Twitter Reportedly Dropping Photos, Links From 140 Character Limit
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Twitter is reportedly removing links and photos from the 140 character limit, giving its users additional space in composing tweets.
According to Bloomberg, a person familiar with the matter said Twitter will make the change in the next several weeks.
Currently, a link takes up 23 characters, while a photo takes up 24 characters, leaving a user only 93 characters for text if both are added. Users try to get around the limit by either splitting long statements into multiple tweets or by tweeting screenshots of text.
Earlier this year, the company was rumored to allow users to post tweets up to 10,000 characters long, but the idea was panned by the site's loyal users.
The social network has struggled to add additional users, particularly compared to Facebook. As of March 31st, Twitter had 310 million monthly active users, while Facebook has 1.65 billion active monthly users.
