Wragg Fire Near Napa Valley Slows; Some Evacuations Lifted

WINTERS (CBS SF) -- State Highway 128 has reopened Friday afternoon as firefighters continue to battle a wildfire that has burned 6,900 acres in Napa and Solano counties.

The fire was first reported Wednesday at 2:24 p.m. and may have started when a vehicle crashed at 7700 State Highway 128 at Wragg Canyon Road, according to Cal Fire officials.

As of shortly before noon, the fire was 20 percent contained but still threatening 150 structures, fire officials said.

Evacuations have been lifted for the Golden Bear Estates Area and for residents on County Road 87. Additionally, all areas north of Highway 128, such as Canyon Creek Resort and Positas Road, will no longer be evacuated, fire officials said.

Evacuations, however, remain in place for the Quail Ridge Community and all residents on the west side of Pleasant Valley Road from Highway 128 to Mix Canyon Road, fire officials said.

Red Cross officials have closed an evacuation center that was located at the Winters Community Center. However, a large animal evacuation center remains open at 29775 County Road 31 in Winters, fire officials said.

Firefighters are having trouble accessing some areas where the fire is burning, as the terrain is brush-covered, rugged and steep, according to fire officials.

Firefighters are reinforcing and building a containment line around the southwest side of the fire, fire officials said.

As of Friday afternoon, 1,506 fire personnel, 157 fire engines, 52 fire crews, 13 helicopters, 35 bulldozers, and 15 water tenders have been dispatched to the fire, according to Cal Fire officials.

The fire has destroyed one outbuilding and a tent trailer, fire officials said.

No injuries have been reported since the fire began.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation, fire officials said.
