Warning Signs Posted After Fissure Opens Up Along Popular Marin County Trail

POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE (CBS SF) -- Warning signs are posted along a popular trail in the Point Reyes National Seashore due to a fissure that has opened up along a crumbling cliff.

The National Park Service says the fissure has developed along the Chimney Rock Trail, a popular spot for photographs.

"We are visiting California for the holidays and we figured we should come out here and have fun," tourist Tanya Zivkovic said.

But, a fun day outdoors can become deadly if a cliff faces collapses.

In late March, a Bay Area teacher died when a portion of Arch Rock collapsed days after the parks service warned hikers about unstable cliffs.

Those same signs are now posted along the Chimney Rock Trail.

Wet weather is partially to blame.

Park rangers are asking hikers to follow the signage and stay safe on the trails.
