'Vampire Diaries' Star Jokes About Casting World Cup Biter Luis Suarez On Show

(CBS SF) -- Actor Ian Somerhalder is a champion of public interest topics ranging from environmental issues and now the world of sport. If you don't follow soccer, this is a bit confusing. Don't worry, we'll explain.

When an injustice gets the world in a tizzy like a controversial soccer player biting an opponent, Somerhalder adds his support. Uruguayan World Cup soccer player Luis Suarez appears to have bitten Girogio Chiellini during a match. Adding insult to injury, Italy eventually lost the game and exited the tournament.

After the incident, fans took to the Internet to Photoshop Suarez into parodies including "Jaws" and "The Walking Dead".

In the lampooned promo image for "The Vampire Diaries" Suarez is poised to sink his fangs into Damon Salvatore holding an apple made to resemble a soccer ball soaked in blood. Presumably, the fan art was noticed by the Somerhalder camp who Instagrammed it.

The image was captioned, "Umm.. Apparently there's a new cast member joining @vampirediaries … @luis16suarez!! #WorldCup2014 #LuisSuarez #IanSomerhalder".

Suarez has been called one of the most hated players in soccer and he may get more serious charges including assault and a long suspension from the game. Here are a few reasons beyond the obvious to not bite in soccer.

Somerhalder was recently in Washington D.C. speaking on behalf of protection of endangered species.
