Bird Strike Kills Power to Thousands in Petaluma

PETALUMA (CBS SF) -- All but 1,570 electric customers have power again following an outage Sunday morning in Petaluma that occurred when a bird contacted PG&E equipment, a company spokeswoman said.

Spokeswoman Karly Hernandez said crews expect to have the rest of the customers restored by about 2:30 p.m.

PG&E uses flight diverters to reduce the chance of bird collisions.

At one point, 17,670 customers were without power, Hernandez said.

Customers first lost power at 10:53 a.m., spokeswoman Karly Hernandez said.

The water department in Petaluma asked residents to limit or stop using water, if possible, until power was restored.

Police reminded drivers that intersections with traffic lights that are not working should be treated as if they are four-way stops.
