Large Brush Fire Contained Near Homes Along Highway 101 In San Rafael

SAN RAFAEL (CBS SF) -- More than 100 firefighters responded to a 16.5-acre grass and oak woodlands hillside blaze that threatened hillside homes and a mobile home park east of U.S. Highway 101 in San Rafael Friday afternoon.

The fire that was reported around 12:15 p.m. damaged an exterior wall of one mobile home in the Contempo Marin Mobile Home Park on Yosemite Road and damaged a fence and deck of two other mobile homes, San Rafael Fire Chief Chris Gray said. A female resident received a minor injury, Gray said.

There was a partial evacuation of about 50 mobile homes. None of the residents were displaced, Gray said.

The 5-acre blaze grew to 16 acres as winds pushed the flames around. Some of the 125 firefighters who responded were stationed near homes on top of the hill and others attacked the fire at the mobile home park below, Gray said.

"The crews did a remarkable job. They saved hundreds of structures today," Gray said.

The perimeter of the fire was Yosemite Road on the east, McInnis Parkway on the south, Professional Center Parkway on the north and the Redwood Highway frontage road on the west, Gray said.

"Firefighters are in six different places at once," he said during the blaze burning north of the Marin County Civic Center near the Embassy Suites Hotel at 101 McInnis Parkway.

Firefighters from Marinwood, Larkspur, Mill Valley, Novato, Marin County Fire and Cal Fire also responded to the fire. San Rafael police, the Marin County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol also were on hand, Gray said.

Crews were mopping up late Friday afternoon and will be there into the evening, Gray said.
