Axelrod Responds To White House Criticism

The White House today issued two press releases criticizing media organizations. One criticizes the economic coverage of The New York Times, charging that the paper “continues to ignore America’s economic progress.” The other criticizes last night’s report on President Bush’s Medicare push by CBS News’ Chief White House Correspondent Jim Axelrod.

It seemed unusual to me for the White House to issue an actual press release criticizing news coverage. But, according to CBS White House Correspondent Bill Plante, it's something the White House began doing during the push on Social Security reform and has done with increasing frequency since. As for today's release on CBS' coverage, you can read it all here. Among the complaints the White House had with Axelrod’s “Evening News” story are:

  • CBS News Misleadingly Reports That Only 8 Million Seniors Have Signed Up For Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage.

  • CBS News Cites Poll Showing "Less Than 40 Percent Of Seniors Have Enrolled In The Program." (CBS' "Evening News," 5/9/06)...

But 37 Million Beneficiaries With Coverage Means Almost 90 Percent Of All Eligible Beneficiaries Now Are Either Enrolled In Medicare Drug Plans Or Have Other Sources Of Coverage.

  • CBS News Claims There Are "Still Some 7 Million Eligible Seniors Without Drug Coverage." (CBS' "Evening News," 5/9/06)...

But There Are Only About 5.7 Million Seniors Who Still Need To Be Enrolled. Of the 5.7 million people remaining, most (about 3 million) qualify for the low-income subsidy and therefore can enroll after the May 15 deadline.

  • CBS News Says Enrolling "Can Be A Confusing Process." (CBS' "Evening News," 5/9/06)

But There Are Just Three Simple Steps To Getting Drug Coverage Now....

  • CBS News/New York Times Poll Shows 81 Percent Of Seniors Think The Medicare Enrollment Deadline Should Be Extended. (CBS' "Evening News," 5/9/06)

But Almost 90 Percent Of All Eligible Beneficiaries Now Are Either Enrolled In Medicare Drug Plans Or Have Other Sources Of Coverage.
  • In an e-mail, Axelrod responded:
Very simply, the White House is cutting and pasting to make a point, something they accuse their critics of doing constantly. I am clearly talking about the "final push" Mr. Bush is making on Medicare. The pictures we show at the time I say "8 million already signed up," clearly refer to an appearance the president is making to make sure people understand the deadline is fast approaching for the Medicare prescription drug benefit. I took information provided to me directly by the Medicare administrator's office about the number of people signed up so far in their push, and relayed it.

The White House takes issue with our reporting, "less than 40 percent of seniors have enrolled in the program".. stating that "90% of eligible beneficiaries" have coverage. However they don't reference the next sentence in my story:

Narration/Graphics [script]: “The latest CBS News-New York Times poll shows less than 40% of seniors have enrolled in the program – and nearly half say they don’t plan to, mostly because they have other prescription coverage.”

Nearly half say they don't plan to, mostly because they have other prescription coverage. That sounds like selective editing on the part of the White House to make their own political points.

Another point made by the White House is that we report "enrolling can be a confusing process." Is that really such a controversial statement when 75% of seniors polled say the new Medicare drug plan is difficult to understand?

I am always open to criticism and believe we should be as transparent as possible in how we put together our reports, especially on such important issues as Medicare, but if the White House has a point to make, perhaps they should furnish the full and proper context for everything that is broadcast.
    More Axelrod:
The 8 million already signed up number is in no way contradicted by the 37 million seniors who already have coverage. But most were automatically enrolled. That is separate and apart from the seniors who needed to sign up – of which the Medicare administrator’s office told me – came to 7 million because they had already signed up 8 million.

Again, the White House is clearly manipulating what I broadcast to fit their agenda. And they are wrong to do that.

this administration has one mantra there will be no dissent well how do you do that Herr Karl? intimidate those possible with whatever threat works, buy anyone for sale, those who can't be bought or threatened discredit. all the while using Fox news to marginalize the media as a whole through outright lies and simple repetition. when you think of it there are only maybe a few thousand journalists with any kind of national voice so it's not undoable as the last six years have made obvious. fundamentalist greed is out to get you. big pharma didn't write this bill just so a bunch of geriatrics could afford their medicine, they were jealous of haliburton getting billions that could have been theirs. and now it is......................

It sounds like Jim Axelrod is a little bit sensitive to criticism. But then he turns around with an agenda of his own against the White House. Too bad that he can dish it out, but can't take it...

It's so nice to see you not capitulate to intimidation. The truth will out...

The White House wants us to believe that Axelrod is not stating what is obvious; some seniors are not enrolling because the program is needlessly complex. Mr Bush will not extend the enrollment deadline because Bush believes the deadline forces seniors to act. Too bad the deadline strategy is not attempted in Iraq.

Tony Snow and McClellan serve as Bush PR men and do the Jekyll and Hyde thing with the press (somewhat cynically) as a job description-- alternating between glee club boosters and attack dogs-- so this is nothing new. But while GOP partisans like to pretend this arrangement is only "fair", they are the same bozos first to point a finger at the slightest hint of critical thinking from the press. And it enrages them when the critical thinking is also accurate. They want it both ways, it appears, and who are we to insist they be consistent? (We already have given up hope they will be honest.) Kudos to Axelrod for being more assertive and critical, where the truth is served. Bush pushes his so-called "benefits" to the senior plan like the fine print in a bad insurance policy. ("Don't worry! Trust me, and sign... here!) Of course Bush doesn't want to delay the deadline-- no con artist wants his victim to think. Fortunately, many seniors who once favored Bush are beginning to do exactly that.

PS-- Should we also pity the 37 million seniors, most of whom were automatically enrolled in the Bush plan? Essentially, they had no chance to review anything-- they were put into the cattle chutes and pushed. Theirs is hardly a statement of rational choice or an endorsement of the Bush plan by any stretch of the imagination. It also has been documented that the Bush-sponsored information line for seniors was actually giving them faulty information! No wonder there is confusion about the fine print. No confusion about Bush intentions, however.

The White House's trasparent statistics legerdemain only makes the white House look more and more foolish and is fooling no one. The White House strategy of stacking lies upon lies to hoodwink the public hasn't been working lately. A government press release is not going to fool savvy seniors, who have been around long enough to know the score. Seniors will not swollow that forty choices with differing prices and coverage levels for different drugs was the right way to go. It is just another example of government ineptitude, the FEMAization of Medicare. The Axlerod hatchet job looks more pathetic then menacing. The "reality based community", a slippery genie that cannot be put back in the bottle, is back in business even among core conservatives. It's time for a new political party to emerge, a Ross Perot movement without the big ears or the big ego.

Memo to Jim Axelrod: there is nothing funnier than a TV reporter telling the White House that they ought to put the full and proper context of an issue out in their media critiques. And I suppose CBS is applying the "full and proper context" standard when it calls domestic-to-foreign terrorist surveillance "domestic spying" in their stories and graphics...

Face it alphaa10: Bush is nothing even remotely similar to Hitler, but you're obviously too stupid to know the difference. CBS, like a lot of the MSM, is intent on destroying the presidency, and they are simply getting called on it. Freedom of the press does not mean freedom from criticism. Who, in their right mind would assume that just because they report the news, that they are "untouchable"? Get used to it, liberals, including you, Jim Axelrod! Cut out the obvious attacks, and just state the facts. If you want an agenda, go join the DNC. Oh, and if you leak national security secrets, YOU SHOULD BE ARRESTED, TRIED, CONVICTED AND GO TO PRISON FOR A LONG, LONG TIME.

Jim, You are wrong about CBS News. It is well documented that CBS News is biased and often mistakes the facts. It is not so much what CBS reports, but what it does NOT report. I viewer of CBS News must also watch Fox News or read the Internet to get the complete story. CBS is slammed not only on the Internet but also on Fox News when CBS makes a gross error in the fact...which is often. Good thing you don't work for me.

Mr. Axelrod: So I take it from your comments that Mr. Snow is right about the 37 million figure. I must admit that after the "fake but accurate" Dan Rather National Guard scam that I am suspicious about your network. I find the Microsoft Word argument compelling and wonder why Thornburgh didn't address this issue. Many of us just want accurate reports without the spin. That's why Fox News continues to add viewers. But on the other hand, perhaps you are playing to the far left audience and will accept reductions in viewership in exchange for loyal viewers from the left (niche marketing)?
