CBS' John Roberts To Become CNN's John Roberts

(CBS)
CNN today announced that current CBS White House Correspondent John Roberts will be joining the cable news network as a Senior National Correspondent on February 20th. In a letter to CBS friends and colleagues this morning, Roberts wrote:

For nearly 14 years at the network, and two years at our Miami station, I have been a part of CBS News, and it a huge part of me. Ultimately, though, all relationships must come to an end, and regrettably, it is time to end my relationship here.

When I was a wide-eyed kid, learning the ropes at a 5 thousand watt radio station in the middle of nowhere, never in my most elaborate dreams did I imagine I would become a member of the CBS family. Just to have played a modest part in the history of this grand institution is an incredible reward.

The best part about it has been the fine people who populate this place. Whether it was war zones, natural disasters or the grind of global presidential travel, you demonstrated time and time again an unswerving commitment to excellence. Oppressive schedules and deadlines only seemed to spark a sense of drive and determination that sometimes appeared superhuman. Unending days and nights in the field or in the studio, covering some of this generation's most important stories brought out the best in all of you.

It has been an amazing ride - and it is my honor to have shared it with such an extraordinarily talented and dedicated group of individuals. So much of who I am as a person is an amalgam of experience and influence working with this industry's top professionals, for which I am truly thankful. There was never a day, during my entire tenure here, that I didn't learn something from you.

Leaving CBS News will be difficult - no question. The ache of anxious anticipation has been gnawing away at me for some time now. It's not just the thought of leaving behind the comfort of familiar surroundings. It's about the many colleagues around the world whom I have come to call friends. It's about the collective pride we share to put the best product we can on the air. It's about the spirit of competition and collegiality to drive this beast across the goal line each and every night.

I truly believe that journalism is one of those "higher callings" - and I will feel forever blessed that I had the opportunity to spend the lion's share of my career at CBS.

My sincerest regards to all of you - with the highest measure of respect.

John Roberts
Due to his prominent role at CBS News, Roberts was often the subject of our interest here at Public Eye and we would like to thank him for his willingness and openness in participating with us. You can see a sample of that here.

It must hurt the confidence and the psyche of good news anchor material like Russ Mitchell and John Roberts when Sean McManus shamelessly says that there are no competent anchors within CBS to fill Dan Rather's shoes. Why wasn't CBS grooming them to take the position all this time. Mitchell especially was deliberately held back, it would seem. It is a poor reflection of CBS to bypass their own. If I wanted to look at Katie Couric, I would be part of the NBC family and not CBS's for all these years.

The best of luck to you John ... It's another example of companies not promoting within. Just call in on Imus once and a while.

Congratulations John! Now that you are going to CNN, I'll be able to see you more than 2 minutes each night. You did a fine job at CBS and this is their loss. Not only have they lost you as a reporter, but lost me as a viewer. Again, congratulations and good luck in your new and exciting job! Katie Couric........what a joke!

you are making a mistake letting John Roberts go to CNN. He would have been an excellent choice for anchor for the evening news. Katie Couric would be the worst choice. If you keep going farther left I suppose all my news viewing will be on Fox News.

Good luck for John Roberts going to CNN. It sure would be nice to have Dan Rather back as anchor of The CBS Evening News. I did feel John Roberts would've made a good CBS Evening News anchor though During the Hurricane Katrina Coverage that John Roberts reporting. It would have been nice if John Roberts teammed up with The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore & those CBS News Correspondants teamed up with The Weather Channel during that Hurricane coverage. I think that would've been great work for John Roberts with his CBS News Career.

This is a loss for CBS. And I have hope that the permanent resident of The Chair won't be named Katie. The question is... we're used to the 'tribute' package when a long-time anchor or correspondent leaves. But how will this be addressed, since this is one of the biggest names to jump ship in the news industry? Nothing seems to mention his last day, and it seems strange that he doesn't have a non-compete clause in his contract... hmm...

You guys made a huge mistake in passing Roberts over for anchor. Like other posters below, I am a longtime viewer of the CBS Evening News (ever since I was a kid, and to even *think* about Katie Couric as anchor is a slap in the face of Edward R. Murrow and others. Guess I'll be watching CNN.

This is a sad day for CBS. John Roberts is one of the best in the business, and he will be greatly missed. I am an avid supporter of the CBS Evening News, but I cannot believe they are not giving the anchor role to Roberts. He has earned it. Katie Couric?! Are you serious? Bob, please stay on as anchor.

Good luck, Mr. Roberts! CNN will be better with you there and CBS will suffer for having not given you a larger role at the network.

Good for you, John! Dan Rather was a long-time favorite of mine, but as much as I hated to see him go, I was glad there was at least someone else I liked poised to step into his place. Unfortunately, that never happened, and now they're losing you, too. Their mistake is CNN's windfall, in my opinion. You've always seemed a consummate professional, and still personable and likeable enough to invite into my living room every evening. You will be missed... but only as long as it takes to flip the channel to CNN. Best of luck at your new job! Trish Bennett (CBS News viewer since the Cronkite days)

Are you crazy? You have one of the most prestigous anchor's in the business and you're letting him go? AND thinking of Katie Couric? The Queen of fluff and stuff? I am a loyal CBS news fan but you can count me OUT! We'd take Walter Cronkite on his deathbed before another vaceous "pretty face"! Edensmom

John, Your written "goodbye" reflected the passion you have for your profession, the appreciation for what CBS enabled you to accomplish, and the class that you have always displayed. CNN's tremendous gain is CBS's tremendous loss. Ironically, there was time when Ted Turned wanted to merge his CNN with CBS. The "Eyes" at the top feared that would be the end of the Tiffany Network. Who knows, maybe it would have worked... In any case, we wish you the best of luck at CNN, and perhaps more importantly, we will be watching for your reports!

One of the few remaining at CBS who appears to have more than one or two years of life, and you guys let him go. How stupid must one be in order to run CBS. What was once the Premium news service will shortly be joining the list of have beens. Replace everyone in charge at CBS and start over, the present course can't seem to be very enriching. Time to reinvent! Either that or let the Fox Networks succeed in driving us to get all our news from the internet.
