Two-Alarm Fire Displaces 17 People From Apartment Building
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at an apartment building that displaced 17 people in Oakland this morning, a fire battalion chief said.
A report of a structure fire in the 1400 block of 39th Avenue was reported around 2:40 a.m., a fire dispatcher said.
The blaze started in an apartment unit on the ground floor and spread to the second floor, Battalion Chief Coy Justice said.
The fire was under control shortly after 3 a.m., the dispatcher said.
The American Red Cross was called to assist 17 people, five of them children, displaced by fire, Justice said. Justice said it was "fortunate that no one got hurt" given how fast the fire spread.
The four apartment units in the two-story building are considered uninhabitable, according to Justice.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
