Romney Slams Huckabee, Defends Bush’s Foreign Policy

From CBS News' Scott Conroy

HUMBOLDT, Iowa Mitt Romney ripped into Iowa frontrunner Mike Huckabee at a town hall in Humboldt, Iowa, this morning over an article Huckabee penned in the current issue of the journal Foreign Affairs. In the article, the former Arkansas governor accused the Bush administration of having an “arrogant bunker mentality” on the world stage.

“I said, 'Did this come from Barack Obama? Or from Hillary Clinton? Did it come from John Edwards?” Romney told the crowd of about 100 people. “No, it was one of our own. It was Governor Huckabee.”

At a press conference following the event, Romney went into further depth in criticizing Huckabee’s piece, seeming to imply that Huckabee does not have the depth of knowledge on foreign policy required to become commander-in-chief.

“I was disappointed in the quality of the thinking and the quality of the recommendations there,” Romney said.

The Romney campaign sent out a press release to reporters entitled “NO LAUGHING MATTER: Huckabee’s Playground diplomacy,” which mocked some of Huckabee’s past statements on diplomacy and noted what was perhaps an ill-advised quip Huckabee made a couple of weeks ago during a radio interview when he said, “I may not be the expert that some people are on foreign policy, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night."

Governor Romney said that while Mr. Bush’s foreign policy has not been perfect, especially in some of the handling of the Iraq war, the president should be commended, rather than criticized by fellow Republicans.

"So we ought to be saying thank you to the president for keeping us safe these last six years,” Romney said. “And I'm the last person to say that this administration has suffered through an arrogant bunker mentality.”

"he''s as liberal as they come on taxes and immigration"?
Don''t tell that to the Minuteman Project currently protecting our border, who endorse Huckabee, and don''t tell that to Neil Boortz, radio personality who is a Libertarian and helped write the book on the FairTax.
You know people by the company they keep, and Mitt keeps company with Ted Kennedy and Mark Pryor, the Democrat Senator who was pleased to see Mitt support his troop withdrawal plan.

Huckabee reminds me of Jimmy Carter. He relates very well to people, but has not demonstrated that he can manage his way out of a paper bag, let alone manage the Presidency. Who among the great managers and scholars in the country would want to work for him, be his secretary of commerce, for example? He would be a disaster. "Oh yeah, that guy''s been a Baptist Minister, and got his weight under control. He stayred at a Holiday Inn last night, I really want to work for him!"

Mike Huckabee is offically not getting my vote. The more I learn of him the less I like him. Turns out, he''s as liberal as they come on taxes and immigration. Also, I recently learned that he gave over 1000 commutations and pardons as Governor..including the pardon of 12 people convicted of murder. This guy may sound good but has a terrible record.

Huckabee never finished the seminary, so I can KINDA believe him when he said he didn''t know about Romney''s religion. Of course, comparative religion is a sort of low level class, but give him the credit for not being studious and drop it. He DOES believe in creationism, so at least he was awake PART of the time. I wonder how he does on other religions stuff. I know he got his Baptist girl friend Diane O''Connell a government job even though she had no experience. Cost Arkansas 1.6 million, so I guess he fails at not lying. Let''s see, he stole $60,000 out of the taxpayer fund so I guess he missed that class about not stealing. He tried to pay himself as a consultant in his own Senatorial election, so he missed that class on not cheating too. He opened a wedding registry at Target and Dillard''s while he was governor so his grateful subjects could buy him presents when he and his wife renewed their vows. Hm - guess he missed that class about not coveting his neighbor''s possessions too. Wait - maybe there''s a simpler explanation. Maybe the Huckster thinks YOU''RE stupid. After all, he DOES support the FairTax, which doesn''t tax corporations AT ALL, and millionaires and up at the same rate as someone who is near poverty level - i.e. less than 5%. Here''s the thing - religious people really ARE religious. Who among them wants any truck with THIS devil?

Huckabee is hopping on the Bush bashing bandwagon? All I can say is... thank God Al Gore wasn''t president when the attacks of 9/11 happened. Can you imagine the lack of resolve that would have ensued? Al-Queda would have been as strong as ever.

Also, did anyone else notice that Huckabee misspelled Al-Queda in his foreign policy "essay" ?
