Formerly Obese Still Plagued By Loose Skin As Insurers Look Away

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) -- She exercised and dieted and lost 150 pounds. Now Briane Barsi is fighting to get rid of something else -- the folds of loose skin that hang from her body.

Barsi says that unless she take two showers a day, puts on plenty of powder and stays wrapped in spandex, that loose skin chafes and burns and can even develop painful sores.

Barsi's doctor says she needs skin removal surgery but she can't afford the cost, which runs between $17,000 to $30,000.

When Barsi was still obese, her insurer would likely have paid for a gastric bypass but she says that getting them to cover the skin removal surgery after losing weight the old-fashion way has been an exercise in frustration.
