Huckabee's Morning Run

(CBS/John Filo)
From CBS News Correspondent Nancy Cordes, who's covering the Huckabee campaign:

DES MOINES, IOWA -- Mike Huckabee has won the photo op battle of the day, and it's only 8am. He went for a jog around Gray's Lake in Des Moines flanked by some local doctors, and because he invited the press, there were about 30 cameras capturing every sprightly step.

Huckabee hopped off his campaign bus here at dawn, wearing a bright orange parka, black running pants, and -- function before fashion -- a mask covering his ears and chin for warmth.

It is freezing out here. He invited members of the media to come along. There were no takers.

Just as he was about to embark on his run, a jogger came up to him and said he was leaning towards voting for him but wanted to know his views about rehabilitating prisoners (he runs a halfway house). Huckabee launched into a three minute explanation of his view that "people who are dangerous" should be locked up, but "people we're just mad at" should be rehabilitated if possible. The jogger liked his answer, said Huckabee had his vote, and headed off on his run. After asking about ice on the path, Huckabee set out too.

He went about 2 or 3 miles, keeping up his training for the Boston Marathon during the hectic campaign season. He said his training regimen has suffered a bit lately. I asked him what his goal time was for Boston. He replied, "before Tuesday."

Huckabee got a zinger in at the end of the run, as the press surrounded him the second he finished. One reporter asked who would win in a footrace -- him, or his rival Mitt Romney. "Get him out here!" Huckabee challenged, adding, "though he'd be running both ways the whole time."

Mike Huckabee is an inspiration to all runners. So many struggle with their weight and their deflating willpower to keep it off.

Mike Huckabee''s drive to live in a positive uplifting way fuels his energy in so many ways. A man who lost over 100 pounds and kept it off. Top it off with 4 yes, that''s right 4 marathons!

Mike has the Boston and the New York City Marathon coming up too. This guy is at the top of his game.

After Mike Huckabee becomes president I wouldnt be surprised if he sets his goal on breaking the World record in the Marathon at 2:05 which the African runners have dominated in the last years since Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter''s success in the 80''s.

Mike Huckabee is a great role model for society. Leading a postive, uplifting, honest, humble and trustworthy live. I really admire this guy a lot!

I do not know who would win in a foot-race, but I do beleive that Romney is going to win the political "foot-race" in Iowa.

The reason I believe this is because both Romney and Huckabee have the same values, but Romney has a prove track recrd of success in the private sector as well as the public sector.

Actually, after thinking about it. I believe that Romney would win an actual foot race against Huck. Romney has more energy than I have every seen in an individual.

Mitt Will Win Iowa, Romney has too impressive of a track record in changing around broken businesses for us to deny it.

I Enthusiastically endorse Romney for President.

Slick Huck is just like Slick Willie and that their both from Hope, Arkansas and the Fact that they both have a hard time telling the truth.

Olde "tax hike mike" is running from a horrible record in Arkansas.

Let''s hope folks don''t fall into the same slick smooth talking Huck as we did with Slick Willie 15 year ago.

paf715 "...Romney and Huckabee have the same values".
Romney has whatever values are politically expedient. His views are all over the place, and he''s loose with his facts. Huckabee is 100% true to his convictions. There is no question where he stands on values.

Gov Huckabee has a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. I can''t wait to see him interact with the press corps as President.

Let''s look at the Huckabee record...liberal on illegal immigration and fiscal policy and clueless on foreign policy. Huckabee is a disaster!

Going on fun outings and transcribing what others say are about the only things the MSM knows how to do. If anyone in Iowa is reading this, please go to one of Huck''s appearances, ask him real (non-MSM) questions about his policies, and then upload his response to video sharing sites. We need to do the reporting the MSM refuses to do.

For instance, ask him about the glaring gaps in this plan:

Go hukster! GOOO! Bring on the negative, and the more Mike gets to show his charm! A liberal republican, Sure to draw some of us Democrats over! Like myself. So he wants to rehabilitate criminals... So what he pardoned some guys who let us down! at least he is trying to solve the problem not put bars over it as an excuse to not tackle the issue! Romney is an idiot and if you are talking about all the things Mike has done wrong as justification for Mitt! YOU LOSE!

Oh and... As for Slick Huck! That in itself is an idiotic claim. Bill Clinton presided over the Best of Times for America. And no he did not Inherit Bush sr. Good decisions and No the surplus he left wasnt the begining of a recession as you republicans like to spin. Maybe there is something in the water in Arkansas? HOPE maybe! Something republicans have none! Well some! I mean come on guys you want a Mitt OR Rudy but then hack on Mike! You%u2019re losing your Minds there! Seems like Hannity likes Mike!

For two months, Mike Huckabee has dealt with numerous challenges - mostly rehashed trash, drudged up or created long ago by the Arkansas Democratic machine opposing his campaigns there. To "lonewacko": his answers to Tim Russert''s 30 minute barrage are on YouTube if you care to watch. I wonder how many voters dismiss Mike Huckabee with a worn-out label or platitudes of political pundits because they don''t want to hear him for themselves. Are you afraid you might find him to be the candidate America really needs?

Mike Huckabee has momentum because average Republicans all over the nation have heard him and enthusiastically support him. His views on the issues and his vision for America and his effective leadership compare very favorably with any other candidate. Yes he talks well but he proved to be an effective leader - even with a hostile legislature in a Democratic state.

Check out Mike Huckabee for yourself at huckconnects -.- wordpress -.- com/ .... if you dare. The interviews with the News Hour on 10/5/07 or Glenn Beck on 10/19/07 or Charlie Rose on 11/1/07 actually focused on the issues more than the critics.

highrunner11: if Huck "answered" Russert''s questions on immigration that''s only because Russert is a lightweight on this issue. Someone who''s familiar with this issue and with Huck''s statements could easily show that Huck isn''t qualified for office.

And, that''s even leaving aside the fact that as governor Huck collaborated with a foreign government in a scheme that encouraged illegal immigration.

The dollar slid across the board on Friday as data showing a 9 percent decline in sales of new U.S. homes last month heightened concern about the economy, putting the greenback on track for its worst week in more than a year.
The housing report, which was weaker than economists had expected, also bolstered the case for more Federal Reserve interest rate cuts in 2008. Earlier this week, the S&P/Case-Shiller index showed a record decline in U.S. home prices in October.

This is what''s happening to YOUR house. All the ''money'' and ''equity'' you thought you had saved - eliminated! The equity through falling house prices - and the money because we are DEBASING OUR CURRENCY. That low fed rate you''re reading about gets created by printing money and lending it to people. With more money, the money YOU have is worth LESS. So your money is worth less and your property is worth less - where can you turn to keep ahead of inflation? I think you BETTER turn to Dr. Paul. He''s the ONLY one running that has a HOPE of being able to deal with this.

Uhh to date I have not heard or seen anyone do anything or propose a solution to immigration in America! To suggest Mike Huckabee hasn%u2019t the capacity to deal with this problem makes him perfect for the job then! Everyone in Washington and everyone in America grapples with this issue! And no one that I know has a solution! So we build a fence! A Fence?? Another boilerplate solution to a ticking time bomb! That%u2019s all American Democrats and republicans at their best!

Pastor Huckabee has smote his enemies wherever he goes. He has the full support of Evangelicals the world over. He was anointed by the Leadership to take on Goliath. He will smite the Goliath Romney on election day. He will smite the wayward nations who refuse to listen to his powerful word. With his mighty arm he will crush the countries who refuse to listen and bring them to their knees. He will be one of the greatest Christian presidents - perhaps as great as Jimmy Carter. Onward soldiers and lead the way to bring Pastor Huckabee a great victory today! Let him smite his enemies with a mighty blow! Oh, how happy everyone will be when President Huckabee puts Christ back into America!

One hopes that the Huckabee campaign will counter Romney attacks by pointing out how, at Bain Capital, Mr. Romney used offshore corporations to avoid U.S. taxation, and he fee-milked acquired businesses before firing workers and taking them into bankruptcy ( http://snipr.com/romneyoffshore ), to amass his great $250,000,000 wealth.

So, when you compare how Mr. Huckabee''s visionary FairTax advocacy ( http://snipr.com/nextrung ) compares to Romney''s interest in the current tax system, it''s pretty easy to see who will lead us out of tax slavery ( http://snipr.com/taxburden ) - $265 billion annual tax code compliance costs representing 5 billion wasted hours, annually.
