Woman Accused Of Leaving Kids In Car While She Gambled In Livermore Casino

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) -- An Oakland woman has been arrested for suspicion of child endangerment for allegedly leaving her two young children in her locked car on Sunday while she was gambling inside a casino in Livermore, police said.

Livermore officers responded to a call that two small children had been left unattended in a locked vehicle in the 900 block of North Canyons Parkway in Livermore at about 6:10 p.m. on Sunday.

They found two children, ages 2 and 3, who were strapped into their car seats and unattended, Livermore police said.

The childrens' mother, Phaley Nget, 37, was gambling inside Casino 580, according to police.

The children weren't injured, but Nget was arrested and the children were taken into protective custody, police said.

Livermore police said they want to remind the public that leaving children unattended in a vehicle even for a minute is not safe.

Janette Fennell, president and founder of KidsAndCars.org, told KCBS that many people do not understand how quickly the temperature in the vehicle rises.

"Also the fact that children—their body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's," she said.

In the last 20 years more than 670 children have died in hot cars and Fennell said her organization is petitioning the White House and the Department of Transportation to do more to prevent children from dying in hot vehicles
