Inside The “Evening News,” Filling Out The Lineup Card

Public Eye has taken you into the “Evening News” control room and the “Early Show” control room. We’ve even shown you the CBS News morning editorial meeting where CBS executives and producers discuss the news you’ll see each evening, morning and into the future. Now you get to see a lineup meeting, where evening news producers gather to begin the process of putting together a show.

There is plenty of competition to get onto the newscast and much of it takes place before the lineup meeting. But it is here where the decisions begin to solidify and the broadcast starts to take shape. Today was an especially busy news day with a full menu to choose from. There is talk about whether or not to cover Saddam Hussein’s trial even though the accused refused to show up. Anchor Bob Schieffer made a compelling case for explaining how it was Saddam was able to simply refuse. There is talk about where to place President Bush’s speech and a new CBS poll and whether or not some Republican House leadership wrangling should make the show. There’s explanation of an interesting story on the Egyptian elections, a package on the MTV generation of soldiers and lots of talk about the war in Iraq.

Click on the video and find out the answers to these questions and get a first-hand look at how these issues are discussed between Schieffer, Executive Producer Jim Murphy and the rest of the “Evening News” editorial team. The lineup discussed in the meeting is subject to constant change as news develops throughout the day. This video has not been edited in any way other than to add chyrons to identify those involved. It’s an unprecedented look at a small part of the process that goes into putting together a network newscast. The video runs just about 20 minutes.

UPDATE: In case you're wondering why the shooting at the Miami airport did not come up in the meeting, there's a simple explanation: The meeting took place this morning, and news of the shooting did break until the afternoon.

Great insite into news meeting.. Would be a good tutorial for the little newsies around the country in preparing for their daily newscast to see how it's done--with ideas; lively debate and insight.

Thank you, CBS News, for all the good journalism that you do. Seeing the video of the lineup meeting makes me wish all the more that you had an hour of air time each night. Thirty minutes is not enough, especially in this era of longer commercial breaks. I realize that many affiliates would prefer to air "Wheel of Fortune" at 7:00 P.M. -- but have you considered producing a second half hour of "Evening News" for those stations that care about serving in the public interest?

Along with American war casualties we wonder if you're keeping track of the Iraqi men, women, and children murdered by terrorists in that country, including the bomb-strapped boys and girls they are sending on these dreadful errands.

CBS News has been very good...got hooked after watching Willie Nelson sowing soy bean fuel into his tour bus I think it was..But when they come on that the end to say that CBSNews.com is "brought to you in part by Wal Mart", couldn't they change that to some other sponsor? I'd like to see the "other" sponsors.

Fascinating look at how you do your work! Thanks! Now how about going on the set to show us all the stuff that swirls around Bob Schieffer during the newscast?

Much like Iseller, I tried the link after hearing the news cast. Good stuff. By the way, good choice with Schieffer for evening news. I couldn't watch Rather when he was on and since Brokaw left NBC I'm back to CBS.

I watched CBS evening news tonight and was pleasantly surprised of the information regarding the videos from Iraq. They were great and you should have more of this so we can see how the real troops are doing. As a Vietnam veteran I'm sure the guys/girls would appreciate it. Thank you, George

I saw a short intro for the Public Eye on the news this evening and went to the web after the news to check it out. I watched the video and found it most interesting to see how you put things together. Thanks for bringing us into the other side. I look to CBS news first thing in the morning both locally and nationally and then again after work in the evening.
