Uber Drivers, Users Petition To Allow Driving On Market Street In San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A plan to close part of Market Street to private cars in San Francisco has prompted Uber drivers and passengers to start petition to grant them an exemption.
The plan is called 'Safer Market Street.' It bans cars from turning onto Market Street between 3rd and 8th Streets. Officials say it will cut traffic in half and make the street safer for pedestrians and bikers.
SFMTA vehicles, taxis, commercial vehicles and cyclists are exempt, and Uber drivers want the same exemption.
They have started an online petition to allow Uber and other "transportation network companies" to service Market Street.
Organizers set a goal of 15,000 signatures. As of Thursday night there were over 13,000.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors voted to approve the plan Tuesday. It takes effect in August.
