Suspect Arrested In San Leandro Police Officers Hit-And-Run

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- An Oakland man has been arrested for suspicion of attempted murder and evading police for allegedly striking two San Leandro police officers with his car in front of a grocery store on Sunday night, police said.

Terry Gordon, 57, was arrested in Oakland shortly after 9 a.m.  today after officers spotted his black 1998 Lexus ES 300 sedan, according to police.

Officers tried to stop Gordon but he disobeyed their command to stop and led officers on a short pursuit before crashing into a parked vehicle, at which point he was then taken into custody without incident, police said.

Gordon's Lexus had damage consistent with Sunday night's incident, which occurred at about 8:30 p.m. In that incident, Gordon allegedly struck the two officers in front of a Safeway store, located at 699 Lewelling Blvd., according to police.

The officers were trying to detain Gordon because store employees alleged that he had just shoplifted items from the store, police said.

The officers tried to stop Gordon but he ran to his car and struck the officers as he was driving away, according to police.

The officers were transported to a hospital for treatment. One officer is still in the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, while the other was released some hours after being hit, police said.

The officers identified Gordon as the suspect who struck them and his car has also been identified as the vehicle that was used in the alleged assault, according to police.

"We are grateful that this subject has been located and arrested," San Leandro police spokesman Lt. Isaac Benabou said in a statement.

Benabou said, "We are also very thankful that both officers are doing well and we expect a full recovery. Thank you to everyone who extended their thoughts and prayers for our officers."

Detectives will present the case to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office on Wednesday for charging, Benabou said.
