Tesla 'Powerwall' Battery Technology Unveiled, Set To Cost Around $3K

FOSTER CITY (CBS/AP) -- Electric car maker Tesla Motors wants to park its battery technology in homes and businesses across the U.S.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk late Thursday unveiled a plan for the company's batteries to store solar electricity and reshape the way the power grid works while reducing pollution.

The battery, called "Powerwall," may have limited appeal initially because they will be sold at a suggested price of $3,000 to cost $3,500 apiece, depending on the capacity. A variety of installers will carry the product.

The Powerwall will still be far less than the $18,300 sticker price for a larger version of a Tesla home battery that has already been installed in about 300 California homes as part of a pilot program

Tesla expects U.S. shipments of Powerwall to begin this summer.
