Tesla Reports Over 50,000 Electric Vehicle Deliveries In 2015

FREMONT (CBS SF) – Tesla Motors announced that they delivered more than 50,000 vehicles in 2015, capping a busy year for the Bay Area-based electric car maker.

According to a statement released Sunday, Tesla announced 50,580 electric vehicles were delivered to owners over the past year.

Many of those deliveries took place in the fourth quarter of 2015. Tesla announced 17,192 Model S sedans were delivered in the last three months of the year, up 75 percent over the fourth quarter of 2014.

The automaker also announced their first delivery figures of the Model X SUV, which was officially unveiled in late September. In the fourth quarter, 208 Model X SUVs were delivered.

Things are expected to remain busy at Tesla in 2016, as the automaker approaches completion of a battery factory near Reno, Nevada called the "Gigafactory." Tesla is also in the midst of a hiring spree, with more than 1,600 job openings in the U.S. and worldwide.
