Does Paul's Iowa delegate sweep indicate brighter days ahead for libertarians?

(CBS News) Ron Paul backers on Saturday notched yet another state delegate win in Iowa, proving - despite their hero's concession that he will not be the Republican presidential nominee - they're not going anywhere.

After what the Des Moines Register described as a "two-day tug-of-war marked by bouts of angry shouting," Paul supporters walked away with 23 of 28 total delegates to send to August's Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

All are unbound, but senior Paul adviser Doug Wead told CBS News that their delegates will be respectful of Mitt Romney as the party's nominee, and won't "cause trouble or stir anything up."

Wead pointed out that while official numbers coming out of the Iowa state convention are new, the Texas Congressman's delegate win there was established in January on the night of the Iowa caucus: "You read all these stories saying we're flooding state conventions or stealing delegates that belong to Romney, and it's just absurd," he said. "You can't flood a convention; these delegates were elected to attend."

While Paul came in a distant third in Iowa's January caucus behind Rick Santorum and Romney, his famously loyal supporters led a concerted effort there and in many other states to stick around their precincts until voting ended, when the delegates would be selected.

"The movement is energized," Wead said of Paul backers, who generally share their leader's libertarian views. "Dr. Paul's message is resonating with more and more people all the time - it's why they're willing to go sit around at these conventions all day and out-stay the establishment."

That energy, Wead said, could transfer to Paul's son Rand, the Republican Senator from Kentucky. And if Rand decides to follow in his father's footsteps and run for president in 2016 (as Wead believes he will), "he's in a much better place to do it because of Dr. Paul's campaign this time around," he said.

"How Romney won the nomination this year was having people in his corner who could actually make decisions and impact the election," Wead said. "John McCain won the nomination in 2008, but Mitt Romney had a whole lot of people who liked him, and some of those people were put on the rules committee."

Citing A.J. Spiker, former vice chair of Paul's Iowa campaign who now chairs the Iowa GOP, Wead said the tide's now turning in the Paul clan's direction.

"Put it this way," he said. "It's not always the coaching, it's the recruitment. And going forward, Paul supporters are going to be sitting on committees. They're going to be the ones making decisions. This shift is organic; we're not leading the charge, we're just riding the wave."

Ron Paul got 22% of the vote in Iowa, only 3% behind the winner. How is that a 'distant' third? He was a distant second in New Hampshire, but he was a close third in Iowa

Smokey 5%? FYI, Doctor was the projected WINNER for Iowa back in early January as substantiated by EVEN FOX NEWS! On the afternoon of the election he was FAR IN THE LEAD, when the precincts began reporting, then the media SHUT DOWN! Suddenly hours went by with no updates, THEN when they did update, Doc Paul was losing horribly...In the end it all went dark in Iowa, and it took them days to manipulate Mitts win; then it was overturned and handed to Rick, and ultimately the truth rings true! NOW try looking up the following: Nevada, Minnesota, Maine, Colorado, Louisiana, and Oklahoma, in you will find it is MITT who has 5% of those delegates! As for MItt or BO option, (many arguing we may help BO win second term),,,face it! we don't care, MR and BO are the same, we'd rather vote Ron Paul and hopefully win, and if not, take our chances w/ another 4 more of BO than 8 with Mitt! BO= MR = more debt and more war! we want no MORE!

Smokey: I support Ron Paul, and have since 1988. So by your definition, I am an idiot. By your definition, anyone supporting Ron Paul is an idiot.

Like most detractors, you utilize insults and slander to make points, which are only points of false opinion. You have backed up nothing you have said with any facts.

I guess all of the smart people support Goldman Sachs, because they win regardless whether Mitt or Barack wins. Heads they win, tails we lose. he is actually the only one who has stated a plan to shore up SS, using the peace dividend, have you not heard or seen that? Saving us a trillion by pulling out of wars that benefit only Wall Street and war profiteers and closing bases that were built post-WW2 that serve no real purpose now seems radical? We are so spread out now, we have no real national defense, we are too busy nation building and being the world cop. We can only borrow so much from China (or printing more money) until they pull the plug, which will then end our military adventurism anyway.

I say endless wars slaughtering our soldiers and innocent foreign civilians is radical. I say borrowing and spending until our economy collapses is radical.

I say shutting down government departments that drain our resources while providing no benefit(Dept of Ed)is smart and fiscally prudent. I say the pursuit of peace, prosperity and a return to constitutionality is very sane. Your perceptions have been successfully crafted to fit the agenda that big lackey media has propagated. You are one of their success stories. Congrats.

As far as Paul turning us into a 3rd world nation, we are already rushing headlong in that direction. It is actually what Constitutional Republicans ("Paulbots") would like to avoid.

Brighter days will come for the country when the "mainstream" media stops manipulating news through omission of news and other deceiving tactics used. They use to be the watch dog for the country; they reported government corruption. Now they're the lap dog with an agenda. We no longer have fair elections due to the media's manipulation of news.

To Smokey_75: "illuminating" SS? What are you even talking about? Learn to spell correctly. Also the fact that you think the "majority" of people are "sane" is laughable. If society was truly sane, we wouldn't have allowed this unthinkable economy, these disgustingly illegal wars and nation-building in the Middle East, drones being used on us, the concept that we need to trade in our guns for Wal*Mart gift cards, I could go on and on. No, society and the "majority" of people are not sane....in fact we are a Nation of sheep allowing ourselves to be led around by too-good-to-be-true promises made by empty suits, the Elite, and warmongering statists. Your argument is invalid.

Replying to smokey_75: Your premise of 5 percent of the vote is laughable. You obviously have not been following the numbers. So, the rest is nonsense. You are all opinion and no facts.

Rand blew his chances when he endorsed Mitt Romney (and before, when he voted for sanctions against Iran, spoke in favor of a federal ban on gay marriage and said that people who attend certain rallies should be deported, among other things). If the movement is going to anyone, it's probably Justin Amash.

Besides, who knows if in 2016 the country won't be beyond salvation? Economic apocalypse is coming.
