My First Week

(CBS)
Hi, everyone!

Okay, I’ve been waiting to exhale for some time now…and I finally have!!! Last night was my one week anniversary…and the good news is, I’m still employed! (I think) I’ve had no problem sleeping in until 7 every morning…and I’m really really enjoying my new gig. There’s a lot of excitement here about trying new things, and the people with whom I’m working are terrific-smart and funny and very dedicated to putting on the best product we can. I’m still getting used to the half hour format, but it’s gratifying to see how much we can get in…I so often experience information overload, being able to get a recap of the news summarized and synthesized is something I really like...hopefully some viewers feel the same!

Well, it’s been a whirlwind. I wish I could say that last Tuesday was just another day at the office -- or just another first day on the job – but it was so much more than that. I woke up more than a few times in the wee hours of that Tuesday morning…and to nobody’s surprise, the first day was jam-packed with the excitement and tension that comes with any new job. There were interviews and rehearsals and meetings throughout the day. I felt the usual butterflies in my stomach before the broadcast – actually, the butterflies felt more like gigantic peacocks (but that may have something to do with my last job). For the first time in a long time I actually had the sensation that my heart was going to actually penetrate my chest and end up on the scripts in front of me…it was beating THAT HARD.

There was some celebrating after the broadcast…some of my close friends got together to watch the show and had a martini waiting for me when I arrived at 7:30. I’m not a big drinker, but I have to say, that really hit the spot. But nothing was nicer than seeing my two daughters, probably more relieved than I was, that their mother had not completely embarrassed them on national television. They are so great. There was a little dancing and merriment (whatever that means) before I had to head to Washington to interview the president the next morning. (Good thing they cut me off after one martini!) Another crazy, surreal kind of day.

(CBS)
Visiting the White House is always a humbling experience. I’m always in awe of the history those walls have witnessed. And I was impressed by the respect President Bush has for the place. He even told one of our producers “Straighten your tie, young man. You’re in the White House.” I loved that.

Needless to say, it was what we call in the business, a crash. (That means there was very little time to put the interview together!) We ran some on the Evening News and a big portion on a special that aired that night. That was done so close to air that the producer, my friend Susan Zirinsky, said her running bra was somewhere between the edit room and the control room.

Add to that my first piece on 60 Minutes on the illnesses that thousands of first responders are experiencing five years after September 11th. To be a part of that broadcast was needless to say, an enormous thrill. My father called me afterwards and said, “Well, you’re doing what you’ve always wanted to do…reporting for 60 Minutes.” I used to watch the show when I was in high school sitting on the floor in my parents bedroom. I think it’s really what made me want to get into this crazy and wonderful business in the first place. Of course while I was preparing this piece I was in meetings with our producers, going over copy, doing promos, putting my spackle on (it takes a village to make me presentable on television) and helping shape the Evening News. It’s really exciting and really fun. I still can’t believe I’m privileged enough to have this job. One of the first things I said to the crew when we were rehearsing was…”can I ask you guys a question? How did this happen?” The sign off thing has been fun too. The suggestions are great to read, and as I said last night, even Letterman got into the act. Always happy to provide Dave with material! Bob Barker wants me to implore viewers at the end of every broadcast to “have your pets spayed or neutered.” Mmmmmmmmmmmm…interesting.

One of my favorite parts of the day has been recording the First Look segments that run here on the blog, and at CBSNews.com. It’s a great chance to show you how we put together the Evening News – and meet some of the amazing people who make it happen. It’s such a collaborative effort –and First Look lets you in on part of the collaboration. I think it also gets to show you that gathering the news isn’t always grim. We love what we do, and have a great time doing it. (Bill Owens: call your hair stylist!) And that is invaluable. No matter what you do for a living, if you love it and really enjoy the people you’re working with, it makes everything worthwhile.

We’re trying to make the news more accessible, more compelling, more interesting, and we’re trying to give people a little hope, optimism and even a chuckle when we can. Hopefully we’re making progress…I also think people who watch the show are less focused on some of the superficialities that media and gossip writers seem to obsess over…and the people who are watching are the reason I’m doing this. I’ll be posting more in the days ahead, but I just wanted to touch base and give you a few quick impressions of my first week in the chair, and under the spotlight.

As the late Karen Carpenter sang, “Close to you”, I mean, “We’ve only just begun.” Wow, how hip am I?

Stay tuned!

Katie -
What a joy to read your post this afternoon. You have done a fantastic job during your first week "in the chair." As I wrote in a previous comment, you truly do add a smile to my face on the days I get to watch your newscast. One thing is for sure - no one could ever replace you and your wit, charm, character and professionalism. I had the pleasure of meeting you when you visited Clearwater, Florida to speak on behalf of the American Cancer Society's colorectal cancer campaign and I loved how real and down to earth you were then and I am so pleased to see that you are still "keepin' it real".

Looking forward to watching you this evening.

For the sign-off thing, keep it simple. Part of your charm, Katie, is your spontaneity. If you feel like saying "thanks for joining us", say it. If you feel like saying "that's all folks", then say it. If you have to say the same thing every day, it won't be fun for you or us. Tell Bob B we all love the Price of Right, but honestly, I'm sick of him telling me to get my pets spayed or neutered. I don't even have a pet. Just my thoughts!

Mrs. Katie,

I have to say that being an 18 year old guy, I haven't always been interested in the "evening news," yet I've seemed to tivo your broadcast daily. It's nice to see some "new" "hip" material and presence in the news. I can definately relate to watching the news in high school, and wanting to do that more than anything. Being a freshman in college, I thought I had my major decided, but watching you and reading your thoughts makes me want to re evaluate some things.

Thanks for Keeping it Real,

Kristian S.

P.S. Your sign off should be, "And that's what's new in the news, see you tomorrow."

Katie,

You have always been #1 with me and my family. I have nothing but admiration for you and the job you do. Still, I never thought that there could be anyone to over through my favorite news anchor of all time Tom Brokaw but after this week I don't know what to say. You were my favorite in the mornings and now my family and I only watch you. You bring a great feeling and sensibility to the evening news that other wise would be dull, boring and sometimes overwhelming. Thank you Katie for being yourself no matter what! Oh and don't worry about your job, the ratings say it all for you!!! You're #1!!! I love the new ideas that you bring to CBS because it%u2019s all working.

Quite a first week! I am already seeing you develop your own style which will become easier as you become comfortable in you new position.
I would be interested in seeing more web space for your free speech segment. While scanning some of the posts, people have interesting feedback, pro and con. While this blog is not designed to being an actual forum, people might like to expand more on their thoughts regarding the comments of the Free Speech guests.
BTW, tonight's Free Speech comments were especially welcome to me. Lately this country has sidestepped the Constitution in some cases in hopes of acheiving quick results. Unfortunately if we forget the foundation of our own beliefs we have won nothing. We become the essence of what we are fighting.
Ms. Couric, thanks for offering the opportunity for free speech to be demonstrated.

My husband and I appreciate your delivering the news without interjecting anger and disgust. We viewed Dan Rather for many years but had to leave as he was oozing anger. We found NBC's Brian Williams to be full of disgust for our current President. Please continue to report the news without becoming angry. Leave it to the viewers to decide for themselves. Your "Free Speech" segment is refreshing, allowing a wide variety of views to be expressed is helpful. We appreciate your style in reporting and not talking down to us. We hope your delivery will help promote civility in the political conversations in our own USA. Thank you Katie Couric!

WOW!
Let me first say to Katie and to the CBS bigwig President who hired you, boy was I wrong!
Leading up to your taking the reigns of the CBS Evening News I was not looking foward to the change and I thought Bob was doing just fine for me. Katie I was not your #1 fan but watching you bring me the news each evening has sold me on the idea . Thank you Mr. CBS President for hiring Katie.
In my own defense, I had never watched the other network that you brought the news on, so I plead ignorance on not supporting you before you began bringing the CBS Evening News.
Katie, please overlook the other negative critical comments other viewers have left on this blog, your doing just great, or shall I say outstanding! You're pleasant to listen to, not in a rush, your delivery goes down as smooth as a cold glass of Arizona Green Tea. I can listen to what you have to share and mutitask at the same time and get the whole story. I also like some of the changes you and your producers have brought to the CBS Evening News and I am convinced you will help bring this news program to the top.
So Katie, I was wrong, you are the right newscaster for this honorable post, you are doing a fantastic job and please for me, thank
Mr. Bigwig CBS President for hiring you, what a great choice.
Sincerely,
One converted and commited viewer !

Congratulations on the excellent job you are doing at CBS news. I have been a fan of yours for years and I watched almost every day when you did the morning show. I really enjoy your candor, enthusiasm and the honesty to bring to your work. I've really enjoyed things like First Look, the Blog, your notebook and of course, the actual evening news. I love the things you and your gang are trying, especially the Free Speech segment. How do you have time to keep up with all the different aspects of the show? I want to thank you for trying so hard and I want to tell you how much I appreciate your work. You and your team will be successful because you are a very approachable, "real" person and when I watch your broadcast I feel like I'm talking with a good friend. Keep up the good work.

The "First Look" segment is definitely a keeper! It really does give a "behind the scenes view" and lighter side of the evening newscast. It's also a chance to see you smiling and laughing like before. Best wishes for continued success...

Katie,

I must first start by saying that I have been a fan of yours for many years - I always remember my dad watching you every morning as he got ready for work, it never failed, you were always apart of our mornings. Now, I am an avid fan. I'm sure you've heard it time and time again but you are a true inspiration! I was sad to see you leave the Today Show, but you are doing an amazing job at CBS. I was never a watcher of the evening news, but you have changed that! You and your team are reaching out to a whole new generation of views - I am in my final year of university and I am always interested to see your broadcast on the days events! I love what you guys are doing and the new spin you're putting on the news! Ignore the comments that people are leaving in ignorance - you sitting on the news desk makes the broadcast more real, your reaching out to more viewers on what seems like a one-on-one basis - your bringing the nes home to people, and it's working! Keep it up! But, More importantly, it's showing the world your amazing personality and that you really do care.

Keep smiling, you're doing great!

Used to be a big fan, lost interest as you strayed from your strengths, but being a woman I am rooting for you in this role. Since you bristle at being described as %u2018perky%u2019 or %u2018lacking gravitas%u2019, I am confused by your image. The clothes are not as business-like as 'the boys' and sitting on your desk rather than behind it as you did today certainly did not say 'serious' or 'important' to me. If you want the q-factor, I suggest using Brokaw as your guide. He always dressed and acted the part, the honest & likeability just exuded from his pores. You too have that elusive ability to seem like a friend or trusted colleague, so my advice would be to just let it glimmer subtly through. As far as content: it doesn't feel like national news. It seems more like a Dateline / CNN Headline News combo. I would prefer BBC World News as a model -- less sensationalism, less opinion, more facts, more perspective (of the relative place the USA or celebrities/fashion/pop music etc. play on the world stage). Risky, yes, it%u2019s easier to give folks what they want no matter now inane. My suggestion may not fly, but if it did wouldn't it be lovely to go down in history as the anchor that led the networks back to REAL NEWS, the %u2018female thing%u2019 be a mere footnote...? In any case, good luck.

Katie,

I'm going to have to say that I have enjoyed watching you on "The Today Show" and it feels like something is missing from your performance on "Today" and the one on CBS. I think on "Today" you seemed warm and inviting and almost glowing to some extent and natural. On CBS you seem a little stiff in some ways. I'm wondering if maybe that is nervousness at this point until you get settled in.
I do wish you all the best however and I will say I never watched the "CBS News" until you took over as anchor and have been watching it the past week mainly because you have been anchoring.

Ms. Couric: Thank you for a great first week so far. I've never really watched the Evening news before, but now you are a definite staple in the evenings. On the days, I can't make it home on time, I catch you on Tivo afterwards. Thank you for the relaxed yet professionalism that you and CBS News put into each broadcast. Everything is thought out down to the smallest detail. Also all these supplemental internet features are outstanding. I really feel a part of this process and it is very interesting and inspiring to see these "Behind the Scenes" aspect. As for your sign-off, I like how you've been doing it. Simple yet to the point and poignant. Thanks.

Every night is better than the one before. The 9/11 special and the "60 Minutes" piece perfectly showcased your journalism credentials. The trash I'm reading from media critics (and on this very blog)is clearly "tall poppy" stuff. You have legions of supporters who are cheering you on. You're doing a wonderful job. Really ... how cool was it to be on "60 Minutes"???

Hi Katie - I always respected your journalism background and thought that lended extra weight to your news and interests. I am impressed by your risk taking and attempting to break new ground. Unfortunatley, I won't watch CBS News any more. I will watch David Letterman - he is a fellow Hoosier, but the liberalism has been so transparent in the past that CBS lost me a long time ago. I thought that of the 3 major networks, NBC was the most centered (even if it leaned to the left), and I respect Tom Brokaw's love of the military and the Greatest Generation. I am not a pure conservative or a pure republican, I am not a pure liberal or an independent - I am mother of 4 with 2 in college, 2 more to go, and more than my Masters degree in education. There are way too many stories that have more than one angle, and as I taught me 3rd and 4th graders, "it isn't always black or white - we have to look for the gray". I could persuade them to believe something I saying, then throw the monkey wrench in and get them to see the other side of the argument. I loved watching their faces as I could really almost see the synapses firing as they tried to figure out which way to lean. News today only shows one side. I get my news from various sources - and try to work it out in my head (just like my kids). I take it ALL with a grain of salt...but CBS lost me and won't get me back.
I am so sorry - I really enjoyed watching you.
Very sincerely,

Contratulations Katie! For the last several years I've watched you on Today while getting ready for work. You always make the news personal, and that's a rare quality in a news anchor. You're charting new territory, and I just want you to know that a lot of 40-something working moms like me are cheering you on. I'll be watching every chance I get, and by the way, the website features are great.

Please, by all means, lean on the desk! Wear what makes you feel comfortable. Giggle. Smile. Cry. Be Katie! Please be Katie! Afterall, it's why we're here.

Well, it's why I'm here. I never watched the evening news before. But I'm a big Katie fan and couldn't wait to watch the first night. Now I'm hooked. I continue to watch because I am thrilled to find that Katie changed the evening news - not the other way around.

If the old fogies want to see a man in a suit, stone-faced behind a desk, there are still plenty of options for them. But times are changing. And, frankly, I'm thrilled to have someone who quotes Carpenter music leading the way!

Thank you, Katie. Keep up the great work. I, for one, hope to see YOU tomorrow.

With the utmost respect,

I never watched you on the Today show but thought I would give you a chance on the CBS News since I loved watching Bob Schaeffer and Dan Rather before him. Unfortunately, you don't do it for me. Your first mistake in my mind was asking the audience to find you a way to "sign off". You giving a nationwide broadcast, you should be prepared and your report should be strong and authorative and you should know your content, content and closing. You give the impression that you are not prepared and that is what you were third in the rankings on Sept 11th.

Katie, count me among the fans.

Yes, the old world way of the evening news was to deliver it straight faced, dry and %u201Cjust the facts, ma%u2019am.%u201D Well, today%u2019s world moves faster, is voiced in snippets and requires full color vibrancy to hold our attention. In that spirit, I love the life and breath you have brought to the national news, and am among the TiVo crowd recording your broadcast for viewing after work. Now you tell me...how many 5:00 news programs can claim that kind of following?

Only suggestion? Loosen up with your hands! Whether on the Today Show or in a First Look installment, your hands are a natural part of your delivery. Shake %u2018em loose and let %u2018em go!

You%u2019re a credit to the broadcast community%u2014keep up the stellar work.....

Ms. Couric,

I am really enjoying the new format. I also really like the features on the website. A lot of the time I cannot watch the evening news at 6:30 pm because I go work out after work. So it is great to be able to watch on-line.

You have blown the dust off of the evening news and made it interesting again. I have enjoyed the wonderful reporting that Lara Logan has been doing from Iraq and Afganistan. I also enjoyed the interviews that you have on the show especially the ones with the President of Walmart and Thomas Friedman. They were informative and interesting.

The Free Speech segment is also a great addition. I especially enjoyed the Red and Blue states and Bob Schiefer's take on the handling of detainees.

I had stopped watching the evening news and just went on-line or to one of the cable news channels. I always enjoyed the Today show when I was getting ready for work, so when you moved to CBS I decided to watch. You have made the evening news worth watching.

Thanks!

I wish to comment on tonight's article re Walmart.
Due to the present status on Walmart's organization, in that they are soliciting ***/*** Chamber management, I, for one, am boycotting all WALMARTS. This is very disheartening and upsetting.

Also, comment regarding Ford Motor Company's lost in profit, could this be from boycotting Ford for the same reason. This has never been brought out in the news media, which is sad. I would think CBS would be truthful and upwrite in presenting all aspects in covering the news.

Good Point! You and Katie should check out this piece from Media Matters:

After a week of "Free Speech" on CBS, no Democratic or liberal voices on national security
Summary: The first week of the new "Free Speech" segment on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric included appearances by Rudy Giuliani and Rush Limbaugh echoing GOP rhetoric on national security. But the program has offered no time to Democratic or progressive commentators to offer their views on the subject.

Hi Katie,

We like the new format of the CBS News. We are avid nightly news watchers and decided to give CBS a try after growing tried of the same topics beaten to death every night on other stations. We like that the daily news events covered in a concise fashion leaving time for human-interest stories and the Free Speech section.

We usually don't comment on fashion, but your attire and hair style seems to be varying greatly from night-to-night. Tonight, Wednesday, you looked relaxed and in your element, other nights you looked like you forced into a conservative appearance. We like you relaxed appearance, but don%u2019t think you should sit on the desk.

As for your sign-off, we appreciate that you thank us every night for watching and are very sincere saying it.

Keep up the good work.

Hi, Katie. Thank you for airing the piece that Lara Logan reported on Afghanistan. I had no idea that Afghanistan was even that advanced since the media rarely seems to report any positives at all. I was so proud to see the advances they have made. I realize that the piece was not entirely about positive things, but what country could say that? - Not even America with its murder rate, inner city crime and gangs, drugs, poverty, and lack of health care. Every society has these problems and, as you know, it takes time for democracies to advance and share equal rights among its citizens.

So kudos to you for finally reporting on the positives of that nation. Please have more stories like that about the progress made in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Americans do need to see the positive side of things as well while our men and women are fighting in these wars. Please consider doing more stories that are upbeat and uplifting on the rights and advancements that Afghanis and Iraqis are gaining. We would all appreciate it. It would not be conceding anyone's right to have their opinions about the war, it would just give us hope and pride that we are helping people who have the same common desires of love, peace, and freedom that we have.

Great job Katie,

I have rarely watched the evening news but now record the CBS Eve News because I love the fresh presentation. I applaude the in depth stories and Free Speech segments. I like having the news delivered by a woman, there is a more comforting and caring element to it. I think it would be completely fine to look feminine too, but not ***!

If you don't mind some style opinions (not that I look perfect, or even close, every day, but hate to admit it we care about how you look as well as the news) I'd love to see a little more color in your outfits and a softer lipstick. I didn't like the sitting on the desk bit at all - you are too classy for that, sorry.

Re: sign off, an anchor in San Diego used to say "Thanks for making us part of your day". Just an idea - you don't have to have the same sign off every day, you could rotate a few so if a particular one irritated some folks they wouldn't hear it all the time!

Congratulations, you are doing a great job!

Hey Kate,
I think you are doing a wonderful job. Nice to see a lovely face every night. I am a man, but I think having a female report the news is refreshing. Ihis will possibly open the doors for all minority groups.

Sincerely,
Frederick

How to establish a unique style without offending advocates of old forms is very challenging and undoubtedly there have been discussions ad nauseam about your openings and closings. Yes, the 'Boys Club' always sat behind a desk and looked soberly into the camera to offer viewers a severe 'Good Evening'. However, a delicate line is walked in finding the right balance between emulating an old approach and initiating a new one, particularly when it involves introducing the first female solo anchor. Opening with 'Hi, I'm Katie Couric' and closing by sitting legs-crossed, folksy-like, on a piece of the set brought to mind, at best, an image of the girl next door and, at worse, that sobriquet that has dogged your professional career: perky. In my opinion, these images contribute to a lack gravitas. Furthermore, while it is important to play to ones strengths (and warmth and accessibility are certainly two of yours) in closing with a thanks for tuning in and the 'hope' that we will be back the next night, makes you appear insecure. A confident concluding wrap-up that communicates you look forward to sharing the news with us the next night and expect us to be back would be a stronger statement. The fact that a woman is in one of 3 senior anchor positions presents its own stand-alone statement and should not be diluted with informal embellishments.

Hi Katie,

I haven't been able to watch you on my tv at home but I absolutely LOVE the simulcasts! I have watched you on my laptop live several times which I wasn't able to do with the Nightly News on their podcasts. I watched you the entire time you hosted the Today show. I love your upbeat personality and your candor. You have a true gift for connecting with your viewers.

I will be watching and praying for your success.

Blessings,

Katie,

You report the news and if all news isn't good, you have a way that I have a relaxed feeling watching and the 30 mins goes so fast and I think the Free Speech section is good because, you don't give me the feeling that some may, sit down and shut up, we'll tell you everything you need to know.

Congratulations!!!! I've always love seeing you on the Today show. When I learned that you were going to sit in as the anchor person for CBS evening news .... I was so very happy for. I wish I am still in the States to enjoy watching you nightly.

Hi Ms. Katie,

I enjoy your fresh approach to presenting the evening news. I am sure you will find your own nitch in the way you present the news in a few weeks and we will all accept and continue to look forward to what you are accomplishing. Good Luck!

Am I the only one who hasn't forgotten Katie's passion is clearly the news, and her decision to move to CBS and take on a new job was probably NOT influenced by wardrobe details? Sorry, but it really aggravates me. All along, it has been made clear that her motivation for making this change was for the opportunity to be apart of serious journalism and present news that really affects people. Yet, all anybody can focus on is something so insignificant as a hairstyle.

"Hey, correct me if I'm wrong, but there's a war going on somewhere.. I think... But oh my GOD, Katie, what are you wearing?"

Please. This was never meant to be like the Today show. You want to gaze at icons for good fashion choices? Two words: Project Runway.

I don't understand why so many people have a problem with the last 1-2 minutes of the show being more casual (I've actually read complaints about her sitting on the desk!). Seriously people, you need to chill out. (I would hate to go through life that serious about everything - talk about stuffy. Some of you must have the peronality of a napkin!) Personally, that's what I like the best about the whole broadcast. It's the time when we get to see the more relaxed, charming, caring Katie that we all know and love. It seems to me that some people on here would rather see a robot report the news. From what I gather they don't want anyone to show any type of emotion. They seem to prefer someone who is stiff with no personality. I find it refreshing to watch the show now. For 25 years I didn't watch evening news because it was soooo drab and boring. Now it has personality to it, and that's what will keep viewers coming back. Great job Katie, keep up the good work!
