"Repugnant"

The kerfuffle continues.

We’ve gotten a ton of comments and e-mails from readers who are upset that Katie used the word “repugnant” in connection with Brian Rohrbough’s now infamous “freeSpeech” segment. Evidently, a certain television personality known for his tightly-knotted neckties (initials B.O’R) quoted the blog last night and expressed some displeasure that this word was used in connection with the segment.

Let’s set the record straight.

This is what Katie said on the blog:

We knew when we decided to put on this segment that a lot of people would disagree with it. We also knew some might even find it repugnant. (Some of you made that point loud and clear!)
Well, thousands wrote in, and many did indeed say they found Rohrbough’s views, in effect, “repugnant” (which Webster’s defines as “distasteful” and “offensive.”)

These are people who went beyond merely disagreeing with Rohrbough. They are people who wrote in with comments like this:

I was appalled by your recent “free speech” segment giving voice to an anti-evolution nutjob…
Or this:

I could scarcely believe the utter nonsense that Mr. Rohrbough was broadcasting.
And then there was this:

I take great umbrage with Mr. Rohrbough’s “free speech” comments…there must be a rebuttal to his absurd and, yes, repugnant comments.
Well, as Katie indicated, we sort of expected that. We expected that not because we personally think his ideas are repugnant (we don’t) but because they are uncompromising, and unequivocal – he’s anti-abortion, anti-evolution and pro-prayer in schools. A sizable number of people take issue with those positions—and some of the more strident members of the populace wrote in to tell us, among other things, that they’ll never watch CBS again because we let Rohrbough speak his mind.

Of course, many do agree with Rohrbough’s views, and we’ve been hearing more and more from that side of the debate. (A lot of folks didn’t know he was on until they saw other reports about it, so they’re just joining the debate now.) Many expressed gratitude that the “real America” was being heard. Some endorsed Rohrbough’s opinions, a few passionately.

I whole-heartedly support Mr. Rohrbough. We don't live in a vaccum no matter how much some would like to believe we do. What you do affects me, what I do affects you. We are becoming a morally "repugnant" country with what we allow and what we say is "truth."

I am in agreement with Mr. Rohrbaugh 100%. Liberal elitists can't seem to understand why the teaching of evolution (which, by the way, is a theory and has not been proven, and cannot be proven, because it is false) would have a bearing on the tragic school shootings. That is because they thumb their nose at the Creator of the universe.

Lets face the facts: a majority of Americans are Christians and what Rohrbaugh said reflects most of our values and beliefs. After all it is the Christian faith that promotes tolerance, equality, and understanding.
So there you have it.

Katie never said his views were repugnant. She said, rather, that we knew some might find them repugnant. And some – many – did.

Apparently you didn't bother reading the statistics. Again, they prove that those countries with a much higher acceptance of human evolution have correspondingly lower social ills, not higher, as the NeoCon reactionaries would have us believe, like Tom Delay, who said,

"The current House majority leader T. DeLay contends that high crime rates and tragedies like the Columbine assault will continue as long schools teach children "that they are nothing but glorified apes who have evolutionized [sic] out of some primordial soup of mud"

That simplistic NeoCon attitude totally contradicts the evidence. The fact is, the more people in a country who believe in a litteral translation of the the simplistic fairy tale of creationism contained in the bible, like the US, the higher the social ills, like violent crime, out of wedlock births, drug abuse, etc.

The facts show that what the NeoCons claim is just the opposite of the reality.

Prove to me otherwise, using actual studies and statistics, instead of emotional rants with no basis in reality.

Re: happystan and evolution means less crime.

You used Japan as a good reason to go with evolution. Lower crime, et al. Lefties would have a really, really hard time living and working under Japan's governing and laws. They have severe laws that are adherred to faithfully. Not alot of gray area--just black and white. You won't find judges there deciding that criminals should not be punished for heinous crimes. Rather, they should be 'rehabilitated'. Evolution or no is not the reason for Japan's low crime rate. The same goes for many countries. Crime is not tolerated, period. It is dealt with severely.

The following research settles this innane argument of wether or not the teaching of evolution is to blame for America's social ills.

http://moses.creighton.edu/JRS/2005/2005-11.html

The research clearly shows that the more people in society accept evolution, the less their social ills.

Take Japan for instance.

Practically 5% of the population absolutely believes in God while 80% accept human evolution.

Whereas in the US it's just the opposite. Over 60% of the population absolutely believes in God, while only 45% of the populatin accepts human evolution. & 30% of Americans take the bible litterally while practically 0% of Japanese take it litterally.

Yet Japan's murder rate is 1/8th what it is in the US and their robery rate is 1/200th of the US rate.

here

http://www.bookmice.net/darkchilde/japan/crime.html

Explain that correlation.

While we're arguing over wether or not evolution ought to be taught in the classroom we're tied with Latvia at #25 in academic achievement.

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0923110.html

Apparently it's the bible thumping Neocons who are responsible for America's social ills, including the precipitous free fall of the academic achievement of our children, by confusing them and wasting time arguing about evolution, when it is clearly a scientific fact.

While we sit here and carry on this innane argument, the rest of the world evolves.

Believe or not, love the bible or not, the ideals implied by its fundamental tenets are the very thing that is lacking from the school system:
Thou shall not murder, steal, commit adultery, honor thy parents, covet things of others.to treat others as you would wish to be. These are vital ideals that children and adults must have to live peaceful lives.

Yet you wish us to accept and live by the unproven best guess of science? It is just a theory, while the bible has been documented as fact, or at least alot closer to fact than evolution could ever be considered. You tell our children they came from nothing, are in fact nothing and will be nothing when they die, and yet you expect different results from how things are today!

If religious belief had never been stolen from the rightful and innocent ears of school children, Columbine or any other such preventable tragedy might not have ever occurred. How can i say such a thing, how can anyone honestly think otherwise?

It's like living every day of your life by forcing your conscience which is telling you what's right into a sad state of submission...
Thank you Mr. Rohrbough!

First and foremost i wish to state how disgusted i am with the comments of every liberal minded responder to this subject. You are what is wrong with this nation. You have no moral convictions that have any solid foundation behind them. Through your secular humanist actions you have eroded the will of our founders whose belief in the implied morality taught by the bible made our country into what made it great. You also lack resolve to see things to their conclusion. This war is more necessary than any other before, and yet half of you want us to cower away like Spain.

I am furthermore disgusted in how your liberalism has twisted the "separation of church and state"
This applies only to a national declaration of a singular mandatory belief or branch of belief; not the total and complete purging of relgious belief from all its citizens, this was not their wish.

George washington in his farewell address spoke of how this nation would fail if it lost sight of the source of its very freedoms: In religious belief. Your actions have stalled this nation.

I am not a religious person, i believe there is a god, i choose not adhere to any branch of belief due to my inability to discern the true god. That requisite covered, i do see great value in the moral teachings of the bible.

I agree whole heartedly with the justifiable opinions of Mr.Rohrbough. I say again how can such honest and heartfelt truth be called repugnant.-----

I said the TENDENCY is that people become more liberal with the more education they receive and the more they travel.

I have family members who are chief officers of international companies and Republicans and religious.

The fact is that those who live in the red states TEND to travel less than those in blue states.

I have recently moved from Washington, DC to northern Florida, I have seen these cultural differences first-hand. Of course, I never actually realized the full extend of these glaring cultural differences until I actually moved here and started a job.

In Dc, even the poor people have at least been to NYC or Jamaica. Down here in FL, many middle-class people have never even been outside of Florida!

Like I said, I don't WANT to feel "elitist", but I cannot help it! These people think the war in Iraq is just fine, but they don't know the first thing about Iraq! I myself have known people from basically every country in the Middle East, and I am acutely aware of the differences of those countries. If you are ignorant about a subject, that is fine (I myself am not schooled on every subject!) but just be willing to say that you do not have enough information on the matter to form a firm opinion.

For those of you who bash BO'R..have you really ever watched it? Or are you just following the crowd? Sure, he gets aggravated sometimes with the a guest who is just spinning with his party's talking points. He prefers a little more substance and discussion than that. But he does have guest from both sides more often than not. That is more than the other commentators. If you think Bill is bad, watch Chris Matthews[MSNBC]. He stacks the deck whenever someone is on with a conservative point of view--which he hardly ever does.If so it's usually 3 on 1. Then he constantly butts in and talks loudly and rudely over their words. His liberal point of view is worn on his sleeve. Keith Olbermann on the same channel does the same, only he doesn't even bother with bringing anyone on with a different view than his. Mostly he just likes to hear himself bash and trash. It's really getting ridiculous with the "Bill" bashing.

Re:Bandit
I believe our government is the best though not perfect by any means. Obviously, you do not. My questions to you are--why are you living here instead of some other country under some other government? Why are so many people clamoring to come here to live?
BTW, People can be educated by more than one method. Open your mind a little more. Don't limit education by only 2 methods--college degrees and travel abroad. Ignorance comes in more than one package.

Mr. Kandra seems to be missing the point entirely. Had the guest speaker been Cindy Sheehan talking about what%u2019s wrong with America, or a Muslim cleric talking about how Islam is a peaceful religion, or Gloria Steinem talking about how glad she is there is finally a woman anchor of the evening news, would Katie have qualified their statements that some people may find them repugnant? Probably not, as she would feel that people who felt those topics repugnant were not worthy of mention. Katie is to the left what Sean Hannity is to the right, she should just be honest and be who she is, maybe someone would watch the broadcast

A scene from the Matrix

Take the red pill and you will truely see. Take the black pill and you can go back to your blind life.

Come on, the evidence is overwhelming to the fact that the media is biased. Whenever a right winger ads his two cents its "our conservative commitator says"... meanwhile on the bottem of the screen it says ..warning his views are not the views of our station, warning nutty christians conservative opionions are harmfull. Its all racked up, stacked up biased. Liberals own the TV, Republicans own the Talk Radio.

Well it is nice to hear that Couric and CBS do not find Mr. Rohrbough's views
"Repugnant". It does show however that even the media can be misunderstood. Perhaps it will help teach CBS to report the message intended rather than their slanted twist. I for one agree completely with Brian Rohrbough and can only point to everything going on around us as an example for proof. I understand there will be many that blindly tout a passionate disproval of Mr. Rohrbough's views.

It is sad that one could have the idea that if anyone does not agree with the opinion that evolution is fact they are not educated or some how unintelligent. It is also sad to see that there are so many that can not see the link between senseless killings and evolution.

God does not make bad things happen. We do by not seeking his protection and because we live in a sin filled world. I know those that think belief in God makes me dumb will only see my comments as mere slobber. Again being blind is not limited to Christians. Becoming emotional over evolution is not science but religion. I will gladly change my views when someone truly brings forth proof of fact of evolution. But that will never happen. We should never think that all we see is all there is. True science understands this. Evolutionists seam not to.

The research --- Mr. Dorgan on Commentators

He found that the media is overwhelmingly liberal. Not only liberal, but strategize at having only liberal biased guests on talk shows.

Google it.. find out about it. Free your mind and the rest will follow.

What gets me is that the segment is called freeSpeech, but some think that freeSpeech should only be allowed if it matches their point of view and when it does not scream they will never watch the show again. Give me a break people CBS News is trying to give various points of view a forum and have a discussion. I applaud their decision to put this on even though I may personally disagree with what he said. You do not see this happending that often on a certain commentator's show with the initials B O'R, usually is the views expressed don't match his he bullies them and yells louder. Please continue to provide various points of view on freeSpeech it is one of my favorite segments of the new broadcast.

Utica1999 Sugested that the liberal medea is hypocritical and bias, and "can't stand to see a viewpoint other than their own on national television."
Could not the same be said of the conservatives.
For OReilly and others to accuse the "liberal medea" of bias is for all intensive purpose the Pot calling the kettle black.
I belive it was David Brinkley Whom once said that it was difficult to be unbias, "You would be for nothing, or against nothing". Our own personal feelings will always sneak through.
I disagree with what Mr. Rohrbaugh said but I thank CBS ans Miss Couric for giving him the opportunity to say it. I do enjoy the the "Free Speech" segment. Heaes to the first amendment.
All the best I.

Bandit - you%u2019re funny.
Most of the people I associate with, (who are right wingers), not only do they own their own businesses, but have BA's, BS, and believe it or not DR degrees. Also I, and my comrades have traveled through South America, North America, and South Mid-East. Why do you associate lack of education and travel with your silly logic. Most of the world%u2019s population is religious. Only 2-8% of the US population are atheists. Don%u2019t tout smart because you went to Disney land in Europe.

Again may I ask... how can we NOT feel "elitist" in the face of such ignorant people?

People who have never travelled outside the bible belt, who have certainly never travelled abroad, but think they know the best way to conduct our foreign policy. People who are not even college educated, have not taken advanced-level science classes, but think the bible is fact and science must be fiction. These are people who insist that their government is superior to all others, but they have never even visited another country and do not know anyone from other countries.

So who's really the elitist?

Of course back in the good old days when everyone prayed in school you could also lynch a black man for "lookin' funny" at your sister...

The idea that society has become more violent is simply false; the idea that forcing my children to pray to your God would make things better is also false.

The idea that teaching factual biological science has anything to do with any of this is ludicrous.

As for free speech; it's great. But let's see if the new CBC news will offer the oportunity to everyone. Will we be seeing PZ Myers or Richard Dawkins on the show to rebut this nonsense?

After studying these comments, I cant help but to think that these things are framed with the same judgment used in Dan Rathers Bush-Gate issues.

Why not be fair and just. Or is it JUST your view. Mrs Couric you offended me and 51% of the USA.
Lets call for Couric to resign!

Cowboy,
"When I watch the news I want just the facts.. I don't need some to tell me what I should think"

FYI: O'Reilly is not there to report the news. He is there to COMMENT on the news..HIS comments and thoughts, and debate them. He is a COMMENTATOR. Do you think that Keith Olbermann on MSNBC reports the news? NO, he also is a commentator. As O'Reilly tends toward the conservative, Olbermann tends toward the liberal. Yet,Mr. Olbermann constantly vents against O'Reilly while constantly airing his left wing beliefs as well as having lib person after lib person on his show. He's almost as bad as Air America. Most news programs and news commentators ARE on the liberal side. Yet, Fox catches it constantly for being "conservative". I watch all 3 major Cable News ch. and find Fox to be more fair and balanced than the others. I evaluate them on their telling a story the way it is rather than a slant on it..Fox comes closer to filling that bill for me..
