Wounded Fremont Police Officer Released From Hospital
FREMONT (CBS SF) -- One of two Fremont police officers shot during a traffic stop earlier this month has been released from the hospital.
The officer -- an unnamed detective with 10 years of experience -- had been in stable condition after the shooting that started with a traffic stop at 1:33 p.m. June 1 on Fremont Boulevard at Washington Boulevard.
The other officer suffered more serious wounds, but although he remains hospitalized his condition been improving at a local hospital.

A 44-year-old San Jose man, Gerald Villabrille Jr., was driving a stolen truck when police pulled him over on a Fremont street. Villabrille suddenly backed into the pursuing patrol car and opened fire on the officer, critically wounding him.
During the ensuing pursuit Villabrille shot the detective and then fled into a neighborhood.
Following an intense manhunt, Villabrille was cornered inside a home and as tense SWAT standoff took place. The standoff ended when a blze was ignited inside the home by tear-gas canisters.
After the home burned, Villabrille was discovered dead inside a charred closet with a self-inflicted gunshot.
