Word of the Day: Gravitas

When Katie was a kid, her dad -- a journalist -- used to ask the Couric children to come to the dinner table every night with a new word.

When it was announced that Katie would have a blog here at CBS, she thought it would be a great idea to resurrect that custom. The "Couric & Co." team has been hard at work, poring over dictionaries and ancient scrolls.

And after considerable digging, we've found our first word of the day: gravitas .

gravi-tas (grav'i tas) - n. Reserved dignity; properiety and good taste in behavior and speech, as of a leader or official.
That's all well and good. But personally, I prefer Katie's own definition.

After hearing that word a few times too often this summer, and hearing naysayers carp that it was something she needed, she finally decided: "I'm convinced gravitas is just Latin for testicles."

Great work, Katie. Excellent first broadcast. I have never been an Evening News watcher (on any network) but you've just turned me into one. Great job!

Spectacular idea, Miss Couric.
That line deserves a place in the quote books.

Tonight's show was good. Nice interview.

Katie,

I have watched CBS my entire adult life-- I watch for the daily news not a magazine. If you are indeed the managing editor, please, more real news. The opinion/special interest pieces (at least 3 tonight) belong on a magazine-- Sunday Morning for instance. Very disappointing. I'll be watching the rest of this week hoping things inprove.

NOTE: Friedman is very interesting, but his opinions are not news-- they belong in a magazine format-- ditto with the Speak Freely segment-- and snapshots?!?! Please-- this is not a morning infotainment show.

Bravo! You have no doubtably convinced thousands of viewers that you can make the transition from morning host to evening anchor.

Your anchor is raised and your ship has sailed! Thank you for having the courage to do so. It is to all our benefits.

I had the good opportunity to be an intern at NBC-4 Washington several years ago, and position myself for a place in the news business. It was a rare opportunity for a poor black boy from Alabama. As, I contemplate history changing and the people who have done it - you Ms. Couric have found a place. I watched the Today show and had no doubt that your ability to adapt would carry you well in this new position. It gives hope to those of us that one day, God willing, will be able to have a position of such great responsibility. Your job today was impeccable and I give you the much deserved "props" you are due. I will continue to watch and know that the "gravitas" don't have to always be anatomically assigned.

Katie,
I am so proud of you, my sister. I feel as though I have known you all of my life and I am so proud of you. You were 'magnificent' today to say the least. Maybe we have a chance to break bread together one day. Love you much!!! Keep it up girl> Gwen

I found this to be quite disturbing. What I saw was not the evening news. I turn on the news to get "Just the Facts, Jack." Instead, we get the opinions of some unknown individual.

If I want deeper insight, I will watch another news show like 60 minutes.

The segment "Free Speech" is completely unnecessary and a waste of time. Why not a longer segment on international issues?

Couric seems like she has made it her mission to educate us. How arrogant.

I enjoyed Bob Schieffer immensely. You should have left him there.

You have lost me as a viewer.

It was a great show. Have never watched CBS news till tonight. You keep up the good work and I will be watching every night. I loved the way it was formated.

Your comment about closing statement could just be, " See you later and goodnight" , just keep it simple.

Thanks again and Good Luck,

Wayne

Being a CBS news watcher since 1969, I did find tonights broadcast "fresh" and new. I think though, the nightly news should be at least 45-60 mins. long. With everything happening in the world 30 mins. is not enough. Good luck and great job.

By the way, Ms. Couric, you have no "gravitas." It was difficult to follow you as you went from one story to the next with poor transitionary speech. You are monotone and quite frankly annoying.

Congratulations Katie! Fresh, informative, thought provoking are just a few words I would use to describe tonights broadcast. I enjoyed it immensely. I know you and your team will be "tweaking" the format and I look forward to the new and exciting contributions you will make to CBS.

Good job, Katie. You're new to me because I never watch the morning shows, but I'll sure watch you now. "Good night" is always an appropriate sign-off, and I don't care what you wear. (For cryin' out loud, fellow viewers!)

Katie:

The story about the Taliban was a bold lead, and bolder still was the time devoted to it. Nice to watch a news program that treats me like an adult with an attention span of more than 3 seconds.

And it's great to have you back on the air. Keep up the great work!

I enjoyed what I was able to watch last night. I like the free speech segment. Will you have non actors speak? I agreed with him, btw. I loved your definition of the word. Why is it that men can be overweight and have gray hair, but a woman doesn't dare. Why can men wear a suit and tie and the only thing that changes is the color of the tie? Keep being yourself!! I love it! I just wish it were longer than 30 minutes.

Some suggestions:

Drop "Free Speech". That segment served no purpose. Her choice of picking that idiot from "Super Size Me" was really poor. It's also idiotic that she's going to have Rush Limbaugh on Thursday. He already gets more free speech than he deserves on his radio show.

Don't cram too many stories in 60 seconds, like she did with the Steve Irwin tragedy.

You're giving air time to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' baby was also pointless.

Don't open the newscast with "Hi everyone". "Good evening" will do.

Here's a closing line for you: "I'm Katie Couric, I don't really belong here, but who gives a rip?"

Another thing: COVER UP THOSE LEGS! This isn't "Fox and Friends" with E.D. Hill.

And please Katie, report the news, not you.

There's no surer way to get the pulse on where women stand in 2006, than to observe people's reactions to a woman leading the nightly news for the first time in history. Newspapers, articles, and blogs all seem to be saying the same thing - the standard by which women are judged is far more extreme than for men. Indeed, my heart sinks every time I read a comment about what Ms. Couric wore (some like her suit, others do not). Wow - does this really matter? Ms. Couric, I can only assume that at this far-along point in your career, you've developed a thick enough skin to deal with such shallow banter about your abilities. I for one, sat riveted to the TV during your whole broadcast and was nothing short of THRILLED to see a woman as capable, smart, and assertive as you steer nighttime news into new territory. I admire the risks you're taking in trying to carve out a new space, a new format, in what has been a male dominated time slot. I loved the "Free Speech" segment, and also liked your focus on the Taliban. I'm excited to see your news show continue to unfold and break new ground. Best of luck!

How about "Good Evening, America" making my Hollywood yours.
Leave out the hard luck stories, hollywood and the commentary, and maybe we will get the news.

Really now, CBS must be just as concerned about what Katie wears since they went to the trouble to alter her "fatty" appearance in the much-talked about promo photograph. That seems to say they don't believe in her as anchor. She will have to work harder, will have to treat the news as real news, not include "news" that belongs on Entertainment Tonight. Women want women to be accepted for talent & ability, not because they have nice legs and sit on the edge of the desk. Stop tilting your head and stop swinging your legs. This is the news.

I wish to say only that "Freedom of Speech" is not a 'privilege' as you stated it was last night. A privilege is granted to a person by an authority. It can therefore be taken away again. Driving a car in most states is a privilege, and one which you can lose.

Freedom of speech, like the other freedoms enumerated in the Bill of Rights, is indeed just that; a right. One that pre-existed the US government, grated to us by our Creator and acknowledged by the Founding Fathers as such. It cannot be taken away (legally) by the US federal government, and hence, it is not a 'privilege'.

The distinction, though subtle, is not minor.

Thank you for your time.

Katie,

So glad to have you back on the air. I found the new format that you delivered for CBS last night ground breaking.

I look forward to this transition for CBS.

I must share this with you,Katie. My Dad, kept your birthday in his book with all our family birth dates. He considered you family! He thought you were "a real person".

I wish you continued success, we will be watching.

Best Regards.

Hi Katie, I just wanted to say that I enjoyed your segment of the evenning news. I must say that I never watched CBS news because I don't get home until 6:30pm and I usually try to catch my city news. Since you are on now I will rush home to watch CBS news, by the way the way you signed off on Tuesday and Wednesday was just fine you don't need to change a thing. Just be yourself and your fans will continue to love you. God Bless!

I gotta give Katie a lot of credit. Bulldogs may have their place in the "media," but they often get tangled up in the flowers, too. I was a reporter for my local newspaper and I'd get nervous interviewing the high school principal for crying out loud. You're allright, girl.
My sign-off suggestion i emmailed yesterday is "that's our world today, enjoy yours tonight."
Keep up the good work and to heck with the old dogs.

Good job, Katie! Good to have you a part of my daily routine again, albeit later in the day. I enjoyed beginning my day with you for 15 years, and am still getting used to you surrounded by the CBS logo and colors. You're doing a bang up job! I'm glad you listened to your girls and made the move! You make all working and non-working women proud. You go girl!
