Tesla Expanding Operations With Over 1 Million Square Feet Of Space In Livermore

LIVERMORE (KCBS) -- Tesla Motors is expanding into Livermore as the electric car maker ramps up production on two new models.

The company has leased two buildings, totaling more than a million square feet of space in the Oaks Logistics Center near the Livermore Airport.

The buildings are part of a 72-acre industrial complex that is slated for completion this year.

Livermore Mayor Stewart Gary told KPIX 5 he is "thrilled" to have Tesla in town.

The lease comes at a time when Tesla is ramping up production of its less expensive Model 3 sedan and the new Model X crossover.

More than 325,000 orders were placed for the Model 3 sedan when the company began taking pre-orders earlier this year.  The sedan will sell for an average of $42,000.
