'Trophy Trips' Take Over Vacation Market With Brag-Worthy Adventures

(CBS SF) -- Forget the beach. Adventure travel is a booming business with more people choosing to go on "trophy trips" rather than just hanging out at the beach.

One company, Backroads, takes nearly 30,000 vacationers a year on once-in-a-lifetime trips in exotic locations around the world.

Backroads founder Tom Hall said he woke up in the middle of the night and decided to lead people on bike trips. That idea has grown into a huge company that leads people on over 100 different types of adventure vacations.

They take people on bike trips, hiking, rafting and organize logistics for just about any kind of activity in some of the remotest parts of the world.

It's largely fueled by baby boomers who feel like they can't get away with doing nothing anymore. Instead, the pressure is to come back to school or work with a photo to talk (ahem, brag) about a truly adventurous getaway.
