mitt is in the race at all no matter how much money!

It''s a true problem if tax-exempt churches are using their paid clergy, buildings, or buses to endorse a political candidate. That''s not free speech; that''s breaking the law around tax-exempt status! Mormon Church''s to not even mention Mitts name, much less endorse him.

Huckabee showed true nastiness by trying to trick the press into an attack on Romney while saying the opposite. It is wierd that he thinks that''s normal.. to be duplicitous.
Romney is the real leader. Huckabee can only offer a shared disdain for Mormons amongst evangelicals. He was the keynote speaker at the SBC''s 1998 convention where they handed out anti-Mormon literature about Satan being Jesus'' brother. Huckabee is the ultimate pretender.

America was founded with Christian underpinnings and Judeo-Christian roots. Older people remember when there was respect for family, community, and country. They have seen changes in this culture that threaten to destroy what made America great. These changes have involve the triumph of the capitalism without conscience, resulting in the law of the jungle in which the few get richer while most get poorer. The people of this nation will not stand by any longer while corporate greed, manifested every day in the obscenely corrupt media, disregards any pretense of fair reporting. Mike Huckabee is a symbol of the power that is in the people that are going to take back our country. When that day comes, I would advise the media pundits who did everything possible to destroy him to leave the country.

So the Evangelicals pick on of their own - what''s new? They don''t care about his record or the fact that he was investigated 14 times for ethics violations and cited for 5. Mike Huckabee was governor of Arkansas, he plays a musical instrument, he plays dirty and he was born in Hope. He makes sleezy statements to magazines (apologizing after) and cries foul when he gets caught...I''ll bet he''s even unclear as to what the definition of is is! Mitt Romney has no ethics violations, his kids haven''t strangled any animals, he has experience in both the private sector and in politics. He ran ads that contrasted his record with Hucks - nothing wrong or dishonest about that. He has two strikes - first, he''s Mormon and the evangelicals "fear" Mormons because their pastors tell them to. Second, the anti rich sentiment is strong (and ridiculous). He worked hard and he made a good living but people hate him for it - it''s sickening. If it comes down to Hillary or Huckabee - I''m going for Hillary. Bill had his chance and Huckabee is a newer version of him - maybe she could surprise me.

huckabee will not be our next president and that''s all there is to it. If he was such a great pick, then why doesn''t he have more support and hasn''t raised more money for his campaign? If he weren''t a baptist preacher, he''d lose half his support. Great guy but people can really see who this smooth talking Christian really is.....by their fruits you shall know them. Check out his some of his fruits....http://www.huckabeefacts.org/

It''s obvious where the threatening letters came from.

A dirt wealthy candidate is using mob tactics to try and scare American citizens. Enough is enough as said before.

You cannot win Romney. You have shown America who you really are. America is a place for freedom and democracy. I wouldn''t vote for you if you were running for the Iowa corn shucking president, you thug.

I have known Mike Huckabee for over 20 years-first as my pastor, then as my Governor, and now as a candidate for President of The United States. Through all of this he has remained consistent in his beliefs. The fact that his favorite hymn is "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" speaks volumes about the man. God bless him.

Gotta love this guy''s transparency and honesty. The media view Huckabee''s "moves" with cynicism but that''s because they don''t understand that a person can truly wish to do the right thing even when the natural impulse is to strike back. Keep it positive Mr. Huckabee. You did the right thing.
