My Interview With Michael J. Fox

(CBS)
I’ve interviewed Michael J. Fox several times before – but never quite like this.

After all the controversy and publicity and debate about his political ad, and the criticism he got from people like Rush Limbaugh, he really is in the eye of a political storm right now. But when he came to our studio for our exclusive interview, he was remarkably calm. He was also obviously symptomatic. He trembled uncontrollably, and his legs shook, but he explained it was actually a side effect of not taking enough medication. He told me he reduced his dosage because he didn’t want to have dyskinesia, which is the side effect of too much medication, and which causes the swaying back and forth that was so evident in the controversial ad for Missouri Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill. Fox said that he can never tell from one day to the next how serious his symptoms will be. It’s a crapshoot.

Our interview lasted about 30 minutes, and we covered a wide range of topics. He explained why he favors embryonic stem cell research, why he has taken up this cause now, and why he believes he needs to do everything he can to help find a cure for debilitating diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. He talked about politics and how he supports both Democrats and Republicans -- he’s a big backer of Arlen Specter, among others – and he spoke with great feeling about how he’s living with this disease.

(CBS)
And he emphasized that, despite what his critics have charged, in his words, “I’m not a victim.” He said he spent years having teenage girls put his poster on the wall, but that he threw his vanity out the window years ago. What matters now, he said, is finding a cure for Parkinson’s.

No matter how you feel about the issue of embryonic stem cell research, you can’t help but be moved by Michael J. Fox’s courage.

You can see it for yourself on tonight's CBS Evening News, and later tonight the entire interview will be posted here on the Web.

Whatever your views on embryonic stem cell research the personal attacks on Michael J. Fox by Rush Limbaugh are simply despicable. They represent the latest "swift-boating" that successfully denied a true American patriot, Senator John Kerry, from the White House and is now aimed at a crusading victim of Parkinson's disease. The right must value the microscopic embryo that is on the way to the garbage more than a great American like Michael J. Fox, or Christopher Reeve who also fought hard for more funding for embryonic stem cell research. It is time for Americans to reject this fundamentalist attitude that yearns for the Dark Ages to return and to reject the Republicans who have embraced this thinking. Back to the Future for Fox, not the past.

hey patriot, rush limbaugh has more sympathy for fox
than you have under your fingernail..he gives more to medical charities than you pay for your drugs creep..read limbaughs article and don't listen to the msm papers and tv and read what he really said.
and also read what the majority of the people think
about the government paying for cell research..there is more research going on now than there ever was in history, patriot.....you a patriot???? wow !!!!!

Maybe you people should actually LISTEN to Rush's show before you go spouting off about what you HEARD he said about Fox. He did not once attack the man personally (unlike those of you who love to call Rush a drug addict and law breaker but people like Robin Williams and every other hoodlum rapper is a saint) and he specifically said Fox was "either off his medications or acting." How is that a personal attack? It isn't. It is factual which is what continues to trip Liberals like you and the media up. The point Rush has made is not about Fox but about the content of the commercial. It is not factual. Fact #1 there is not ONE single documented case of embryonic stem cells being used right now as a cure or treatment for anything. Fact #2 there are over 70 afflictions/diseases being treated or having some sort of impact from the use of adult stem cells. So tell me why you on the left are so gung ho to take life instead of giving it.

Did anybody at CBS bother to actually *listen* to Limbaugh? (My jaded guess would be, of course you did.) He was referring to Fox's ADMITTED manipulation of his symptoms so that he might, in turn, manipulate public opinion. And if I were in Fox's shoes (and as a person with a degenerative physical disability, I sort of am), I would probably do the same thing. But let's get the story straight, k? Rush was criticizing both the conveyance and content of Fox's political message, not a guy with Parkinson's. Gimps are not exempt from criticism in the arena of ideas. Read the transcript of Rush's comments for yourself.

A little information is a dangerous thing, and what is being told in the media isn't the whole story. The bill for which Mr. Fox has been asked to speak out is a bill that would legalize cloning. Period. The bill isn't about embryonic stem cell research, but like many bills in Congress, it has been mis-labeled in order to confuse people into voting for it.

Of course everybody wishes that Parkinson's could be cured, of course anybody with a heart would be sympathetic to Mr. Fox's condition ... and that is what the writer's of the bill are hoping for -- sympathy for a very tragic situation that will result in the passage of a bill that will do absolutely NOTHING to help him or anyone else with Parkinson's.

Very little political maneuvering is done at the surface; what we are told, and what will really happen, are very often two very different things. Politics is a game of tricks, smoke, and mirrors. The assumption is that the American people, as a whole, are gullible and ignorant and they bank on this to get bills like this passed. (continued)

How about a balanced report? Say an interview with Jim Caviezel, or Patricia Heaton about why they oppose Amendment 2? Never ceases to amaze me how liberals get a pass.

(contined from my post below)

Whether or not Mr. Fox understands the true scope of the bills his candidates are supporting is hard to say; my hunch is that he doesn't.

Believe what you want about Rush Limbaugh; but also do what no one wants you to do before you form your opinion -- read the transcripts that have been thoroughly mis-quoted in all of these stories. Once you've done that -- once you've insured that you aren't gullible or ignorant, then form your opinion. But to form it based only on what the mainstream media is telling you is to play right into their hands.

The politicians Fox is opposing do not want to make embryonic stem cell research illegal. They may not want to see the US government fund it, but they're not against the research.

They're against cloning. That's the bill, that's the truth, and that's not what Micheal J. Fox is telling you. Get informed. And then vote.

Rush Limbaugh is a brilliant entertainer, but an enternainer nonetheless. Listen to Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony et al and you will hear far more incindiary diatribe than this..so why is Rush scrutinized? Because his opinion is influential and his listeners actually get out there and vote, so the liberal media will do anything in their power to destroy his credibility. Michael J. Fox is nothing more than a pawn being used to push federal funding of EMBRYONIC stem cell research and even more, defeating the Republicans. He has an agenda to be sure and I'm thrilled that there are people like Rush who have the courage to call these elitists out when they try and manipulate the public. I hope it backfires on Fox...but I sincerely hope they do find a cure for his affliction.

http://www.stemcellresearch.org/facts/treatments.htm has a list of over 70 diseases that have benefited from peer-reviewed research using ADULT stem cells which includes various forms of cancer, auto-immune diseases, etc. Currently the research shows no benefits from the use of EMBRYONIC stem cells. Why is anyone advocating something science has shown to not be beneficial? What political gain is there? Hmmm?

Actually you couldn't be more wrong (although you are not quoting Limbaugh verbatim). It isn't at all "factual". "Either or" questions are "speculative". I know conservatives have a hard time with the concept that speculation does not equal fact.

Rush was using this speculation to call into question Fox's genuineness which would indeed be an ad hominem attack. It was also baseless on BOTH possibilities as was pointed out by Fox in the above interview if you even bothered to read it. -- "[Fox] told [Couric] he reduced his dosage because he didn%u2019t want to have dyskinesia, which is the side effect of too much medication, and which causes the swaying back and forth that was so evident in the controversial ad..."

Now we find out he took TOO MUCH medication?
How about reporting the WHOLE STORY CBS? Or, do you just continue to report the story as you want it, not as the facts support it? Didn't you learn anything from the Dan Rather debacle? Or is poor old Dan still looking for those darned documents? Congratulations on 7th place in your time slot Katie.

Thank you for your incredible, compassionate interview with Michael J. Fox. I saw firsthand the effects of Parkinson on my father and one each of his brothers. Obviously, despite assurances from the doctors, i worry that one day i will face the same challenges and I pray that with the help of people like Fox a cure is found for Parkinsons.

Rush Limbaugh did NOT criticize Michael J. Fox. He said that in the commercial Fox was either off his medication or acting. Fox has said in interviews and in his book that he often goes off his medication to make the impression he wants to. Rush Limbaugh said he didn't blame him for that. Rush just felt sorry because Fox got used by some less than honest politicians.

Wonderful!!!!

The most important point of all....
is this....
most simply....
recycling cells that would
have otherwise become trash and using them instead
to create growth and healing in the lives of others.

We have had the ability to regrow a severed
spinal cord for over 10 years now.
It is an utter disgrace that this has been opposed.
This is recycling cells it is not causing
abortion.
These are cells that are destroyed otherwise.
The end result
is trash or life.

Choose life.

I am tired of everytime I watch the news that 98% of the news stories between CBS, MSNBC, or ABC that the they take sides and never tell the truth about the news. This topic is a big example of this. My father-in-law died of Parkinson%u2019s and my uncle died of Alzheimer%u2019s and I really would like to see a cure one day because I would not wish that anyone should suffer this disease. But let's look at fact and the current truth of the matter and that is the embryonic stem cell has never produced 1 result of a hope that some with this disease could be cured or even help treat it. In your report tonight, Fox said that none of the current embryonic stem cells are being used but just thrown away which is not entirely true. These old stem cells were allowed to be used but it was never mentioned what the results were. Maybe it was because there wasn't any. I rather see the governments money spent on things that are producing results and not something that gives false hope. Katie, stop taking sides and report the truth and news without your personal opions. I want to know the real news not fabricated news just so you can get an audience.

Since you now gave a large portion of time with Fox, you now NEED to bring Rush on and let him tell his side and Rush, you need to accept her invatation because if you intend to blast people on the air, do it in an interview to explain your postition. But we all no that CBS will never bring Rush on for an interview because CBS, NBC and ABC need to take sides with lies in order to tell news. REPORT THE TRUTH AND FACTS and don't give me twisted news that doesn't tell both sides because your interview does not do it.

I agree with the desire to have a discussion. I know from experience the varied effects of the disease and how unpredictable the control is. If we just suspend skepticism and manage the desire to be right... can we have a conversation like human beings? My strong faith causes me to believe this option to save lives was made known to us with the expectation that we show wisdom in it's use and development. We're thowing an opportunity to save lives away in the fear that we will go too far and destroy life. Can't we use the wisdom God has given us to take advantage of the opportunity? Let's insist on rational discussion and recognize the intelligent solution God planned for us rather than shout each other down and act like godless fools.

CBS news is true to its liberal bias and is masking the truth in elitism and hypocrisy. Any chance to bash Rush Lmbaugh... it will take; even 10 minutes of precious news time. It slanted that MJ Fox interviw and did not tell the whole truth. Embryonic stem cell research is not successful, adult stem cell research is. It is not an issue of supporting or not; it is an issue of supporting a failed embryonic stem cell program vs adult stem cells.

Like a true liberal and CBS newscaster Couric had to END (the powerful place according to any grade/high school debater) with her "statement" of disclosure. Of course more victimization is what we really got. She couldn't find ANY reputable foundation working on Parkinson's before Fox's self serving Foundation?? Polio was cured by private research. Heart transplant and bypass by private research. And many more. The Fox INJECTED himself in the political race WHERE HE does not even live. That is sympathy gimmick. I challenge lying CBS and Couric to give a 30 minute interview to DR. Charles Krauthammer (I apologize if misspelled last name) who lives in a wheelchair and has spoken on this topic from point of MEDICAL science. I know you won't because of lies and bias. The law WOULD permit cloning. That embryo Patriot(???) says is headed for garbage probably came from abortion on 13 year old without parent knowledge. Do the liberals always have to kill first to claim they give life???? Fox should return to Canada where they have medical system that all the liberals say is so great. They will cure him?????

THANK YOU, Michael J. Fox, Katie Couric and CBS News! The message is real. The need is now. My family has been diminished by the death of my beautiful sister just 9 days before a potentially life saving bone marrow transplant from a perfect donor match. A perfect match!! It was just 9 days too late. And my strong, proud father suffered for years with debilitating Parkinson's before his death in 1997. There is NO reason for this to continue. Bravo on tonight's broadcast!!! Keep spreading the message. You've already paid the cost for the right to do so.

I guess sums_CBS was all for using the Bomb and continued research. Using that knowledge we have!!! I believe the use of the bomb at that time and place in the world was proper and demanded, by the way. Ambrose, after years of criticizing Truman, turned to agreement just before he died. Sometimes it just takes a lifetime of thinking to realize not all knowledge is wonderful. The beginning of sin was a stupid attempt to be as smart as GOD. As Ronald Reagan, who NEVER, in spite of lies told by Ronnie, advocated government in embryonic research said, "if you want the government involved in your solution it probably headed wrong direction."

Katie needs to do what Baghdad Dan did. Find and bring on ONE REPUTABLE medical (not CBS hack) researcher to specifically tell us why they THINK EMBRYONIC stell research is bringing a cure to Parkinsons or any other disease. Bring on some real truth for a change. Ask a pharmaceutical executive (the people who give us so many miracles and you hate) what they think.

Michael J. Fox said in the interview he supported Arlen Spector. I guess it takes a Republican like Spector to have such a serious illness for one to fully understand the importance of stem cell research. Perhaps more Republicans and or their family members need to fall victim to serious diseases/illnesses such as Parkinson's, paralysis, cancer, Alzheimers, etc., before they see the light on this moral/political issue. These IVF stem cells would otherwise be trashed. Why not allow science labs put them to use to potentially find cures for these life altering diseases/illnesses.

Let's say for argument sake that Rush fell off a horse and doctors told him he had a spinal injury, but there was a possibility for recovery, but there was no time-table. (Remember he went deaf as a result of his drug addiction, but had the luxury of spending tens of thousands of dollars on cochlear implants to have his hearing restored)

He then discovers there is a break-through, experimental drug available (in testing phase) using embryonic stem cells. You *** well better believe he'd be the first one in line to sniff, snort or inject the drug!

Michael J. Fox is to be admired for his stance and his courage. I salute him and hope that a cure is found in our lifetime for his Parkinson%u2019s as well as many other diseases and illnesses that perhaps can only be cured by the use of embryonic stem cells.

To those of you making cruel comments about Katie's father... how dare you. You obviously have never had to care for a sick loved one. This is the core of the problems we're having in this country. Us against them. There are simply too many heartless people walking and breathing and pronouncing they're Christian. I'm simply taken aback by the cruelty. My father died over 20 years ago from lung cancer (he didn't smoke). He was around asbestos on ships in the Navy. In the last day or two announcements have been made about new breakthroughs, pre-screenings and advances for lung cancer - the number one cancer. My father was 80 pounds when he died, had gangrene on his feet and legs. Watching him wither away to nothing was the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life. He was only 47 years old. Had he been diagnosed today, we'd probably have him around for many more years because of the advancements of SCIENCE.

I can attest to Michael J. Fox's statement about taking too much medication that will dyskinesia to come about. My partner of 25 years had PD, and they had thid dyskinesia quite often, but not as serious as Mr. Fox's condition, and they was more advanced in his condition, as much as his medication, 50/250 Sinemet is what he had to use, and this was 11 years ago. And Yes, being a Republican I am for Stem Cell Research too, for if it gives someone a chance in the future for better quality life, then let's get it on already. McGaskill, stinks though, she's not getting my vote!

Thank you Katie for this incisive interview with Michael J Fox.What a class act he is. He could have railed against that idiot-Rush Limbaugh, instead he pointed out that his disease is apolitical and he rightly pointed out that it will take a bi-partisian solution to cure it. After I finish these remarks, I am going on-line to make a contribution to Michael's Foundation.
Perhaps if all of us who are outraged by Rush Limbaugh's crude and ignorant remarks were to made out a check to Michael's Parkinson Foundation we can speak in a resounding voice our displeasure with Rush's ignorance.

How quick we are to condem others, yet do so and justify our actions/comments in the name of religion. Why don't we just get the arguement over with and chose one religious view to be the ultimate guideline for our country and our lives? It seems to work in the middle east. Let's forget the brave men and women who gave, and continue to give, their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms we enjoy. After all, it's only "our own" viewpoint that's correct. Extremist say "I'm right, your wrong." Yet when they get to heaven they may find themself shrugging and saying "oops, I was adament and wrong. But "Hey, I was wrong for you God!" Maybe we're all a little right. Maybe all a little wrong. But if Mr. Fox and others, who believe they are trying to help even one life, enjoy the beauty of their world a little more, let them. Who are we, or you (reader) to judge him/them. Unless you are God almighty, or his son or the power you believe in....let it be. Let him be. Someone once said, Judge not, lest ye be judged. Hmmmm, interesting. Mr. Fox, I don't know if your wrong or right. But I do believe that in your heart you are truely trying to help others. "Trying", what a wonderful gift to mankind. If God faults you for that, then I have no hope for my own redemption. Sometimes in life I could have tried harder, but didn't. Hopefully there's still time. Thank you for the inspiration. Why doesn't anyone in the news actually pull up the bill and see who's telling the truth (or not)
Here is the link to the proposed MO bill.
http://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/2006petitions/ppStemCell.asp
It looks like to me it was written to say you can't buy eggs(4),clone (1) or create an embryos just for testing(2)
Except for the caveat in (17) you can be paid for lost wages while donating, and the sperm bank gets paid for the eggs. It looks like (5),(14),(15) give a loophole for any kind of procedure if it's part of a trial. That takes care of (1).
It looks like section(11) says you can use all the materials you want from fertility clinics. That kind of diminishes section(2).
I've seen a lot of the MO ads for this and it looks like the supporters are being very dishonest.

Thank you CBS for the extremely inspiring interview. I got my 13 year old daughter to watch it with me. She has now seen the face of a true hero. Simply put, success in "stem cell research" is a case of having the cake and being able to eat it too. I hope Fox's efforts will result in a huge pay off for all the people who suffer from seemingly incurable diseases. For now, I'll just take his advise and pray like I've never done before, while respecting the opinions of the other side.

Okay - help me please Ms. Couric .... according to your blog, Fox says taht in the campaign ad he is swaying from "too much" medication and at your interview he says he was exhibiting symptons of "not taking enough medication."

What kind of emotional manipulation is he or your trying to foist on the public?

What is the correct amount of medication that he should be taking? This is just unbelievable!

I don't agree with what Limbaugh said about Fox, but Limbaugh is a pundit, he gets paid to be controversial. Couric is a journalist, she should just be a journalist. If she wants to take a side on an issue, she should not mask it with the cloak of impartiality that comes with the job.

Do you think she ever admired the courageous stance of somebody *with* Parkinson's that was *against* embryonic stem cell research? Does John Paul II ring a bell?

Thank you Katie for bringing Michael J. Fox on the show. It is obvious by the uneducated comments out there about Michaels movements that most people don't have a clue about Parkinson's disease. First of all it is VERY difficult to figure out what dose of what medication will actually help the symptoms. Furthermore, what may be the right dose or the right medication this week may cause unwanted side effect the next. There are other factors that as well like stress and fatigue. I know these things because I was a nurse for 13 years and took care of many Parkinson's patients. IF YOU ARE GOING TO THROW THE EMBROYS AWAY THEN LET THEM BE PUT TO GOOD USE FOR FINDING A CURE FOR DISEASES! The main reason not to use them is based on someones religious beliefs. More people have died in the name of some religion than any number of stem cells we would use in research. I am deeply faithful and a Christian. Religion is the reason why we have such a problem in the world, especially in the middle east. Politicians play on that... both parties.

Hi Katie
I loved the interview with Michael J. Fox. It was very helpful to me because I did not know how serious this illness was. I have known people and I know people who have suffered from Parkinson%u2019s and Alzheimer%u2019s. My friend's mother has Parkinson's and my grandfather passed away from Alzheimer's. I am sorry to here about your father. I wish people wouldn't make rude comments about things like this. Some people just don't understand. I hope people will see this interview and really think about this cause and try to support it in many ways. Science research can help many ways. My classmate ,age 13 , has Diamond Blackfan Anemia and we are having fundraisers to raise money for his mother to have surgery. She has to try to have a baby that has a bone marrow match for her son and they are not in the best finacial place at this time. We are hoping for the best! You're an inspiration!

My friend, first, you need to get off of some of those 'miracles' so you can think clearly. The Pharma execs or the industry in general will not tell you anything positive about SCR. If SCR is as successful as it is hoped to be, there is no need for drugs. Do you get it yet, or do I need to spoon feed you this? I better spoon-feed you this, you sound like you are drinking too much Kool-Aid. No need for drugs mean, no need for the product of the Pharma companies, thus no exorbitant compensation for the Pharma exec. Now, you tell me why a Pharma exec would shoot himself in the foot (in the head for that matter) and tell anyone that SCR can be the future of medicine.

Also, use your internet connection for something useful, fer chrisake, and google the ton of information on the promises of SCR. Katie has bigger fish to fry than educate you, the bigger fish, you guessed, RATINGS. You're getting it, education is not good TV and does not get RATINGS. See, I told you you'd feel better once you stop drinking this Kool-Aid you call 'miracle'!

Get off of your soap boxes. RL was questioning the possibility of Fox politicizing his disease to support a bill that all but promises a cure for diseases without any solid proven studies. Furthermore the bill's content complicates the abortion and cloning debates. It now becomes a moral issue for you, me, our leaders, and the those impacted like Fox. This is a debate of morals involving life and the federal funding of something with questionable impacts.
So stay on point. RL said "IF" he was acting and "IF" he was off his meds.... He also wondered if Fox knew the real content of the bill and that stem cell research already existed in Missourr.
The fact is, Fox WAS manipulating his meds if he was purposely overmedicated. If it was not intentional, then why didn't they reshoot the ad? If Fox intended for those reactions to be a part of the ad to draw sympathy then why not admit it? What is there to be ashamed about? Admit the ad was intended to show the effects of his disease. That was Rush's question. A simple phone call to Rush to say, "the answer to your question Rush is yes, I overmedicated but we felt it was the right way to reach voters". No, he laughed his way to the CBS station and further drew more sympathy from confused people like yourselves.
Has anyone here with an opinion read the bill or looked at the transcript of RL's show? Or if stem cell research is already currently being done already but it's just not Fedearlly funded?

AND NOW THE REST OF THE STORY AND THE TRUTH:

do you know that stem cell research is ALREADY LEGAL in MO?

do you know that "ammendment 2", the MO bill that fox is promoting, IS NOT A STEM CELL BILL BUT RATHER A BILL TO CHANGE THE MO CONSTITUTION TO MAKE CLONING A CONSTITUTIONAL "RIGHT"?

do you know that the MO candidate that michael j. fox is supporting actually VOTED AGAINST stem cell research?

fox is either a dupe or a liar. if he didn't know that "2" is a cloning bill, then he IS a dupe, just like rush said. if he DID KNOW, then for promoting a cloning bill as an embryonic stem cell research bill, he's a liar. liars need to be taken to task. your own 'Rules of Engagement' require NO LYING.

do you know that EMBRYONIC stem cell research has shown 0, as in NO, NONE, NEIN, ZIP, Z-E-R-O, NADA, not even a single glimmer of hope in curing ANYTHING & that embryonic stem cell treatments have actually caused severe problems, such as tumors, in recipients?

do you know that it is actually ADULT STEM CELL RESEARCH that has shown much hope on MANY DIFFERENT genetic conditions?

if YOU DON'T know these FACTS, how come i have to do your homework for you?

however, if you DO KNOW these facts but are NOT REPORTING THEM, then you, are a liar & have NO PLACE in the field of journalism, which used to be a forum for the TRUTH, the WHOLE TRUTH & NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH. liars need to be taken to task. your own 'Rules of Engagement' require NO LYING.

WAKE UP!!

EVERY ONE OF YOU VIEWERS WHO ARE GUSHING & PROFUSELY THANKING CBS FOR THE MICHAEL J. FOX STORY HAVE ONLY HALF THE STORY & HALF OF THAT HALF IS FALSE. THE TRUTH IS THAT EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH HAS PROVEN TO BE A DEAD END!!!

IT'S THE STEM CELL RESEARCHERS THAT ARE SAYING SO!!!

THAT'S WHY THERE'S NO PRIVATE MONEY FLOWING IN!!!

THAT'S WHY THE EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCHERS ARE TRYING TO DUPE US U.S. TAXPAYERS INTO PAYING FOR THE RESEARCH!!!

IN TRUTH, IT'S THE ADULT STEM CELL RESEARCH THAT HAS SHOWN MUCH PROGRESS & PROMISE BUT LIBS DON'T WANT TO GO THAT DIRECTION BECAUSE EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH IS AN ATTEMPT TO RATIONALIZE & VALIDATE THE PRACTICE OF BUTCHERING THE UNBORN!!!

AGAIN: IT'S THE STEM CELL RESEARCHERS THAT ARE SAYING SO!!!
