At least two tornadoes were reported in Southwest Michigan amid severe weather earlier on Friday, according to CBS Detroit's Chief Meteorologist Ahmad Bajjey. The tornadoes were reported in Union City (Branch County) and Three Rivers (St. Joseph County), while a possible third tornado may have also been in St. Joseph County.

Cass County officials later confirmed that a tornado touched down near Edwardsburg.

The tornadoes caused significant damage, including destroying a roof on a Menards store in Three Rivers, as well as trees, homes and pole barns in Cass County. According to Consumers Energy, more than 3,000 customers are without power as of 9 p.m. on Friday.

Consumers Energy says crews are on site in Union City and are "setting up a mobile command center in Union City to help coordinate our response." The utility company says it hopes to restore power overnight.

"Our hearts are with our friends and neighbors who are affected by today's tornado, and we will help the community any way we can. We are in touch with the American Red Cross and have offered to assist them as they set up a community shelter," the company said in a statement. "We continue to follow these ongoing severe weather conditions, with the prospect more storms could strike Michigan tomorrow."

Consumers urge residents to follow these safety tips:

Be alert to crews working along roads. Drivers should slow down or stop and wait for oncoming traffic to clear so they can go safely past.

Stay at least 25 feet away from downed power lines and report unguarded downed lines by calling 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050. Consumers Energy reminds people that falsely calling in downed lines actually slows down the restoration process for everyone.

Never use a generator in an attached garage, basement, enclosed patio or near any air intakes. Doing so could cause a generator to produce hazardous levels of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and deadly gas.

Damage is seen at Menard's store after a severe storm in Three Rivers, Mich., Friday, March 6, 2026.
As the United States turns 250 years old in 2026, CBS News Chicago is looking at how Chicago has influenced American sports.

Chicago's first documented professional sports team was founded in 1870. The Chicago White Stockings, who eventually became the Chicago Cubs, not the White Sox, were a charter member of the Natonal League of Professional Baseball Clubs.

Since then, it's been decades of heartache offset by pockets of championship glory, and some of the most pivotal figures in American sports history.

"You can't talk about sports in America without talking about Chicago," said Chicago Tribune columnist Paul Sullivan, who has spent more than four decades chronicling the city's vast sports scene.

Legendary Chicago Bears owner George Halas was one of the founding fathers of the NFL.

"The Bears, obviously. Papa Bear basically invented pro football," Sullivan said.

The Bears were born as the Decatur Staleys in 1920, but Halas built the NFL charter franchise into the Monsters of the Midway in Chicago. From Dick Butkus to Brian Urlacher and Gale Sayers to Walter Payton, the Bears have the largest collection of Pro Football Hall of Famers. And no single team captivated the nation like the iconic 1985 Bears, who won Super Bowl XX under legendary coach Mike Ditka.

"Yeah, I mean, Ditka is ... he just transcended everything, and obviously, the Saturday Night Live skit, the Super Fans thing helped spread that thing," Sullivan said.

The Cubs once had the country's longest-suffering fan base, enduring the "Curse of the Billy Goat, the 1969 "Black Cat Game," and the "Bartman Ball" in 2003, but the North Siders finally shook their "Lovable Losers" label in 2016, ending the franchise's over-century-long championship drought.

Between the 1919 Black Sox scandal and the 2005 World Series title, two-time White Sox owner Bill Veeck was a sports marketing pioneer, literally adding fireworks to the fan experience with the first exploding scoreboard at the original Comiskey Park.

Before the dynamic duo of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews led the Blackhawks to a trio of Stanley Cup titles in the 2010s, hockey legends Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita starred for the "Original 6" franchise during the rough and tumble days of the NHL in the 1960s and 70s. And there's nothing like the rip-roaring rendition of the national anthem at the Madhouse on Madison.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray made singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" a staple at Wrigley Field. The 7th inning stretch tradition actually started on the South Side, when Caray was broadcasting for the White Sox in the 70's.

Michael Jordan is immortalized atop the Mt. Rushmore of Chicago sports superstars. "His Airness" elevated the city on the global stage, with the Bulls soaring to six championships during the electrifying 90s dynasty.

"To this day, you still see people in other countries wearing Bulls hats, even though he's been out of the game for so long," Sullivan said. "It just permeates the whole American culture, Chicago sports. And, we're talking about is it the best sports city in America? And I think there's a good argument that it is, just because Chicago fans are so passionate and so loyal."

With the upcoming NCAA basketball tournament, it's worth noting the term "March Madness" was coined in the high school hoops hot bed of Illinois. The 1963 Loyola Ramblers remain the only team from the state to win a Division I national championship while also making history with the groundbreaking "Game of Change" that led to college basketball integration.

Activists and immigrant advocacy groups who came face-to-face with federal agents during the Trump administration's immigration crackdown known as "Operation Midway Blitz" welcomed the removal of Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security, but remain wary about the department's future.

Every Friday for several weeks, activists have visited the FBI's Chicago office on the Near West Side – among them, Baltazar Enriquez, with the Little Village Community Council.

"We're asking that they, number one, investigate the murder of Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, who was killed by an ICE agent September 12, 2025 out in Franklin Park, Illinois," Enriquez said.

Enriquez also wants deaths in Homeland Security detention centers to be investigated.

He was among rapid responders who confronted federal agents deployed by the Department of Homeland Security during "Operation Midway Blitz."

Now the person who led that effort is being replaced.

"We're happy that they got rid of Kristi Noem, but they're going to replace her with someone else, and he might be worse," Enriquez said.

President Trump removed Noem as Homeland Security Secretary this week and nominated U.S. Sen. Markwayne Mullin to replace her.

Enriquez said, even with Noem leaving, his work continues to monitor for federal agents in Chicago and prepare for future operations.

"ICE have not left. We know they're still here, and they're still kidnapping people, and our volunteers are out there patrolling from 7 in the morning to 7 at night," he said.

Other immigrant advocacy groups also said that Noem's departure is welcomed news, but they said they believe it changes very little, and they continue to push for more reform of the Department of Homeland Security.

"The damage and violence that ICE brings to our communities didn't start with Kristi Noem and it's not going to end with her departure," said Brandon Lee, communications director at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

Lee said his group continues efforts like support hotlines, rapid response teams, and rights education.

The group's advocacy work also now includes pushing elected officials to enact changes at Homeland Security.

Funding for the department lapsed in February, and Congress has been unable to agree on a deal to end the Homeland Security shutdown as Democrats and the White House remain at odds on restraints for federal immigration agents. Both sides have been going back and forth with counterproposals, though the details have not been made public. According to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, both sides are "still far apart."

"Regardless of who leads the department, we want to make sure that senators are holding the line; not another dollar for DHS unless there are real changes to the way that the agency operates," Lee said.

A Northwest Indiana man has filed a lawsuit against Valparaiso High School, the Valparaiso Community Schools district, and the City of Valparaiso, after his 15-year-old son was seriously injured during an off-season football drill.

Jason Solomon filed the negligence lawsuit on behalf of his son, Malakai, who was left with a concussion, a broken wrist, and an injured neck when he was hit during practice last month. The team was not supposed to be running full-contact drills, and no helmets were worn.

According to the lawsuit filed in Porter County, Indiana, Malakai "was forcefully pushed to the ground with excessive and unreasonable force by two other football players, contrary to the nature of the drill and accepted safety practices."

"As a result of this excessive force, [Malakai] was thrown backward, causing him to land violently and suffer severe injuries," the lawsuit adds.

The family's attorneys claim coaches failed to properly supervise the drill and enforce safety rules in order to protect players from harm, and failed to act once Malakai was injured.

"Defendants' employees, agents, and/or coaches knew or should have known that allowing players to engage in forceful physical contact against younger players in a non-contact drill without proper supervision could create a reasonable risk of unnecessary harmful contact and resulting injury," the lawsuit states.

Malakai's father has said he was only aware that light contact drills were supposed to be happening that day.

"Two kids, you know, really hit him hard, and he kind of went flying. There was no pads, no shoulder, you know, nothing, no helmet. and he braced his fall with his right wrist, and then, his head hit the ground, which is concrete with, with, like, a little bit of, padding," he said.

The lawsuit claims, after Malakai was injured, he was forced to call his father to get medical attention, including transportation to the hospital.

Malakai's father has said Malakai couldn't walk straight and was slurring words, but managed to text him. He rushed to the school and then rushed his son to the hospital, where they performed an emergency CT scan.

Since the injury, Malakai's father has said he was forced to pull his son out of school after he received threats of violence from other kids.

"Even as far as this morning, he got a message stating that, when you come back, the football team's looking to, you know, jump you," he said one week after the injury. "I just do not feel safe to have my son in that school."

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. delivered a passionate and intimate eulogy for his father, civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson, reflecting on what he believes is his real legacy in American culture.

While he opened with jokes about former presidents running long in his remarks, Jackson Jr.'s speech took a spiritual and personal turn, contemplating his father's role as civil rights fighter and hope-giver for the country.

As he told the crowd, "I want to talk about my daddy."

Read the full text of Jesse Jackson Jr.'s eulogy for his father

If I can have everyone's attention for just a moment, I promise that I'm going to bring this program to a tighter close and get us out of here at a reasonable hour.

Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, Pastor Browning, in three and a half minutes. Martin Luther King Jr delivered the I Have a Dream speech in 13 and a half minutes. If it can't be said between the Gettysburg Address and I Have a Dream, it ought not be said at all

For what remains of my time, and I promised Yousef that I would not be more than seven or eight minutes, I want to talk about my daddy.

Now, when Martin Luther King Jr died in 1968 he was an immensely unpopular figure. Brother Reynolds, Brother Sharpton, members of the Congressional Black Caucus who were present, Dr King on April 4, 1968 was immensely unpopular.

Who he is today is not who he was on April 4, 1968 and I'm sensing, Sister Parker, on this occasion that we are moving in the direction of a Jesse Jackson that I wouldn't, mama, even recognize.

Jesse Jackson at the hour of his death, was not, Roland Martin, a popular figure.

He would have stood against the war in the Gaza. He would have been fighting for the Affordable Care Act. He would be fighting to save the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and challenging the Supreme Court to render a decision in the Clay decision that would strengthen the Congressional Black Caucus and not undermine it

If you are a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and you are still here, allow us the opportunity to recognize you. Will you please stand. Members of the CBC came from around the country, and our congressional districts are under threat at this hour.

I want to try and summarize in the five minutes that I have left some of what I heard from everyone, starting with President Clinton. He said, "with head and heart."

"With Head and Heart" is the title of the autobiography written by the doctor, late Dr Howard Thurman, who dedicates his life story to simple and haunting simplicity. Mr. Mayor, he dedicates the book, and I quote this. Jonathan, "to the stranger in the railroad station in Daytona Beach, who restored my broken dream 65 years ago."

To the stranger who was Jesse Jackson

To the political class that took up most of his time, Dad was a stranger awaiting a return phone call, reminding the political class of the urgency of the hour.

That's who my daddy was.

To the economic class that Jim Reynolds talked about on Wall Street, my father had no qualifications in business or in finance, to be able to talk intelligently, initially about the transactions of Wall Street, but to them, he was the stranger.

So this story comes together in Howard Thurman's book with my final four minutes. In this way, Brother Turner, it says that Howard Thurman's sharecropping family had been gathering in the deep south all of the coins of their hard work, and they had put just enough money together to send Howard Thurman to college by buying him a train ticket.

And when he got to the train station after having loaded all of the broken pieces, Pastor Dates, into his life and of his life into a trunk, the conductor of the train told him, Judge Mathis, that he could not carry the trunk on the train unless he bought another ticket.

And so Howard Thurman went over in the corner of the train station, and he began crying, crying for the idea that after all that his family had been through, he would not mama be going to college.

And as he cried through those tears, he looked up and saw a pair of brown old rustic boots. And then he looked up and he saw a man in overalls. And he looked up and he saw a Black man, and he said, the Black man said to him, Son, why are you crying, boy?

And Howard Thurman said, because the broken pieces of my life, I cannot take with me to college, because I need a ticket.

And the old man, Sister Bryant and Reverend Bryant, reached into his pocket and pulled out a little leather sack and took some coins and went and bought Howard Thurman a ticket for his luggage.

And Howard Thurman says in the story that all he remembers is the man walking down the train tracks while he and the train were heading in the opposite direction.

Pastor Muncie, he dedicates his book to the stranger who changed the trajectory of his life by restoring his hope.

Every single person in here has a Jesse Jackson story, the time he shook your hand, the time he prayed for you, the time he held you up, the time he prayed the funeral for somebody that you know, the time he was at the hospital for you, the time, Roland, when you lost your job and he prayed you to a new a new course of existence.

Everybody has, Sister Waters, their own Jesse Jackson story.

Why? Because, according to Dr Walter Fluker, the infinite Howard Thurman scholar, he says, to Howard Thurman the stranger, watch this his preachers, the stranger was God.

Two minutes.

The stranger was God. Because he redeemed and restored the hope of Howard Thurman, a man whose name he did not know, and he sent him to college.

At the moment that he needed hope, hope showed up in the form of a stranger.

It's impossible, Roland Burris, for one man to know all of the people that Jesse Jackson has touched.

Everybody here doesn't have the number. He don't need it no more, 773-251-6353. But just about everybody in here had the number 773-251-6353.

It's a flip phone. It's analog. He didn't believe in iPhones and Samsung. He believed in a flip phone because whenever we needed, Isiah, the stranger, that's what I heard you say, when the stranger showed up in the locker room, when the stranger showed up in them projects, when the stranger showed up, the stranger came in the form and in the embodiment of Jesse Jackson.

Because he is the one, Reverend Sharpton, who we came into contact with, who restored our hope and changed. Meeks, the trajectory of our lives.

Now, I'm going to go on ahead tomorrow morning at PUSH, 930 East 50th Street. Part two of this will be there because I got enough sense to know that I've already talked too long. I want you to think about the stranger, Reverend Dyson, in your life, it's going to be a nameless, faceless person who enters your life and restores your hope.

And so, when Jesse Jackson said, I don't care what the political class says, they're only interested in high propensity voters, my father looked at the undecided, Father Pfleger, and he recognized that they lacked somebodyness, and he told them to keep hope alive. But that's not enough.

Keeping hope alive is the answer to suicidality, not only for individuals who might want to kill themselves, but for a nation on the brink of self destruction. Keep hope alive for a man or a woman getting ready to hang themselves who's given up on hope, Bishop Ellis, Reverend Jackson says they need hope, not dope.

Kevin Adell,he took the ministry from Sunday morning and he delivered it to the people.

I am somebodyness is what Jesse Jackson is known for, not the '84 and '88 campaign and voter registration. Jesse Jackson's greatest contribution is not political. It is psychological. Negro, you are better off today than you were when you met this Negro!.

So once that was put together, and I knew I had my passport and my other necessities," she said.

Rubinstein had been visiting family and friends and even timed her trip around diplomatic talks, thinking she'd be safe. As she prepared to leave for the airport on Saturday air raid sirens were followed by a phone notification that said her flight had been canceled because the airspace had been closed.

That's when she decided to find a different way home. A train and bus got her to Egypt, where she boarded a flight to Athens, then Munich, before eventually landing at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. It took her three days.

"I didn't expect that I would be overcome with emotion just walking out of the customs," Rubinstein said. "I was just standing there by myself, because I got through customs so quickly, I beat my husband there, and I just started crying."

The stay-at-home mom, who has a 2-year-old son, endured that journey while five months pregnant with twins. She said her heart is still with family and friends in Israel, and those who supported her on the journey.

"I'm just so grateful. I mean, truly, truly. Like, this was not possible without the level of community that we have around us, and I'm so immensely grateful for that," she said.

There's no relief in sight for drivers at the pump as the war in Iran is directly driving up the cost of gas. Analysts expect more of the same unless something changes soon.

In Chicago, the average price of a gallon of gas has jumped more than 34 cents in just one week. Analysts with GasBuddy expect that trend to continue.

That's a tough thing to hear if you drive for a living.

A stop at the pump is just part of the daily routine for Uber driver Maikomi Soulama.

"I just put right now $30 of gas, because I still have a little left," Soulama said.

She fills up every day, so she notices when prices change.

"The gas prices, I can say, is still high," she saidc

Matt McClain, a petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, has been busy all week tracking crude oil prices that have ticked up since the war in Iran.

"In Chicago, sitting at $3.52 a gallon on average. Prices are up about 34 cents from this point last week and about 38 cents from a month ago," McClain said. "The main, number one, absolutely without a doubt factor is the Strait of Hormuz. We need a solution to get that reopened and we need it now. And until that happens, it looks like we are going to continue to see rising prices."

About 20 percent of the world's oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, but oil tankers are diverting away from the strait to avoid danger.

It's driving up the cost of crude oil and, in turn, the cost of gasoline and especially diesel fuel.

"This is the fastest weekly increase in the last 20 years, and it's the highest since December of 2023," McClain said.

Pricier diesel means pricier everything, because so much of the shipping industry runs on diesel.

"If the prices remain elevated, I am genuinely concerned that we'll start to see prices inching up in every facet of our life, not just when we pull up to the gas pump," McClain said.

Routine is getting more expensive, and drivers like Soulama hope for relief.

"If I have to fill my tank completely, it's going to be $55," she said. "If we don't have a choice, we have to buy at this price, but we wish we can do something about it."

Analysts with GasBuddy said it's important to take things day by day, but they anticipate gas prices in Chicago could soon jump another 10 to 20 cents a gallon.

There's an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents."

Rowley said to prepare for daylight saving time, people should go to bed early Friday night.

"There's also suggestions you should be resetting when you eat meals and everything," he said.

We've seen a lot proposed here, and across the country, over the years to do away with daylight saving time.

Most recently, newly proposed legislation in Springfield would do away with daylight saving time in Illinois. House Bill 5400 would exempt Illinois from changing clocks, but with a contingency. Ending daylight saving time in Illinois would happen only after Missouri and Iowa also choose to stop changing their clocks.

"We definitely need to do it," Rowley said. "This twice-a-year change is not good for our health. It's not good for societal health."

The new legislation would make a switch to permanent standard time.

Experts, including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Illinois Sleep Society, said earlier sunsets are better for our bodies, and said ending daylight saving time is the right move.

"We need more darkness in the evening and more light in the morning to have a good night's sleep," Rowley said.

Tips to help manage the switch to daylight saving time:

Try to go to bed a little bit earlier each night — Moving your bedtime up 15 minutes each night can help minimize how long it takes to adjust

Adjust the timing of your daily routines —It can help to move up your workout or exercise class and adjust dinner time a little earlier at night. Those events are also circadian cues and adjusting them can help minimize the impact

Get bright light first thing in the morning — You may wake up before sunrise, but as soon as the sun comes up, try to eat breakfast in a well-lit area or take a walk outside to get sunlight exposure

The Cook County medical examiner later identified him as 67-year-old AC Byrd. A spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service said Byrd worked at its center in Warrendale.

After identifying him, troopers said Hillside officers contacted police from Jackson Township to request a welfare check at the man's home on Dior Drive, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Map shows distance from Hillside, Illinois, to Zelienople, Pennsylvania

Former President Bill Clinton spoke lovingly and with humor of his long friendship with Rev. Jesse Jackson at his funeral services at House of Hope in Chicago Friday.

Clinton recalled a decadeslong political and personal relationship with Jackson, starting from his time as attorney general of Arkansas and stretching through to the end of Jackson's life.

Full text of President Bill Clinton's remarks at Jesse Jackson's funeral

I'm actually going to be pretty close on time.

I think we should not forget. and Jim Zogby didn't, he did a fine job, but this is a celebration and a memorial service, and you have to ask yourself, what did Jesse Jackson do that I admire most, that moved me most? And what can I do right now that would maybe be as good as what he did?

Then that's what we're all facing here. You— I love Jackie and her family. Santita sang at my second inauguration. The boys have got to go to Congress and Yusuf. The first time I met Yusuf, I thought I could do whatever I wanted if he worked for me, he just take care of things, and you're good at it.

It's been an honor to know all of you, but I want to say something, you know, highly personal tonight, I came to truly love Jesse Jackson, and we had more in common than he thought.

We were both two guys who were born to single mothers living in the South.

And so I got to watch this guy. And frankly, the first time we met was at the 20th anniversary of the celebration of the integration of Little Rock Central High School.

And some young people may not even know why that's important, but in the 1920s that school was the most beautiful high school in America.

Then, the whole time I was governor of Arkansas, that one school accounted for 25% of our merit scholars.

You could go there and study Latin and Greek, which was a pretty big deal out in the country, in addition to all the science and math.

So they were celebrating the 20th anniversary, and Jesse showed up to help them, but he was always asking himself, so what can we use the observation of a past victory for to get something done today?

So by the late 70s, all these medium sized little towns in the middle of the country were being flooded with drugs. All these folks were facing more vigorous law enforcement on the coast, but they were coming in. And I kept thinking, I know Jesse Jackson is going to know this, and he's going to say something, and I just want to be there.

And I was a 29-year-old attorney general, and Hillary, a Chicago girl, was a J.D., she was practicing law and supporting us because the salary was almost nonexistent.

So Jesse gets up in front of this crowd of kids, and their eyes were big as silver dollars. And he said, "You owe a lot to the Little Rock Nine who integrated the school. You owe a lot to Daisy Bates and the other people who supported them. You owe a lot to the people who were there long before them. You cannot take this achievement and throw it away on drugs."

And then he said, I'll never forget it. Jesse Jackson looked at these kids, and he said, "You have to open your brains, not your veins."

And I thought to myself, no matter how long I live and stay in politics, I may never have a single line, that's that good.

I mean, think about it. It's totally brilliant. It captures personal responsibility and caring and self survival.

All these pastors here have done such a great job on this.

You know, I know you spend endless hours when you're putting your sermons together and you're running your programs in your churches and thinking, what can we do that will work?

And whenever I get discouraged, I think about Jesse and I just laugh. Well, you gotta open your brains and not your veins.

So 10 years later, I was living in the governor's mansion, and Jesse shows up for the 30th anniversary of the integration of Little Rock Central High School. By then, I become governor, and we bring all them back to the governor's mansion, because that's where Governor Faubus plotted to disenfranchise him and keep Black people out of school.

So we had a big dinner that night, and after the dinner was over, Hillary asked Jesse to hang around so we could talk. We went to the kitchen, put some more food on the counter, and talked 'till midnight.

And Hillary said, you know, we all got to work tomorrow. I'm going to bed. Two hours later, Jesse and I are still going about it, and she walks into the kitchen and throws us out.

I'll never forget it.

We did not always agree, but I'll tell you one thing, he made me a better president when I got in office, because he was always pushing on things, and he knew that change came from the outside in, and sometimes from the inside out, So he knew how to keep pushing and nagging and wearing you out.

Right? Look at Governor Pritzker laughing here. I mean, it was really, it was like having a dog to the bone. You know, he was, I said, one time when he was working on something in Africa, because I made him a special envoy for African diplomacy. I said, you know, we might ought to put Jesse on the list.

And one of my staff said, only members of Congress are on that list. I know but, I said, I think we need to put him on anyway.

So I had another guy so I said, what's the list? He said, "It's a list of people that will dog you to death until you do what they want you to do. So we just call it the 'Just Say Yes list.'"

Put it on the Just Say Yes list, it'll save you so much time, and you can go on and do something else with the rest of your day.

And I remember how impressed I was in 1988 before I became president, when Jesse negotiated with Governor Dukakis and the other people at the Democratic Convention to end the exclusive primaries, which he talked about, and the caucuses, and to open up the democratic process and add people. Including Willie Barrow and Representative Maxine Waters, who became one of our senior leaders.

I'm saying this to make another point: Everybody knows how eloquent he was, and everybody knows that he could talk an owl out of a tree, but he actually was interested in policy and specifics.

So that's the second thing I'd like to say. So what if you weren't big, tall, broad shouldered and eloquent like Jesse Jackson, if you want to make change, there's still plenty you could do. If you've got an agenda, you've got to have it. He always had an agenda.

So that's the most important thing I could say to you.

Now, one other thing I am going to say: Wordsworth. You don't think about Wordsworth when you think about Jesse, but Wordsworth said the last best hope of a good man's life for the little unremembered acts of kindness and love.

I used to think all the time about how hard Jesse's childhood must have been, you know, with his mother, and then having to go past his father's house and all that, all the mixed stuff. And I knew a little about not merely a severe situation because of my situation, and I admired his mother.

I was afraid of Jackie. I'd do whatever she said, but I love you so much. But I really liked his mother, and he called me one day, and he said, "This is purely personal, but my mother liked you, you know, and I'd really appreciate it if you would speak at her service."

And he said, "Andy Young's coming, and, you know, there aren't that many of us left anymore who are over 75 and have been through all this".

And I said I would be honored. I know this sounds funny, but it really meant something to me that he wanted me to talk at his mother's memorial service.

And then— I don't think I've ever told anybody this. When the Congress was trying to run me out and I was in that big impeachment fight, Jesse called me one night in the White House.

I thought he was calling me. He said, "I don't want to talk to you. I want you to go get Chelsea."

Keep in mind, he's got all this other stuff going on. We got he called me to talk to my daughter to make sure she had her head in the game, and he prayed with her on the phone.

And, you know, a lot of people, it would never even have occurred to them to do that. And ever since, Hillary and I went to visit Jesse in the hospital and Jackie and a lot of the family were there, I've been thinking about him calling my daughter. He didn't know if I was going to be president in six months. He didn't know what was going to happen, but he liked Chelsea.

But my point is, those are the things you remember.

So, I think we should honor him by saying, okay, maybe I'll never come up with a line like open your brain and not your veins. Maybe I'll never give a speech that will move hundreds of thousand of others, but I can do something. I can still be somebody.

And what should I do? And how can I, with whatever speaking ability I have or don't have, do what he did when he calls Bill Clinton's daughter in a crisis, when he asked a friend. I know you may be busy and my mother's not famous, but would you please come say a few words, and Andy Young and I went, but we both went and we were there.

So that's what I want all of you to think about when you leave here.

This guy lived a big life.

He lived with his head and with his heart. And God. He was faithful to the Scripture, which said, 'We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.' But unlike a lot of people in politics, he didn't go around looking down his nose at other people. He hated to sin and not to sinner. He was always trying to lift people up.

So I'm here more as a friend than a former president. He was my friend when I needed him, and I ask you to ask yourself, how you can do more by being a better friend and a more effective one. God. Bless you. Thank you.
