Imess

(MSNBC)
Two weeks. That's how long CBS Radio and MSNBC have suspended Don Imus for his characterization of members of the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos."

The language in the CBS Radio announcement was interesting: "Due to the events of the past week, CBS Radio will suspend Don Imus and the broadcast of his show for a period of two weeks, effective Monday, April 16." Due to the events of the past week. You'll remember that Imus made his remarks last Wednesday; he apologized Friday, and likely hoped the controversy would die down over the weekend.

Instead, just the opposite happened – as Rachel Sklar points out, "the story continued to percolate," with a number of media outlets covering it over the weekend. Imus made one last effort at face saving with a visit to Al Sharpton's radio show, but he was unable to win Sharpton over or sway public opinion. And then, finally: Suspension. "Events of the past week" indeed.

One thing that has struck me about coverage of the Imus affair is the fact that media outlets, including the "Evening News," have had no problem repeating what Imus said. I'm all for that – his words are a central part of the story, and simply writing that Imus made derogatory remarks, without specifying what they were, doesn't give news consumers all the information.

But there does seem to be a double standard here: Remember the Danish cartoon controversy? Most US media outlets, including CBS News, declined to show the cartoons, despite the fact that they too were central to the story. "We could explain it, so we didn't need to show it," Linda Mason, CBS News senior vice president, standards and special projects, told us at the time. "Any rendering of Muhammad is an insult to Muslims, and desecration is even worse."

But "nappy headed hos" is an insult as well. So why allow that particular insult on the air but not the other?

I am angered by the defense that black rappers and comedians use the slur, "ho" so it is okay for Imus to use this term in reference to young college girls, young enough to be his daughters. Imus can not be compared to black rappers and comedians who use these terms in an artistic way to express their lives as minoritiess in an economically and educationally challenged community. He is a white man, which calls to mind the rape and degradation of black slave women by white male slave owners.

The lynching of Don Imus???

It seems to me that in society we all want standards to apply to everyone! I would think that is why so many people are outraged by the racist remarks of Imus. My question is, what is the standard here? Is MSNBC and sponcers combating racism with more racism? I think they are.

It is racist to lynch Imus and keep him from working. The man offered to make amends. He is willing to apologize and take a two week suspension. Still, it seems all that is not good enough.

Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton seem to want nothing less than to stand under the tree with the rope in hand that they want to use as a noose around Imus' neck! They are running around gaining the support of people who appear to support this lynching. They are clearly, stirring up racism rather than combating racism.

Do we really want to regress here as a society and fall into this trap or do we want to rise above racism and allow Imus to accept the consequences for his actions by apologizing and taking his suspension? It is time for this world to set a higher standard and have a dream of turning toward forgiveness and setting a higher standard for all races. I believe in consequences that are appropriate, not a full scale lynching.

Did you see that N.J. street gang, a.k.a. Rutgers team, playing pathetic victim for the fawning dirtbags of the media? What Mr. Imus said has been shown to be only the tip of the iceberg. Bloodshot sumpen eyes, kinky hair, police records, tattoos, jutting upthrust buttocks, wide flat snouts, thuggish behavior on the court, illegitimate children, shortz hanging to the floor, drugs. But this is the opportunity to mau-mau a white boy, and a famous and wealthy one no less.

Ok where is the major uproar from Jackson, Sharpton, And the black comunity this morning why Isn't it all over the news calling for the woman in the duke lie to be prossicuted for her lies that didn't just hurt feelings but really did screw up three young lives. No but you call for the DA's head. People this wasn't started by him this was began by a Black Stripper . if any one else files false charges then they are aressted. But the the Als and Jacksons of the world feel they owe no one an appology . Step up REV. An say your sorry for jumping on the race train and railroading these kids. But we call for Imus' job over a few words that were sorta a compliment . they are tough they got out there and played hard and did the best . and how do these comments hurt thier careers, college years, thier future. When what a black woman did and apparently is getting by with. did ruin a life no three lives . If A white makes a comment or does some thing deemed by the black community as wrong it is marched on ,protested , and throwen back to slave issues. If a black person makes comments, kills some one, robs somebody, joins a gang or kills a cop we hear about how bad thier life is and how they are picked on, and how slavery caused them to be the way the are . we don't hold them accountable . You Should be outraged at your own for thier choices.

All you "Christians" who worship a deity who proclaimed "forgive them for they know not what they do" after enduring much more than three little words - what is your real agenda????

I agree. As for me I am going to contact all the companies that bailed and let them know I will never use there items again and will ALWAYS give them bad press. Word of mouth works two ways. We that believe in freedom of speech need to say so to these people and let them know we will boycott them too. Please don%u2019t forget he is a SHOCK JOCK, Duh!
Wake up America! Deal with real issues (like personal freedoms) and remember this separates us all even more. As for Rev. "git down" Practice that forgiveness that you preach. If you are a reverend I DONT want to be where you are going.

Steve Capus, NBC President has fired Imus. CBS's Bruce Gordon said he hoped Imus would be fired. So now he got his wish. Are they all going to get together with C. Vivian Stringer, the Rutgers Women's Basketball Coach to go after MTV and all the black rappers and all the black comedians who denigrate African American women on a daily basis!!! When will Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton carry their picket signs in front of the stations that play that filthy music, and in front of the recording studios who produce it? Chris Rock says that only black people understand black jokes, and white people who laugh at them are racist. If that's the case, white people should wise up and stop buying tickets to Chris Rock performances. To scapegoat Imus for this one is WRONG!
