Winter Solstice On Sunday, Bay Area Events To Mark Shortest Day Of The Year

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The northern hemisphere will experience its shortest day and longest night of the year as the Winter Solstice will take place on Sunday. In the Bay Area, there are events to mark the occasion and welcome winter.

The solstice will take place at 3:03 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on Sunday, December 21st. At that point, the sun will be at its farthest southward point.
In the southern hemisphere, Sunday's solstice marks the longest day and shortest night of the year.

Chabot Space and Science Center will mark the Winter Solstice with a celebration Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m. Visitors can listen to live music, enjoy holiday treats and look through the center's telescopes. Admission is $15.

At Muir Woods National Monument, there will be a family event from Noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Visitors can weave a Solstice crown, seasonal songs will be performed and ceremonial lanterns will be lit ahead of the longest night of the year.
