A hunter is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after being shot by his dog on Saturday.

The Merced County Sheriff's Department said the 53-year-old man was hunting with a partner off Highway 152 near Los Banos when he set down his shotgun to retrieve his decoy ducks.

The shotgun was loaded but the safety was on, according to authorities.

The victim was about 15 yards away, retrieving his decoys, when his female black Labrador retriever stepped on the gun.

Authorities said the dog disengaged the safety and hit the trigger at the same time, firing a shell with #2 shot. The man was struck in on the left side of his upper back.

The man was treated and released at the hospital the same day.

A prime example of someone not following gun safety/hunting safety and qualifies him for honorable mention in the Darwin awards!

LOL! If you know of many cases, then all I can say is there are an awful lot of dumb hunters out there. Do they not teach hunter safety in all states?

Now for the real story. The dog belonged to the other hunter. The dog was in a boat and they were picking up decoys. There was still a wunded bird in the water that they needed to get. The gun should have been unloaded but it wasen't. How many times have you gone back to your truck, set your loaded gun on the tailgate and got a drink of water. Same thing could happen. Some of the comments tells me that we have some tree huggers in the group that hate guns and hunters. It's not really a joke when a person could get killed from a hunting accident. The key word is accident.

Well this is not the first time this has happened. I remember several years ago, a dog stepped on a shotgun and shot his master.

Dick Cheney was shot by a friend. This guy was shot by man's best friend. People who shoot you are not your friends. I hate Dick Cheney. Dick Cheney is a dog with no friends.

Amazing, 11 comments and not ONE from a sentient being. Obviously not one of the commentors has spent any time in the field. Let alone with a weapon. The hunter violated safety protocols, as usual he has paid a price. End of story. This is not even news worthy. It happens all the time. Go back to watching Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy or Ophra.

Realy? I have never been shot by my dog, or any one else I know. Or been stabbed, run over, poisened, prank called, or tickled. My dog must be lazy or too dumb. Tomorrow I'm going to leave a Super Soaker squirt gun out on the ground near him and turn my back. If I don't get hit, I'm getting a new dog.

I betcha that it was the PARTNER that shot him, and they are covering it up and saying the dog did it.

Typical male. They always gotta blame someone or something else for their screwups. : )

Erasmus said "I betcha that it was the PARTNER that shot him, and they are covering it up and saying the dog did it."!~ Not really. I know of many cases in which a dog shot the gun owner. I don't think dogs like gun owners. "Accidental gunshot wounds are common during South Dakota's pheasant hunting season. And now a Minnesota man is recovering from a shotgun blast to the ankle that was set off by a dog. It happened Saturday south of Keldron just outside the North Dakota border. Michael Murray of Brooklyn Park was part of a group of hunters that had just returned to their vehicles. They put their shotguns on the ground and lined up for a picture when one of the dogs stepped on a gun and it went off." SEE!~
