Hiring Spree At Tesla Motors: More Than 1,600 Openings At Carmaker

FREMONT (CBS SF) – Bay Area-based electric car maker Tesla is in the midst of a hiring spree as it expands its model lineup, builds a battery factory and works on self-driving cars.

As of Tuesday morning, the automaker had 1,648 job openings worldwide, with hundreds of jobs available at their factory in Fremont and offices in Palo Alto. Most of the Bay Area job openings appear to be for engineers and technicians, with nearly all of them full-time positions.

The automaker is also looking for service technicians and product specialists at their showrooms in the Bay Area and across the country.

Internationally, Tesla is looking for employees to expand in several cities, including Amsterdam, Beijing, London and Sydney.

According to Bloomberg News, Tesla's headcount grew 15-fold to more than 14,000 employees since the company's IPO in 2010, still small compared to giant automakers such as General Motors. At the end of 2014, GM reportedly had 216,000 employees.

The maker of the Model S sedan had a busy 2015 as it began selling the long-awaited Model X electric SUV and launched an autopilot feature in its vehicles.

Tesla is expected to open a $5 billion lithium battery plant near Reno sometime in 2016.
