Wild East Bay police chase on Highway 24 ends with three suspects in custody

OAKLAND -- A high-speed chase that began in Oakland Wednesday traveled east through the Lamorinda area before ending on Highway 24 back in Oakland when the suspect vehicle lost control. Police arrested three suspects, including two who fled from the vehicle on foot.

Oakland Police said officers were on the 7200 block of Fresno Street in the city's Havenscourt neighborhood at around 12:15 Wednesday when they spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a recent shooting. Officers tried to pull over the vehicle, a gray, newer-model Dodge Charger, but the car took off at a high rate of speed.

The chase wound through Oakland streets before traversing Redwood Regional Park and heading over the Oakland hills on Canyon Road, with the pursuit continuing off the highway through the communities of Canyon, Moraga and Lafayette. The Charger was seen speeding along Moraga Road and passing other vehicles as it swerved through the Campolindo area and into Lafayette.

At one point, the Charger slowed down and stopped at Moraga Road and Brook Street in Lafayette as a woman pushed a stroller through the intersection.

Shortly after, the vehicle got back onto Highway 24 and sped westbound back through the Caldecott Tunnel toward Oakland. Just past the Telegraph Ave. exit just after 1 p.m., the driver lost control and hit the center median, coming to a stop on the freeway as officers surrounded it with guns drawn.

CHP officers, Contra Costa County Sheriff's units and police from Orinda were also involved in the pursuit.

Police said three suspects -- all of whom appeared to be male -- exited the vehicle. Two of them jumped over the guard rail and wall at the edge of the freeway and fled on foot, while one was taken into custody next to the vehicle. Within minutes, officers caught up to the second suspect after he ran through a residential neighborhood in the area of Telegraph and 57th Street.

Officers searched the neighborhood for the third suspect, going door-to-door and deploying K-9 units to search between homes and backyards. The suspect was found hiding between two homes at around 2:30 p.m.

As of 3 p.m., there was still a crime scene with the suspect vehicle blocking lanes of westbound Highway 24, though cars appeared to be moving past in the far left lanes of the freeway. The incident was creating a large traffic jam for drivers heading west on the freeway, with the backup stretching to the Caldecott Tunnel.
