Tree Topples Onto Pickup Truck In Santa Cruz County, Killing Driver

FELTON, Santa Cruz County (CBS SF) -- The driver of a pickup truck was killed in Santa Cruz County Friday when a large tree fell onto the vehicle.

The California Highway Patrol said the incident happened at about 1:21 p.m. in Felton along E. Zayante Road south of Highland Ave. Officers arrived to find a 2018 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck down an embankment with a tree with the roots completely exposed on top of it.

The driver was declared dead at the scene by firefighters; he was not identified. The cause of the collision was still under investigation. Alcohol and/or drugs did not appear to be a factor in this crash, the CHP said.

Following the crash, the CHP said E. Zayante Road would be closed for 8-10 hours between Graham Hill Road and Highland Ave. while the scene was processed.
